And, Cold Steel wins....... as usual

I'm in the "who cares" camp on this. I tend to use tools appropriately and use my folders for those tasks for which they were designed, i.e. cutting and slicing, not for hanging weight, batoning, and other non-knife uses. I'll chop with an ax or hatchet, pry with a prybar, and hang objects from hooks, pitons, chains, etc. I've never had any lock--liner, frame, AXIS, back- or mid-lock--fail on me.

Nothing in Cold Steels' designs really speaks to me, though I've been tempted to pick one up just to try it out. I suppose it could take the place of a fixed blade, but I don't have any of those either.

A while back I was watching videos of Cold Steel comparing the strength of their triad lock vs lock designs from other manufacturers.
I’ll admit, these videos have really bummed me out in a way. I like Cold Steel, I currently own a couple of their machetes, but I have seen locks buckle under pressure much earlier than I expected. I’ll mention a couple that really stand out, Chris Reeve Sebenza and the Hogue compression lock.
These tests disappoint me more with other manufacturers than it encourages me to buy Cold Steel. What are your thoughts on these videos?

I don't need a lock to be all that strong. Slip joints have done all the work that I need so it really isn't relevant. I'd prefer to see how well the knife slices through a triple-walled appliance box.

I have more Cold Steel knives in my collection than any other brand (mainly because I started buying them around 25 yrs ago); 22 knives and MANY other items (tomahawks, spears, etc.). I have never purchased a single one because of one of their vids. So much for their impact on me.

Same for me. Cold steel is the brand of production knives I have the most of. Besides being good quality knives for the prices they make stuff like hatchets, spears, swords, shurikens which you don't see from other production knife companies. Was never really influenced by their videos either. I will probably tune in to more though. They get the mall ninja stigma but at the same time I see people using cold steels as users just as much as spyderco with their delica and endura.

I have a lot of Cold Steel knives but I don’t buy them because of lock strength I buy them because I like the design and they are a very good value for what you get.

If the Sebenza video was so bogus how come nobody has done a rebuttal video where they show the Sebenza not failing with 45lbs of downward pressure on the blade?

I’m genuinely curious about that.

After you sharpen a knife it probably cuts like a laser. You could probably get one sharp enough to slip through a triple walled appliance box like a sheet of notebook paper. Me on the other hand, not so much.

Cold Steel would be far less popular than they are had they never hired Andrew Demko and licensed his triad lock. I can’t stand their marketing and cheesy names they give their knives. Yes they have the strongest lock in the industry but it’s because of Demko not Thompson. I really wish Demko would have chosen a classier manufacturer to work for as I admire and respect his work apart from Cold Steel.

For the same reason why NASA won't debate flat earthers, why you don't play chess with a pigeon, and why you don't wrestle a pig.

I'm willing to bet some of these tests do hold some merit. Most likely no one who owns a $400 dollar sebenza wants to hear a $50 dollar cold steel has a stronger lock.

I am willing to bet the tests are a pure marketing and are stacked for the brand setting up the goalposts to win every time.

If you look at Demko's face as he's doing his master's bidding all you can see is regret.

...and because CRK and most knife owners don't care.

Why not? You don't buy a $400 CRK because you think it must have the strongest lock, and you don't buy a $50 CS knife because you think it's a high precision masterpiece.

A Bradly Alias is a much better choice.:D

Cold Steel makes a solid knife at a great price and I like the numerous ones that I own. The triad lock is awesome and most likely the strongest locking mechanism on the planet. I see their videos as chest thumping and juvenile at times.

That being said, I have full confidence in my Crk or any other folder that I own. Frame locks are very user friendly and safe. With my hand covering the lock bar, frame locks are about as safe as it gets in a folder. I also don’t recall many individuals being injured using their Sebenza due to lock failure.

This thread reminds me of one when liner locks 1st became popular. There were a few threads from people fearing that lock backs were unsafe. Similar threads came up when frame locks & axis locks & every time a new a lock comes out. OMG The sky is falling

Back on topic, a shiny new dime for the first person who p mails me a link to a Cold Steel video that shows their product to be inferior to another. Will extend this offer of the shiny new dime to include proof of aliens. By proof I mean something like a Nightline interview with a little green or gray man (Woody Allen doesn't count).
