Another FFBM make-over!

Looks like a lot of work but the results are looking good! You guys are inspiring me. I'm going to have to give this a try.

I amm on my way to D-Land but here is a quick update with pics. I'll explain them later. Lots of work left to be done.

I have only done some work with the 60 grit.

Does anyone use this products to give a satin finish ? This is what professionals use to satin stainless steel.

Aye... Tyrkon has used Scotchbrite wheels on a few knives...

But you need to do more if you want to rid the blade of dimples, artifacts, alien runes and machine marks..

Good luck, Tyrkon...I think you might need it! Great project! :D And a thanks to Soup Monger for showing the glass plate setup. I, too, am curious how much cursing and how many bandaids will be required for this!

Whereas I, a more technical person, am principally interested in the ratio of skin lost (surface area only, please) to perfect satin finish gained.

If it ain't well below 1.0 ... it will be ... a NO GO. :D

:(:eek::grumpy:

Yep! Lots. And all this on a user. :p

I'm not trying anything on Ban's level. Just trying to clean it up a but and perhaps remove the dimples. Then beat the heck out of it. :D

One thing I've noticed is that the older Busse's...ground by hand, are much more uneven than the new one's, so putting a uniform finish is a lot tougher as I'm finding out....I did a CGSHBM, but for some reason that knife was freakishly even...still a lot of work on the new one's though!!! Have you thought about what fasteners you're going to be using? Screws? I haven't been able to locate any myself, but I'm sure there's a place to pick some up!

Tyrkon,

This one is turning out very nicely. You came up with a very good solution to do the hand sanding

Are you also using that rubber sanding block to do the saber grind? Did you notice any rolling and blending of the saber grind into the flats?

Can't wait to see the pics Tykon.

I got one side of the RD to 600 grit today, the other is stuck at 220 -- my hands, fingers and forarms are VERY sore!

Good luck buddy.

Good luck, Looks like your gunna snort some magical INFI dust huh?
Can't wait to see it finished.

You are the only one that caought that. I thought for sure I'd be getting PMs over that. I wonder what the street value of INFI dust is? :p Let's ask Skunk. ;)

Thanks. The 2x4 is a big help for me. I'll try to detail it's uses later but I know you get the idea.

As far as the saber grind goes, in my quest to clean up the dimples I am hoping to make it look more like a full flat grind but doing this by hand it aint going to happen. I think that what I'll end up with is a blade that looks flat but being thicker (buldge) where the saber grind is. We will see.

I am finished with one side of the blade and need to now clean up the choil and tang area to get them dimple free as well. Then flip and repeat on the other side. This part seems like it will be the most difficult. Most of the heavy sanding is done here to remove the dimples. After that it's just a matter of applying the desired finish. And there is always the scotch-brite if I get too tired. :D

For the handles I was thinking of using screws like on the old straight handles. I already have some from my old RD-9 and they fit fine. Does any one know of a good place to order the screws/tubing for the handles? Arizona knife & gun?

Thanks.

BTW: I'll probably do a series of short vid clips on the second side, once I work out the bugs on the first, in case anyone is interetsed. Learn from my mistakes. :D

Tyrkon,

Keep us posted with some pics of your progress. I am sure others including myself can learn a great deal from your experience.

I am sure that changing that saber grind to a flat grind will be some serious hogging of material. Have you considered trying a coarse diamond hone?

You can get those 1/4 tubings from knifekits.com and texasknife.com. If you are going to use those solid tube fasteners then you will need to get a step drill and larger size bolt than the 1/4" because the hole is already drilled for 1/4"

These should do the trick.

Ban: I am not really trying to get rid of the saber grind. Way too much work by hand. But by removing the grind lines I hope it looks a little more flat. I am just trying to remove the dimples. I will remove as little INFI as possible so as not to mess with the strength of the blade or void the Busse warranty. ;)
