Another FFBM make-over!

Yeah I know  I thought I heard flat grind somewhere in the thread...thats why :D

You did. I used it "incorrectly, trying to describe the look I am going for.

I noticed that the screws on the RD-9 are flared so they fit into the handle slabs but won't pull through. That way, as you tighten the screws they hold the handles on. This seems like the easiest solution. Any thoughts?

I have never seen a Ranger knife. But those angled countersunk screws sound like a great idea. That would be a perfect solution for those that want to have swappable handles. It also makes it far easier to install and remove. Do you have pics of them? I wonder if there is a online source for them.

Pics tonight. :D

Also, I am pretty sure that if you email Justin at Ranger Knives he'd probably tell you where he got them. I will do that later and share the info. But you are correct in that it would make it easier to swap handles, clean under them (if that is ever needed), etc... Mostly, for me, it is easy.;)

Tyrkon, don't the ranger slabs screw into the actual tang of the knife, not into each other???

Here's a pic (of a RAT - don't ban me) -- I've got one side up to 600 grit, the other is 2 steps behind...

Looking forward to the pics Tyrkon

Nice work.

The RD9 I had had threaded tubing that fit in the 1/4" holes in the handle. They were threaded at both ends. Then it had screws on either side side to secure the handles as you tighten them. I'll take some pics tonight.

That looks awesome Eli!

Thanks Ban, but I still may need to send it to you for the scales!!!

I'm wanting to put some wood slabs on her... I have no idea what I'm doing (LOL!)

I don't know buddy???? That looks awefully nice for not knowing what you are doing. :D

I wonder if Ban will charge me more to fix the damage I do here than he would have if I would have just sent it to him. :D

yeah, don't look too close at the Tip!

Tyrkon, be VERY careful at the tip... LOL

Hey man are you toying with me???? :) I don't see anything wrong with the tip. Seriously, it looks fine. Did you leave the bevel too thick or something? Or did you round it over?

This is killing me. I keep checking this thread on breaks or transitions between activities. But work pretty much blocks all pics. I can't wait to get home and see what I am missing. ;)

Tyrkon,

You are missing out big time bro! Lots have been discussed and shown while you were not able to view! By the time you get back home much of the stuff covered would have already been edited or have become obsolete! LOL :D

I definitely rounded it over...

Oh well, this one is a USER for sure (And I can position the pics to show only those parts I want to show ;))

Now, about those scales...

xaman: I see what you mean about the tip. Not a biggy on a user. But you could always work it into a drop point to fix that. Or.....send it to BAN and stand in line. :D BTW: that finish looks great. I am going to try to do some more tonight. Man my forarms hurt. :(

Yeah, both my fingers and forearms are screaming after a few evenings of this...

Let me know if you hear from Justin about where to get the screws for the scales.

Hmmm... everyone has shunned my technique of placing both hands on the blade and grinding the blade itself against the sandpaper.... :(

Doing it my way does take a lot longer... and it is more painful... but.. it does give you perfectly flat results... if that's what you were after...

The finish on that Rat looks good though... and I expect TL's BM will end up looking really good too.

Feel the burn. :D

Absolutely not! Your method, I imagine, is much beter for achieving more consistant flats. I just went with what would work best for me given my current set up. Yours came out excellent.:thumbup:

xaman & ban: Here is a pic of the flared screws and tubing I got from justin a while back. I need to clean them up before using. I'd like to see if I can find some with a little more diameter on the heads. We'll see.

Soup,

I saw what you were talking about, but didn't know how it would work trying to come down each step in finer grits....

I alternated directions, first vertical, then horizontal, vertical again, and so on. I wanted to end horizontal -- just seemed easier to maintain.

So, do you just keep all your sanding marks horizontal (lengthwise)? If so, do you sand with each grit until the previous grit's marks are completey erased (if so, how would you be sure they were really gone if they are all moving the same direction?)

thanks!
