Sounds like a plan. Kathy and I were gonna go for another bike ride yesterday, but it was too damn windy. We're gonna sit around a fire tonight though. 40° around a fire sounds good to me. Hot dogs, and a pipe/cigar sounds like a good plan.

Did that last night, sans tobacco. Perfect temp for fire, cold enough to need heat but not so cold as to freeze non fire-facing body parts.

Anybody playing COD ghost? Check out the multiplayer mode knife, is that a busse or a smaller version of Todd's M-18?

It's the simple things. :D

It most definitely is!

Fixed it for ya. Spell ninja can't help it...

Gud thang yous wur thayer to katch it, im not shure how we woold live with spellin arrers

I've been thinking about one, but I have so many choppers it's ridiculous.

I wish Ka-Bar would make a Becker that was similar to the SP8. 9-10" long, chisel tip but with a symmetrical grind (I loathe chisel grinds), forget the saw. Not sure if I'd want 3/16ths or 1/4".

The SP8 would have been even better without the saw!!

okay then, that's a good base for a fire :) just need more kindling...

Ill get right on that!!

scythe handles can easily be purchased from a few sources, even amazon, though if you blade is not euro standard, you might find that making one is easier - there's a straight style with offset handles that is popular, and relatively easy.

there's also a pretty good book, if you're into that kinda thing

remember the old USSR logo? hammer and sickle. probably 99% of people don't have a clue what the hammer is for :D

typically, you'd sharpen a scythe with a peening hammer, and a cute little anvil hammered into a stump. oft times, there's be a peener servicing blades in the field when they were so dull (thick) that the wetstone scythe users would carry to touch up didn't hack it anymore.

peening works a treat on many things like that

I got mine from an old man that lived across the street from me about 27 years ago. It was already old then. I think I gave him $2 for it. Could probably fetch $80-$100 for it now.

well, around here they are not that rare. see them all the time on craigs for $15. got two for $40 that were outstanding

can buy brand new ones, modern austrian blade, american style handle in metal or wood for < $100.

guy up in maine (too far to drive really), was selling nice blades for $10-15 each, no handles, but that's easily remedied.

the plan is to steel brush the blades some, nock off any loose rust, clean up the edges, then "paint" them with RustOleum Rust Reformer, get a nice black hard finish, then paint them something purty, and put an edge for sure on them. maybe. the wood will need some tung or linseed oil. the nibs will need some adjusting (imagine, finding a whole PDF on how to fix nibs). should be nice for Spring/Summer.

then i'll probably be on a quest to buy a couple more for lols.

Yeah... they definitely work, but honestly I prefer my WeedEater. :D

they have contests all the time, scythe usually wins :D

quiet. beautfil sound.

plus, the scythe automatically winrows your cuttings for tidy harvesting

That woman is great with that scythe.

What do they normally make them out of? It seems she has to sharpen it frequently. Not that it even slows her down much but maybe a more wear resistant steel would last longer between sharpening?

apparently at the time of the video, 14 year old woman :D kicks ass.

they're made of steel. softer temper than you'd think, so they bend, don't break or chip out. hence the hammer thing to fix them.

even with all the touchups, a blade can last ... a really long time. peening MOVES more metal to the edge, so you don't lose so much when touching up.

The Machax I won in the chopping contest at BeckerWest. Thanks to Ethan and Ka-bar!
It fits perfectly in my Kelley Customs BK9 dangler. Bonus!!
I love the Machax. It's just cool.
I've been without one for the last 6 months.
All is right in the world once again!

I was looking thru the March 2013 issue of blade magazine and came across a 710 sheath, and his contact info in there.

Very cool!

Page 76, bottom right, for anyone else that may have the issue.

I don't believe that for a single minute (the logo, not the sharpening); I'll stick with the urban legend that it represents both industrial and agricultural workers.
apparently it's a matter of technique - i'm still learning, but if you are working "that hard", you're doing it wrong.

it's a dance, not a marathon :D

Cool!

She appears to be using no arm strength at all and just letting her arms go side to side, they would hit her own body if it weren't for holding onto that scythe

believe it

she's barefoot too

also it's a straight snath, note the handles

This shows the peening and sharpening, and explains it a little better for people like me who never used a scythe or peened anything :D

Just got back in from a fine evening with family by the fire. Smoke went straight up all evening. Perfect night for a fire.
