Nice! Thanks for sharing. Nice little family you have there. Don't you love the wood tinder he packs with? I have all of mine packaged into small Ziploc bags. I probably have more than I will use in a lifetime. It would have been cheaper to source this directly and purchase it, even if I had to purchase in bulk. But it would not have been nearly as much fun. If I ever run out, I guess I'll have to buy another GSO.

Well, I emailed Survive and had a nice oconversation with a member. Since they do not have what I ordered and don't know when it's coming in, they are changing my order to what they have on hand. Just got a shipping notice, I'm excited to see what's coming in the mail!

Can you share some details about what you have coming?

Within minutes of it opening up, I ordered a 20cv 4.1 on Dec 24. I've already been down the nightmare of a preorder, and I'll never do it again. That's why I waited for a model that was NOT a preorder and was supposed to be in stock.

I picked what I thought was a generic combo, green canvas handles, black sheath. They were ALL supposed to be in the mail before Jan 11, according to the newsletter and Facebook. Well, a month went by and I heard nothing.

Fast forward to this week, I asked for a return in Monday. The offered a change from the canvas micarta, which was out of stock and they do not know when they are getting more, to the linen micarta, which was on hand.

I do have to admit that I appreciate their efforts to make it right somehow.

Hmmmm....does not appear that they are sending them out on a "first-come-first-serve" basis: I placed my GSO-10 pre-order purchase on April 23, 2013. Oh well, I believe it is worth the wait.

YESSSS!! Got an email notification from Survive! that my GSO-10 is shipping today. As stated by others, mailings are moving along.

Regards,

Congratulations to everyone who's received their knives....always feels great when I find a package on my porch or hear that doorbell ring. :D

Here we go:

I'll try to get some family portraits done soon with a real camera and post soon. I might even invite some of the Sykco neighbor boys over and those Bark River neighbors to say hello and to meet grand pop.

Anybody with a micrometer-pincher able to give the edge-bevel width and thickness? Also, spine-shot or thickness of the swell in the handle slabs? I'd like to compare those measurements to my Gen.1 GSO-10.

Congratulations on the new acquisitions!

No micrometer, but I have decent enough calipers that I use for reloading. I'll try to take some measurements and get back with you.

Bevel width is approximately 0.053", thickness behind bevel is approx. 0.36", Handel at widest swell approx. 0.990".

Bevel thickness is the measurement I have the least confidence in as I did not have it in a vice. I could not see both sides of the blade without moving the calipers. I will see if I can repeat in a vice over the weekend.

The bevel was even on both sides. I measured approximately mid blade length.

WOW, I assume that thickness measurement was 0.036". If that's accurate, the new edge-geometry is thinner by ~1/3, the edge angle ~20% more acute (down to 20-dps from previous 25), which will result in a substantial jump in penetration and slicing performance! The knife is now truly a short/heavy machete

EDIT TO ADD: I just measured my handle thickness at ~0.8" in the swell, slightly thinner than the new model, does that seem accurate? I'd like to see (if it isn't too much trouble for someone) a spine or belly shot of the handle that's comparable to one from my review, e.g.:

Yes, my bad. 0.036"

Snipped for brevity...Hopefully he will be able to keep enough capital from orders up til now to just put together a bunch of his 2 or 3 most popular models and sell them outright, without having to take deposits/pre-orders/upfront payments before anything is built.

I agree with this. His name is out there and his designs and materials are good. He should transition to direct sales of finished knives or sales through vendors. I ordered my 4.1 and got it 3 days later through a vendor for the same price as buying direct. I'm as happy as can be with the purchase. There's another maker on this forum that has the same issue but is still very popular so I don't think Guy's business is going to tank outright. Then again, I purposefully avoid that maker now on the forum because I don't want "2 weeks" to be 9 months. So I know where you guys are coming from.

How do you like the 4.1? What steel?

The linen scales are of course smoother, due to the material being smaller compared to the canvas micarta. But it is still slightly grippy which I love. I am not a fan of polished micarta and almost immediately sand it rougher.

Several things strike me as different:

1- the scales seem a bit thinner but it could be my imagination.

2- This one, appears to be noticeably lighter than my other 4.1. Now I wish I would have weighed the other one before I sold it. But it could just be the differences in steel and micarta so it's probably not fair to compare them in weight.

3- Guy said the edges are ground a little thinner now when compare to the same knife I bought in the 2012 preorder. I don't know how much of a difference it is, but this one is noticeably sharper than the 3v I had previously.

This happens to be the only stainless fixed blade I have. I hope we will have some good times together. :)

And news of the move to Idaho.

And news of the GSO-3.5:
Just a quick update on the GSO-3.5 progress. The blades have all been double disc surface ground and are up on the Berger bevel grinder now. The blade grinding should be finished up by some time next week. After that we just need to get the handles and sheaths squared away and these will begin shipping out.

Very nice! I EDC my M390 4.1 every weekend (purchased April of 2012). I just got the jimpless version this month. Both are canvas micarta. I should get the calipers out and take some measurements to see if there are differences, but I have re-profiled my M390 edge, so I am not sure what that might tell me. The scales, on the other hand, might be informative.

And news of the GSO-3.5:

Thanks for sharing chiral.grolim. I, as a native Pennsylvanian, am saddened by the news of the impending move of this company to Idaho. On the other hand, Idaho was on the short list of places that I wanted to move to one time in my career when I could make a choice about living wherever I wanted to. It is certainly a beautiful state, and I wish him luck. Likely taxation might be part of this decision, but that is probably considered politics, hence forbidden.
