Here is a update from Guy on the GSO 3.5s

The GSO-3.5 progress. The blades have all been double disc surface ground and are up on the Berger bevel grinder now. The blade grinding should be finished up by some time next week. After that we just need to get the handles and sheaths squared away and these will begin shipping out.

A question for anyone that's received their GSO10. Have you noticed any scratches on the blade? Both of my GSo10shave a few scratches that are nearly horizontal to the blade edge. The starches on one of them are deep enough to catch my fingernail on. Would the most source of these be dirt particles in the sheath? I don't really mind one of the knives having scratches as it's going to be a user but I was hoping to keep one of them as a safe queen for now and maybe sell or trade it in the future.

Does anyone know of any way to buff these out and not ruin the finish?

Thanks,

Caba

Are the 3.5s hollow ground or are my eyes picking something up in this pic that isn't there? Was under the impression these would be sabre ground as I understood the term...or a high flat ground rather than full. Either way, what grind are these? :) Thanks! Am eagerly awaiting mine regardless.

Hello, Caba:

I received my GSO-10 on yesterday, 1/31/2013. My inspection detected no scratches. Actually, I was surprised that it was so scratch free along the spine. The spine is where most people had complaints regarding the "machining marks". For me, it is a tool and upon use this baby will not look so pristine...and I am very happy about that. My humble suggestion to you is that you contact Survive! with your concerns. I do believe that they will be extremely helpful in resolving your issues. Let us on the forum know how it turns out for you.

Best regards,

I did not notice any scratches on my 10, but I have not spent a lot of time with it. I will take a close look today, but my cursery inspection revealed nothing obvious.

AFAIK they are flat-saber not hollow-saber. "Saber"-grind, btw, can be either flat or hollow or convex, it simply entails an unbevelled section left near the spine, be it thin (high saber) or thick (low saber).

I received my 20CV version yesterday. Here are the thickness measurements at the shoulder.

At the plunge = 0.027
At the tip = 0.041

To the best of my knowledge, the reason the geometry changes towards the tip is to make that area of the blade tougher. I can see the width of the bevel change around 1" from the tip.

This wall case was made for my 13 year old son and a few of his knives but look what else fits.
The maker uses old pallets and other scrap wood. Magnets help hold the blades in place.

After reading all the posts here, I have to wonder what people expect. If the knives were crap, no one would order them and you wouldn't have to wait.

When I ordered my GSO 3.5 I also read what was on the site.

"We do the best we can but sometimes production delays happen, so we would advise you not to place a preorder if you absolutely need it for an upcoming birthday, holiday or trip."

I see an "estimated" of Feb. 21st. I wouldn't hold my breath. I don't know how many 3.5s were ordered, but mine is in the 8800* range. That's a lot of knives for a small company.

It's true that Survive knifes are not custom knives. IMHO, they are better than a lot of so-called custom knives that I have seen and owned over the last 50 years. All I can say is
be patient and quityerbitchin.

*I am assuming that means at least 8800 were ordered.

+1

If I revealed how long I waited for my S4 survival knife made by Rob Bayley (Bayleyknife), several people would probably soil their diapers.
When some of us have lived more then a half century... some of us know that "Patience is a virtue".

As mentioned previously in this thread, I received mine last July within 7 days of purchase.... if I had to wait a year.. no problem as I trust the maker and did not have ants in the pants.

I don't think these are tooling marks. I don't have any problems with them I actually prefer that my knife isn't too pretty. I'll try and post a pic to give a better idea of what I'm talking about. I know I can always get in touch with Guy and send the knife back. Given that I'm from outside the US it's a bit of a hassle. Also, I don't think this is a huge deal it's mostly a cosmetic issue and I was hoping to fix it myself. I kind of feel overbearing for sending a knife back over a few scratches.

As an aside, so far Guy's customer service has been great in my experience. I had issue with some rolling/chipping of the blade edge on my GSO5. I emailed Guy on Dec 26th with the expectation it would take a few days to receive a reply because of the holidays. He got back to me within an hour and told me to send him the knife for testing and resharpening. The turnaround was fairly quick (a week and a half with shipping I think) and my knife came back resharpened looking brand spanking new (along with a free patch). When I sent an email to guy thanking him, he actually sent me a few pictures of him using the knife to chop and a pry a piece of wood.

Inspected closer my 10, and no scratches. This and my recent jimpless 4.1 had few if any machine/laser marks on the spine, compared to my previous knives received this year.

There you have it: great knives with great customer service!
Thanks for sharing your customer service experience and enjoy your knives.

Great looking collection! What is the handle like on the Bravo III? I have one on the way and I'm a bit worried it might be a bit small for such a heavy knife.

Very, very nice Roman. I cannot wait for you to provide some objective thoughts between the GSO 10 and Bravo III in use, once you have had some time with it.

Ridnovir:

Thanks for the photos.

Thanks guys.

I cannot wait to get some outdoor time with GSO 10 and Bravo 3. First impression: Bravo 3 is massive thick and heavy (should chop like a beast). GSO 10 fills nimble and fast I was a bit worried about finger grooves but they fit well and provide excellent grip. The scales on the Bravo 3 could be a bit longer (both Golok and GSO 10 have longer scales) definitely feel different then more flatter and wider GSO 10 but they fill the hand nicely and lock the grip. I have S size hands so the length is fine with me but folks with meatier hands will wish for longer scales.

Has anyone else seen the new Survive Knives youtube video on 3v and rusting? I have to admit I did have some concerns about 3v until I saw the video.

Here is the embed of Guy's new video and also one I put out almost 7 months ago. Note that Guy's test GSO-10 was rough-finished, the bevel left with a very coarse grind that encourages condensation and corrosion nucleation. He cleaned it up with coarse steel wool. Mine is 1st production GSO-10 with smooth stonewashed finish, left overnight in a damp environment, but I cleaned it up with #0000 (super-fine) steel wool. In both cases, the rust left behind dark spots of patina where it nucleated - minute pits that are just a little deeper than the steel-wool can reach, nothing to compromise the steel, but if you want a pristine look left to the blade but don't care well enough for it to prevent this sort of thing happening, you might prefer a coated finish. *shrug* I'll attach the pics of mine again as well:
