Am I On The Right Track Buying These Expensive Knives

All of them are US made, except for a Böker Tree Brand made in Solingen, Germany, and five which are made in Russia.

Prices are between $500.00 and $1,400. I’m having trouble deciding if I’m on the right track. They all have premium steels, and are made by well respected makers…..but I just don’t know if the quality trumps the outlay.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Look at it this way: down the road from our house, there is a guy that has 7 Ferraris. Knives are much cheaper. Cheaper than a girlfriend, too. Don't ask me how I know.:D

I have some inexpensive Kershaws. Some higher end Benchmades & Emersons. Also got my share of $500-$1500 customs.
Now, I like those low end knives, though they rarely see any pocket time.
The higher end knives I really enjoy carrying and using on a regular basis.
Truth be told though. I truly love my customs. Each one has it's own story of how it was acquired and makes me feel connected to it. For me it is a joy to carry and use them.

That being said.... Those are MY feelings as a collector. Not yours, or anyone else's on the forums. Glean what you can from everyone's advice and anecdotes, then make the decision that works best for you.
There is NO wrong way to collect.
Cheap, expensive, users, safe queens, Long term keepers, quick flip for profits.

Everything we say on the forum may be somewhat helpful in your decision, but truthfully as long as it doesn't put a strain on you financially, whichever path brings you joy, go for it.

Have fun!!

What did you expect ? Buying or not buying a knife is entirely your own personal decision. If you are on the fence nobody can make the decision for you. As you are collecting opinions, I may as well add my two pence : stay on the fence long enough and if the urge goes away, hey ! You were right not to buy. The urge doesn't recede ? Buy it ! Oh, it's no longer available ! Too bad. But don't worry you will fall in knife love again soon enough. Seriously, though, don't buy too many knives at once. Choose one, use it, appreciate it : you will learn what works for you and what does not. I have drawers full of knives that just don't make it in my pocket / on my belt. Objectively, this money could have been more wisely used elsewhere. Yes, another opinion.

Read the post directly above yours. 😉

If you think buying expensive knives will bring a smile to your face……….you’re absolutely right. Carry on
Why have a plethora of budget knives that you’ll never used as opposed to having a moderate supply of really nice knives that will bring a smile to your face and out live you. I guess the old adage “you get what you pay for” in today’s highly technology world doesn’t mean much. ;)

OO should send all his knives to me so I can test them out. Then, after a few years, I can send them back with a full report unless I forgot to send them back.

You could always buy a gas station knife, look at it, use it, and see if it makes you happy.

EDIT: I will say, you done dove into the deep end quite quickly compared to most people.

Ya’ know, when I was on the road as a musician I needed good, roadworthy gear. I depended on it. It was how I made a living and provided for my family. Probably traveled with $20K worth of gear.

When I retired from music I started my own small engine shop servicing riding mowers, zero turn mowers, push mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, pressure washers & pumps, and trash pumps. I will work on old vehicles where no computer is involved….but I’m selective about that. I also do carpentry work and most all of my own electrical work.

I depend on my tools. Everything is either US or German made. When I grab something I don’t have to worry if it’s gonna shit the bed. They just perform. Sure, there are budget tools that’ll do the same thing….but not over the long haul. Those are perfect for the household handyman.

When I started this whole knife thing I had no preconceived notions. I just knew if I was going to buy something I wanted something similar to my tools….something that would hold up over the long haul. I’ve only got a couple that I don’t carry. The others get carried and used.

This forum and its members have been fantastic to me. I’ve learned a lot and I’m thankful for that.

If you are concerned about the money, then try to find second hand ones. Notice that, I did not say used as there are people just buys these for photos and sell them when they get bored of it, or when next shiny thing comes. If you do not want to wait for that, try to get a knife which will hold it's value so you can sell it (if you regret buying) to a similar price you paid for it. These are generally, custom limited quantity knives.

Well, if that ain't country...

So, this is why I don't understand you diving head first into knives over 1000 $... Come on, there are a lot of knives which will serve you a lifetime of work for less than 100 $.

Bottom line. Buy what you need first. Then what you like. My first good knife was a Helle Eggen. Needed a good fixed for the woods. $55.00 at the time. Now are over 100. Most expensive I own around 250. mid tech.

Over a 1k seems a little much. On the other hand I am a archer/bow hunter have some customs form 425. to 850. Don't need any more. About 27 knives. Fixed and folders. I did buy an Exclusive about 6 months ago because I liked it around 200.

Just have a good time.

You should get everyones opinion. Start a thread......"Are expensive knives worth it"........just saying......😆😆😆

All this talk about trains...

Only train I'm on is the one with Ozzy and Randy Rhoades.

Right now I'm searching for a knife with a thin, slicey blade, that is overbuilt, can handle hard use, and stand up to prying. It also must be gentlemanly, fidget friendly, and have super steel. It must have a strong lock as spine whacking is a necessary part of my occupation, as is batoning. If it helps, I like to slice apples on my lunch break.
