Ammo sales and future survival (another potential political thread)

During my time in the service, I put more rounds through the M-16 than I care to remember. It was a fun, practical piece of equipment for the service. I treated it well and it treated me well.

In the civilian world, an AR-15 is a fun gun to have. In the small police department where I work, I am the ONLY person who doesn't own one. The peer pressure to pick one up is heavy, but I just don't see the point. Yes it is fun to plink with, but I think for the money you spend on (a good one), you can be well on your way to owning a kick ass bolt action rifle that will allow you to reach out and touch what you are shooting at.

On Monday I shot a Winchester model 70 in .308 that was set up as a sniper rifle. Oh my God, that thing was awesome. I put a round through the center of a quarter at 400 yards. It was raining and blowing like a mother too!! I want one!!!

I don't want to start a fight about this but I have to add my two cents to this comment......

AR15's and AK's and not for only killing humans!!!! I have been a hunter all my life and have a ton of shotguns and hunting rifles. If you do the research and look at the 5.56 cal round you will find that it is just a 223. That is one step down from a VERY popular round known as the 270. I hunt with my 270 ALL the time but sometimes it is too much gun for the terrain I hunt in. My 223/5.56 AR15 is perfect for killing deer and similar sized animals. I mean again why do the Department of Fish and Wildlife say that the 223 is a acceptable round for Whitetail Deer. With a well aimed shot I have dropped deer at 100m. True it looks like a SWAT weapon however if I take off my laser it is now a very light and accurate hunting rifle. In a moments notice I can have a fully loaded multi purpose gun loaded in my truck with 2000 rounds ready to head out to the country to E&E. I can defend my family and put food on the campfire. I have twenty 30 round mags loaded with everything from hunting ammo to AP. On top of my AR, my shotgun, .22 a few handguns, multiple different types of knives and PLENTY of ammo for all are ready at a moments notice. I have a "Oh shit" rubbermaid box with everything that I would need. All I have to do is put it in the truck. All in all I could be out of my house with EVERYTHING within 10 min of receiving notice that the world is ending.

Again I don't want to start a war on this subject but people need to realize that these types of guns are not WEAPONS!!!! They are guns. A gun turns into a weapon when it is used to ASSAULT and DEFEND from attack, not to hunt. That is my opinion. I mean hell..... Why do you think soldiers call there firearms "WEAPONS" and not guns.... because they are using them to kill bad guys.

I personal don't care for AR's unless they're free. The only one I've ever really really loved was a Bushmaster Carbon 15 97S that I had. It was the top of the line carbon 15 and the thing was perfect. Other than that, I only like them for attacking humans, and in that scenario, one would be given to me by an armed force or police department. I do like the LAR's, but again, they are for killing people ONLY. No other practical application. I find that, even when it comes to battle rifles, I can do much better than an AR, M4, A2, etc. for nowhere near AR money. For survival type application, Any reliable and accurate firearm will do and there are plenty with small pricetags. Well.... there WERE.

Edit: One of the things that was so nice about the Carbon 15 97S when I had it was that there were NO aftermarket parts for them. They came with an attachable flashlight, muzzle break, and a detachable butt stock. That was it. You only had the option of which model you wanted. No way to bubba them up, even if you wanted to. It made keeping it light and simple very easy, since you had no other choice.

Not trying to start one of those 9mm vs. 45 debates, but why does everyone feel they need an AR platform / tricked out M4 to be good-to-go in a "survival" situation. Not talking about the guys here but it seems like the AR is the rifle that sells the best when these type of political things come up. I sort of figure all a man really ever needs is a good defense shotgun, good handgun and a good rifle and he will be set as long as he has the ammo to feed it. A man can do a LOT with a deer rifle that shoots well. About the only other gun I would add to that mix is a very good rimfire rifle in .22 mag or .17 HMR.

I think one of the real reasons for that is just the "don't mess with me" appearance of these types of guns. Yes, a good shooting bolt action will do most of what you need it to, but staring at a group of "looters" or "rioters" a scary looking rifle with a banana clip sticking out the bottom just seems to have more impact.

Secondly, those are the first types to be banned when Obama and Co. do their thing.

that is the reason I purchased a Mini 14 last year...Around the campsite accepted or to look mean and unfriendly hang a 30rounder or 100round beta magazine out of it.... plus it is reliable and at most major outdoor retail shops sell mini 14 items...

How do you like the Mini 14.......is it accurate? I have heard different things from different people about its accuracy.

I certainly see your point on all of this. My point is simply one of a cost versus application standpoint. I've had a ton of AR's of various types, especially during my "black rifle" phase, and I always spent WAY too much on something I could accomplish with a better gun for less money. I'm not saying they aren't great, but they were designed as and specifically work best as an assault weapon. My 270 bolt action was designed to be a hunting and woods gun and doesn't cost near as much as my two stage trigger equipped and heavily modded for long range AR and is twice as accurate. In my opinion, the people who are buying AR's for anything other than fighting, are doing so because it's cool and mean looking. Don't get me worng. There is NOTHING wrong with that. I love all black rifles and still get a big diamond cutter when I am holding onto a nasty tricked out M4. I just think of them more as a Chris Reeves hollow handle if you catch my drift. Still cool as hell, but my RC-4 will go through the same stuff.

As far as I'm concerned, pick whatever you want. At the end of the day, it's still your gun and your preference. ... so long as you let me pop off a few rounds if you see me eyeing it at the range. ;)

Hornady's 75-grain grouped just under an inch at 100yards on a bench, me holding the rifle 2"-4" grouping 5 rounds fired(one factory mag)... handy lil' carbine, points naturally, shoots well seems pretty accurate to me...now the barrell with heat up quickly if you bust off a 20 or 30 round mag quickly.... I have fired 520 round thru her and not one mishap....my Ruger mini 14 is the 580 series newer improved mini... I want a new mini 30 as well but looks doubtful with the guns prices going sky high now...

I think the Mini-14 is a very fine rifle. Wished I still owned one.

Indeed!!! And I agree with you totally. There are a TON of better guns for hunting and long range. I get your drift on the Chris Reeves angle.... cleaver guy!! :)

I looked over what I had on November 4 as the results came in.

I finished buying a Tantal I had laid away and now have two AK-74s.

Thanks to AIM Surplus, I am now five figures deep in Russian surplus 5.45x39.

I bought a Beretta PX-4 and five mags.

Now I have to find 1k 9mm JHPs, a case of 12 gauge slugs and a case of 00 buck, and a few dozen bricks of .22lr for the 10/22.

I also want to get a 14" pistol gripped Mossberg AOW shottie and rig a single point sling for it.

Then I'd be about ready.;)

P.S. Went jogging for the first time in years on Nov. 5. It sucked.

Boats the AK74 is a hell of a riffle man , That’s in my top ten all time favorites list …
Man I sold off allot of my riffles after the first Ban expired, still got enough , but dude that is a mistake I will not make again.

not trying to stir the pot or piss people off who voted for him but...

Tony man, could of done without that … I think my blood pressure just went back up.. They left off the 11 Enslave the nation and make all the people work in camps… Keep in mind Biden was one of the authors of the original ban and now he is our vice...
That just cant be good...
