Am I the only one who doesn’t like Spyderco

Well, it could be worse, you could have posted this right in the Spyderco forum 😇

My very first Spyderco I bought was a blue Delica straight from the hands of Sal himself when he was a guest speaker at the Ashokan Seminar and it was amazingly sharp!

And also

G2

Don’t have that knife any longer nor this one but I liked them both

To me it’s the asthetics and the grips that have never appealed to me. I really appreciate the consistent sprint runs of new steels, the blade designs just don’t catch my eye. FWIW, I’m not a fan of Benchmade either. I’ve always preferred the looks of MT, CRK, ZTs , Curtiss
I have some older Benchmades (AFCK, Ascent), but have not bought them for a long time. When they had their little 2A issue that sealed the deal for me to avoid them.

I can’t get enough Spyders !
They all are great in use and carry.
I thought they were ugly, but after I bought one I can’t get enough.
2 of their best.

Some ages ago I had a Spyderco, an all-stainless wharncliffe. Thick blade, sharp edges on the thumb hole and spine, cold handle, heavy for it's size. Basically every 'feature' that I don’t like. I detest the design, both aesthetically and functionally.

I like them, at least some of them. They have a wide variety of styles so some of them I like and some I don't like.
A lot of people complain about the aesthetics. Spyderco designs are intended to function well, not look good. There is the old saying "beauty is as beauty does".
As for the blade hole I really value one-hand operation and for me the larger blade holes work better than any other blade opening devices.
I would buy Spyderco models with "ordinary" steels but I especially like the ones with steels such as M4, S110V, K390 and Rex45.

I love the classics, like Delica and Endura patterns, the rest is meh to me tbh.

Agree with the comments on theire HT and explorations in steels 👍

I always thought the hole was about the goofiest looking thing on any tool I’ve seen. But I bought a Manix 2 awhile ago anyway, just to see what all the fuss was about. I can see why people get into them. It feels solid, tight, capable and well built, the action is very nice, and it comes shaving-sharp. But it’s not the most comfortable knife in the hand that I own, either to hold or to operate. And I still think that hole is goofy as hell (especially on their fixed blades - I mean wtf is up with that). I don’t dislike it, but I also don’t like it enough to run out and buy another one.

I've owned several and currently own none.
They make a fine knife but they're just not for me.

So no, you're not the only one.

I LOVE the original full-size Manix with the lockback. Then they decided to change it to have a ball lock and add jimping, UNNECESSARY jimping.

The Manix was perfect the way it was and should have never been messed with.

However most of the time when they do make changes to their knives it has been an improvement.

Spyderco is my favorite knife company. I have many, probably to many. More than enough to last me the rest of my life. Maybe my wife and son can cash out after I die.

I like the Spyder hole and the many steel choices they offer. Quality is usually pretty good but I have received a couple that had problems.

I don't like to see the price increases but hell everything is going up today.

I love ‘em. My first Spyderco was a Worker with the almite scales. Bought it from a building engineer in an office building renovation, back in the ‘80’s as I remember. He sidelined selling Spyderco knives, and I never met the man, as he worked nights. He had a catalog of the knives on the desk in his office. I left a hand written note for him that I wanted to buy a Worker model. The next day there was a note from him for me, stating the price of the knife, and where to leave the payment. I put the cash in an envelope in his desk drawer. The next day after that, the NIB Spyderco Worker was waiting for me, in that same desk drawer.
After carrying that knife, off and on, for some 20 years, I mistakenly left it lying on a table in a breakroom on a job site. Ouch. Someone got themselves a nice little EDC.

I’ve tried over the years but I require at least some eye appeal in a knife. I own a couple Dodo’s but thats more for the quirk than for use. The knives are well made bit I have to want to carry and use a knife. For me, Spyderco does not inspire.

I like Spyderco very much. The models I own are purpose driven and do a good job for what they are designed for.

I hate all of mine. That's quite a bit of hate.

I'll probably hate some more over time.
You sound like me. I keep buying Spydercos to feed my sick compulsion to find out where the hatred and rage will take me!

But OP, seriously, you can’t find a better company to throw your knife dollars at. I don’t love all the Spyderco designs, but they are makers of some of my favorite knives.

The Chaparral, the Native, the Dragonfly, the Delica (especially with the Boomer52 mods) and the Slysz Bowie are some of my favorite knives.

I think Spyderco does best with smaller, shorter, slicier knives, but you have to be you.

Pick a design that you think might work and give it a try for a month. You might be surprised at how well it works in your hand and pocket.

Good luck!

Never owned a Spyderco until I joined the forum. Now I own 5 and really like them all, lots of variety in all aspects with TONS of aftermarket upgrades avaliable. Not super expensive (for the most part) and easy to use. Once you get past the odd shaped blades and trademark hole they're great knives.
