advise needed on selection of steel for short sword

Cliff,
The folks that I know who practice with this style of knife for a weapon only have presentaion grade knives that they honor simular to the system that the Japanese do there swords. I have read there paper work and have made a few for folks training under a master. There biggest requirements were the balance, weight and handle configuration. I was surprised with the balance on a knife this large.
As Jim said in his post . The farmers ect use them as tools and a weapon also.

Forgot to mention, for those interested in Bando, the khukuri based martial art, Bill Martino can put you in touch with a number of well experienced guys. They used to be very active on his forum until a policy decision was made by the higher up guys.

It was very interesting to discuss blades with those guys, as they do a significant amount of heavy wood chopping as part of their training which is something I do a lot of, for different reasons. I gained a lot of direct practical information from the exchange since we were using the same blades on the same tasks.

The folks I know have several blades.
One fellow has 26. Many different lenghts and styles also. They use the style that Jim speaks of (simular)for training. Yes they cut wood and other materials like stuffed cloth bags to simulate people and other purposes. With there presentaion knives they do not. There master does not cut (other than intened purpose)with the presentation knife either. They do have some of the highest end knives that I have seen it this style made simular to the ones Jim speaks of. Some are engraved with brass inlays ect. They seem to have the higher end type in that style for training.
There practices may vary from one group to another as other MA groups do from one to the next generally.
Their trainer (master ect) is a vet from ww2.
