Another FFBM make-over!

Today I ordered some 1/2" long standoffs threaded for 8-32 screws, along with a pack (100, yeesh) of SS black oxide hex screws in 8-32 3/8" long. If they fit I'll be happy to sell some of the 94 extra screws. :)

Bro, why did you get the 1/2" stand offs? I ordered 1/4" for mine. Didn't you want it basically flush with the tang? I suppose you could offset into the scales from the backside, to give your screws more threading/security?

Okay, since I already have 1/4" standoffs that are threaded to fit 8/32" machine screws like these: http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRI...opmainPcircularid=11264Ppagenumber=1994Pmode=

I am going to order these: http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRI...opmainPcircularid=11264Ppagenumber=1864Pmode=

Note: the main things you want to make sure are:

(1) The standoffs are 1/4" in length. This will fit flush with the handles.
(2) Make sure your screws are threaded to fit the standoffs.
ex: My standoffs are threaded for 8/32" screws so my screws need to have 8/32" threads also.
(3) Finally, amke sure your standoffs are between 1/4"-5/16" in length. Any longer and you will most likely have to cut and rethread them. :( I will verify whether 1/4" or 5/16" work better.
(4) For every standoff you need two screws. I am using 3 standoffs so I need 6 screws.

I'll post an update once the standoffs and screws arrive.

Thanks.

I just double checked with Justin of Ranger Knives and he says that he sometimes uses screws with a length of 1/4" but most are 3/8th" screws. I will probably order both just in case.

BTW: I gave him a big thanks from all of us. He is really a class act. Great guy to deal with and awesome knives.

I figured it like this:

The FFBM is .310 in the tang alone.
I want good secure threading from the screws on each side.
The handles are 1/4" ID just like the tang, so I figure if the standoff extends inside the handle .095" on each side then with the 3/8" screws I should get good threading on each side.
The only thing that remains to be seen is if the fasteners will sit down snug in the countersunk holes when fully tightened.

Of course I may be wrong on this, since it was guesswork. I'll let you know when I get mine.

This is good. Let us know how it works out.

I checked to see what the cost would be and here is what it will cost me:

Screws x 100 (the only come in 100s)
Standoffs x 6 (3 for now and 3 extra)
Shipping
Total = approx $27.00

I am going to check local hardware stores and electronic stores to see if I can find them since I know what to look for now. Otherwise I will order these by Saturday. The way I look at it is that I'll have enough spacers to do 2 knives and enough screws to last a life time. So not too bad.

During our search I noticed that the screws and standoffs I needed were also used in computers. So on a hunch I stopped by my local Frys Electronics. No standoffs but I scored the screws I needed. These were silver and flat heads. A box of 20 for just over $1.00

The last step is to get this bad boy back to scary sharp again.

Then it's time to beat the heck out of it. :D

Thanks guys. i have some black torx head screws on order and might replace these. We'll see. But these fit perfectly. 8/32" thread and 1/4"length.

Sweet!!! Nice job on that FFFBM!!! I like it!! :D:thumbup::thumbup:

OK now we are getting some where. I bet you can mix and match handles now. I bet some tiger hide would look good on that.

I wonder if FSH handles will swap as well. I have a DC HOFSH that would look killer with some tiger hide from one of my FBM LE's A FBM LE with some hand smoothed Mags would look cool too.

I maybe a drilling fool!

It looks great I take my hat off to you .

And if they ever come loose use some .. Blue Loctite...the red would hold to much but the blue would work great. They'll never come loose unless you want them to we use the blue on the harley's and they shake rattle and roll
Thats why we use the blue so if u need to take the bolt off you can.

I just thought it would be something to think about so they don't come loose after or during some chopping

This turned out AWESOME TL!!!!

and the stand offs are a cool idea... interchangable handles will be great too. :D

clintg: Chuddy Bear made the sheath. You can PM/Email him here. :)

Justabuyer: Wasn't that frustrating just trying to find out where to get the dang screws and standoffs? Or even just the names of the darn things? Sheesh. But now we know. Interchangable handles sounds awesome. ;)

NORCAL HUNTER: I was thinking about that. The locktite but I didn't know which to use. I heard that some are pretty permanant. So the Blue will hold the screws but still allow me to unscrew them?

Thanks to everyone for all the hard work, input, and ideas. We work pretty darn good together. Kinda like the Borg but with kool-aid. :D

Should we make this a link on our blog?
