Another FFBM make-over!

Tyrkon, any idea where to find those, without bothering Justin???

I assume they are hex-head?

Soup,

I saw what you were talking about, but didn't know how it would work trying to come down each step in finer grits....

I alternated directions, first vertical, then horizontal, vertical again, and so on. I wanted to end horizontal -- just seemed easier to maintain.

So, do you just keep all your sanding marks horizontal (lengthwise)? If so, do you sand with each grit until the previous grit's marks are completey erased (if so, how would you be sure they were really gone if they are all moving the same direction?)

thanks!

Yeah... same direction (lengthways) for the flats... although I used the opposite direction for the sabre grind bevels until it was time for the final finish.

Working up through the grades while sanding in the same direction was no problem.

I just use a light to look for marks or low spots and I mark them with a permanent pen.... then back to sanding the whole blade until the pen mark has gone.... and check again.

:)

xaman & ban: Here is a pic of the flared screws and tubing I got from justin a while back. I need to clean them up before using. I'd like to see if I can find some with a little more diameter on the heads. We'll see.

Thanks Tyrkon! Now all we need to know is where to get them :D I suppose I can just use the 1/4 stainless tubing and tap the threads into it. But that would be more trouble than it is worth. The screws appear to be standards countersunk screws and should be available in Flat Head, Phillips, Hex, and maybe even Torx.

I have posted this site before. You can find just about any tools and hardware there.

Search for threaded round spacer and flat head socket cap screw. They come in stainless steel, brass, aluminum and plastic.

Thanks for the info. I am familiar with McMaster. Alot of times I get lost trying to find what I want ;)

Update:

Yesterday I was able to get rid of most of the dimples on the blade by hand sanding with a rubber block and 80 grit paper. Today I removed the little bit that remained on the blade, then the ricasso and butt areas. And this is the great part. After the 600 grit I just tested the scotch-brite wheel that we have discussed in other threads. Here is what I got.

Bad lighting but I think it looks pretty darn good for a user. And if I can get away with just hand sanding with 80 grit and then the scotch-brite method to clean it up then I am going to be a happy HOG! :D

Now it's time for side two. :(

Wow. It's looking pretty good TL. I've been checking in on this thread from time to time too. Thanks for the info and step by step pics guys. I'm very new to making any of my own mods so threads like these really help out.

After 40 min, with a few breaks, I am about 1/2 finished on the blade. Tomorrow I hope to finish it up and get the handles on. I hope. :D

But there are some of those zig zag grind marks on the ricasso that I expect will give me some trouble. :(

That's lookin really good, Tyrkon.

You should be able to get away with the 80 grit to Scotchbrite if your last sanding is with fairly worn out 80 grit paper.

Once it's finished... you will be able to clean it up any time you like with your Scotchbrite wheel.

Good stuff. :)

Looking great TL:thumbup:

I've never asked, but do you and Guyon require sleep:confused::p

Yeah those marks are sometimes real deep and can be a real pain. I have seen some FFBM's with those marks running from the handle all the way down pass the middle of the blade on the flats. But then again I have also seen some that are zigzag free. I remember Solstice had one that was really nice underneath. It looked almost like factory DC after he did some sanding and Bead Blasting.
