Will do :)

I like old tools. I have a scythe I rescued from my FIL's cellar. The blade is solid and well worth saving but the handle is FUBAR. Sadly I don't know where to get a new one and I'm not set up to make one myself... I presume they're steamed and bent or something like that?

Maybe I will just knock the worst rust off, clear-coat it and hang it up somewhere as a decorative piece... can't quite bring myself to just throw it away.

Contact 42Blades on this forum James, he can tell you where to get a new handle.

Yep. He sells old scythes on his site, but not handles. He does sell nibs and snath bolts though. I'm sure he would have an answer for a handle. http://www.baryonyxknife.com/scac.html

I just remembered that a broken one came with the house (when we bought it in 2003!) that I never threw away - thanks to the randomness that is snark, I'll prolly have another project I can mix into the blender of creation this winter....

I love it when you guys come up with the solutions to problems I haven't yet created, but will, because...there's already a solution! It's like reverse imagineering.
Thank you both, and Bladite, too.

Cool!... honestly I'll likely never get around to truly refurbishing mine... not like I don't already have enough projects on the honey-do list ;) But it would look cool hanging in the shop or over the garage door. I kinda keep my eye out for old rusty tubs or wheel-barrows that could be cleared, lined and used for a planter, too... I'm a real Martha Stewart that way :D Cut-off whiskey barrels make great planters too, but most people want way too much money for 'em.

Last weekend we were out for a drive in the country with Angie's folks and saw a farmhouse with a little pot still in their front yard. Angie just looked at me and "NO." :p

You are the master of POD - Photo On Deck. How you always seem to have a relevant pic in your arsenal of digital artillery, ready to lob into the pages of snark at a moment's notice, I'll never know. Still impressive, tho.

He does sell nibs and snath bolts though.

Seriously? What on earth is a "snath bolt"? And what does an ink pen have to do with scythes? I think you are making this terminology up.

Not sure if ya'll know this, but Amtrak is f(...)g awesome! St. Louis to Chicago in 4 hours. I know, I know, Chicago... Ewwwww, however for work it's awesome.

Ironically, 42Blades was talking about his on the ESEE forum. Told him I had one, and he wanted to see photos. SO, I already had them on Photobucket.

The snath is the handle. The snath bolt helps hold the blade on to the snath. Nibs are the handles, although this doesn't show that:

EDIT: This one does:

^ See. This is what I mean. You even have POD's to explain your other POD's. I try that, and I'm lost surfing the interwebz for a half hour. If I remember to come back, I've missed it by like 3 pages...

I have bookmarks on my toolbar. (mozilla) Makes it easy to get to my favs, like Google, and Photobucket. Click both open, find what I want on Google Image, save the photo, go to the Photobucket tab, upload, paste the code here. Sometimes takes less than a minute.

Good to know you're not superdigitallyhuman. I'll have to give that a try, altough I'm trying to get used to using Chrome as it syncs better across my computers, and gets me into flickr. But still, it seems you do have a lot of your own photos on hand for just the right occasion....

I got mine from an old man that lived across the street from me about 27 years ago. It was already old then. I think I gave him $2 for it. Could probably fetch $80-$100 for it now.

Nice one, cf! You're work keeps getting better and better.

Bladite, if I lived about 1200 miles closer, I would offer to help you. I need a few days of good outside labor.

c'mon down - I have plenty of tree/brush to clear off the dam and will feed & beer you. :)

Will do :)

I found a usable handle for $15 at one of the area antique pits -- had another that was only good for wall hanging for less.

There is a farm store near here that still has some scythe handles. They're a little dusty, but there.

On a side note Betty's fried chicken was exceptional today. A pipe and some coffee by the fire pit followed by a nap are my plans. It's the simple things. :D

Sounds like a plan. Kathy and I were gonna go for another bike ride yesterday, but it was too damn windy. We're gonna sit around a fire tonight though. 40° around a fire sounds good to me. Hot dogs, and a pipe/cigar sounds like a good plan.

I've been a hunting fool the last few days since deer season opened up. I shot a good sized doe on Friday and then couldn't find it after nearly 2 hours of my friend and I searching. We found a really good blood trail and were following it when it just disappeared. I've been pretty disappointed that we couldn't find it after seeing how much it was bleeding.

I've been sleeping in shifts in order to work and to be able to hunt, so today I took the morning off and slept in. I'm going to my grandma's 99th bday party in about an hour. She is a great woman and has been through a LOT in her life including having 14 kids. Hopefully we can celebrate 100 next year. Im hoping to sneak out for a few hours after the party to do some more hunting.
