Amsterdam Meet 2015 report of upcoming Spyderco prototypes

The Raven 2 is a new addition to the Byrd line. Even though Sal and Eric showed a few really fancy and expensive knives, they mentioned that they continue to want to provide good affordable working knives as well. The Raven 2 felt like a regular spydie to me. The fit and finish were very impressive and the knife had a linerlock with a good self-close and lock-up. The jimping on this sample could be a little sharper for me personally, but I also think the Taiwan made knives need sharper jimping – or none at all - so your mileage may vary. The Raven 2 was very impressive, especially for a Byrd knife.

I'll be picking up the Ion. Should be a nice user.

Really excited for the GB2, where's a preorder. :)

I love the Nirvana proto so far but am afraid that it will be quite expensive :o

Hope Wouter shows us Phil Wilson's B&T!

We all got a black Roadie in our goodie bag at the end of the meet, so I got the chance to play with the knife a bit more than the other knives in these posts. The Roadie is a good cutter that carries like pocket lint; it’s extremely light and small. With the Roadie, the Spydercrew may have finally made a slipit that I can’t open with one hand! Give me a little more time and I’ll probably find a way though. The colored variations felt like they were made from the same material as the black Roadie. I think this little slipit could also easily be carried on a keychain; the size, shape and weight make it a very easy to carry. The thicker sheepsfoot tip also inspires confidence for moderate prying to open very hard plastic packages etc…

The polished titanium Squeak had a nice solid feel to it. The added weight didn’t seem cumbersome at all to me, compared to the FRN production knife. The action and lock-up were still a little tight, but I’d rather have that than the other way around. I’m sure the action would improve with use. Although I only need a slipit when traveling to, or through, other countries with stringent knife laws, I do appreciate the ease of closing of these fine utility folders. Also, sprints like this titanium Squeaks are bound to keep the collecting hobby very interesting for our fellow knifeknuts that do need these slipits for EDC.

The Squarehead is a similar knife as the Dog Tag Folder. Personally, I could open and operate the Squarehead a little easier than the Dog Tag. Contrary to the Dog Tag folder, the Squarehead has a lock, which was also fine to operate one-handed. I’m not quite sure how the slot in the back of the handle would be of practical use though. I’m sure there is one, as this design didn’t seem like it left much space for superfluous details.

The Tighe Stick is design collaboration with Canadian custom maker Brian Tighe. It’s is also one of those designs that had been on the back burner for quite some time. I remember seeing the concept model back in 2005. Apparently it was tough to find the right maker that could build the knife with the consistent quality it needed. This production prototype of the Tighe Stick certainly looked and handled very impressive. If I carried a Mamba for EDC, then I’d probably want to clip on the Tighe stick for those suit & tie occasions. Even though I prefer smaller and simpler knives for EDC, I’m sure I’ll try to get a Tighe Stick ‘just because’ ;)

The Vrango was originally conceived as a pure utility design to be used for fishing, for example. The downward curve of the blade apparently facilitates line cutting, and the more conventional tip helps with all sorts of EDC tasks. It’s one of those knives that might take a little getting used to, but after a few minutes of handling it at the IWA Show I decided I ‘need’ one.

Those were all of the folding knife prototypes I can show you. Up next are the fixed blades, I hope to be able to post the first ones tomorrow evening. Thanks for looking!

Oh man, so many of these look awesome. Spyderco's 2015 line is going to break the bank. I like that a lot of this isn't peel ply CF too.

The Tighe collab looks awesome.

The Raven looks like a fantastic addition to the Byrd lineup. I'll definitely get one.

And the Vrango...is unique. It strikes me as the kind of knife that you'll appreciate much more after using it.
