Anodized Titanium

Those DO look great. Very nice.

I'm about to order a Chaves Redencion 228 and was trying to decide between the blue anodized Ti handle (with milled holes) or the standard gray Ti handle (no holes). Just trying to get info/thoughts on anodizing.

As others have said, anodizing a handle scale or pivot screw, standoff etc. can be striking when done nicely. There is flame anodizing and electric anodizing. Electric gives all those stunning shades of blue, green, yellow and purple to name a few. I have a Hinderer spanto fatty that has a blue anodized lockside. All working finish. The scale (g10 side) is blue with black bits. The ano blue and the g10s blue are the same shade. I think it looks nice and adds character to the knife. The color of the ano and what it complements on the knife are important.

I know the 228 w/ the blue ano you're talking about. I think it looks great but that's just my take. Another guy might hate it. I happen to think it works really well. For me though--if I were making the decision you are about to--I would forego the factory ano 228 and buy the "plain" one. It's just b/c I don't favor the holes in the handle. I would get the solid handle grey one and anodize it after-market. If you like the color of the blue clip Chaves sells for the 228, you could have your handle anodized to match it. That would be a nice look.

Remember also that titanium can be re-anodized too if the color wears or gets scuffed and things like that.

Is this type of anodization (rainbow/color fade) done with the electric current method described previously, or do you have to use heat (a torch) to do this style?

Are there any differences in the finished product between these two methods?

This sunrise anodized knife was done with electic current through a solution. I have never done heat anodizing so I could not say if it can be done or not.

I'm pretty sure this one is the electric method. Ano done that way generally tends to last better/longer and also doesn't void the warranty on these particular knives.

Didn't see that until after, lol.

I think anodizing can liven up a knife. Ti framelocks can be boring so a bit of color is often a welcome addition. That said, I've seen knives ruined by anodizing IMO. Crazy patterns or bright purple/green are examples that I don't like.

FWIW, I have been doing anodizing for several years, both flame and electro....the flame colors seem to resist printing a bit better than electro anodizing for some reason, but there is not nearly as much control. With electricity there are so many different things that can be done to layer and blend colors, and add graphics. Im a fan of multi colored washes...like blue with bronze, purple with gold, green with blue, etc. Anodizing is fairly easily removed chemically as well, so you can always erase and start over (though you don't want to do that too many times).

Well , I decided to go with the Redencion 228 with the plain stonewashed titanium handle. Can't wait until it arrives !

The blue Ti looks nice but I'm not crazy about the holes. So I went with my gut and got the plain stonewashed Ti.

And as was mentioned earlier , I can always have it anodized down the road if I choose.

I hear ya about the holes. I really like the blue color but you can always add that later like you posted.

Hope you put up some pics when you get it!

My congrats to Whitty for bringing these great anodized folders to my attention. His website offers many versions/colors of some superb ZT models. I'm particularly fond of the light blue...and he doesn't charge any extra for that service.

I love titanium that's been anodized; especially in a blue/light blue color!

Just ordered the Redencion today so I won't have it untill next week. Im absolutely stoked for this knife !

Anodizing seems so mysterious to me. So you add high heat or voltage to Ti and it changes color ? How ?

Also , is the Chaves Redencion 228 considered to be a "mid-tech" ?

It just does bro, it's the oxide layer that changes. Think of it as a colorful patina on carbon steel.
