Another FFBM make-over!

I just received an email response from Justin of Ranger Knives regarding the spacers and screws he uses to attach his handles.

He says that we can get the spacers from MSC, Enco or Pop Knife supply. THe screws can be gotten at MSC, Enco, ADI Fasteners or Fastenal.

BTW: He wishes us all luck in our projects. Justin rocks. ;)

Thanks xaman. I am going to swing by Ace Hardware after work and see what I can find. I know they have some but not sure if they are the correct size.

wow, i just spent 20 minutes trying to figure out what i needed on those sights... If you figure it out, please send me a direct link!

man, it really stinks to be slow...

TL that's nice work man! Looks like a LE from the pics! Wish I had a spare beater FBM to try this one...Hell, wish I had one!

hahaha.... I have the same darn problem when browsing places like McMasters. Their selection is HUGE!

What length screws would you suggest? 1/4" 5/16"

I know it depends on how thick you make the handle slabs... But what size does Justin use on the RD's? They only sell them in packs of 100!

Here is the data on the screws and the tube/spacer:

IMG_2934.jpg

Screws: 8/32" machine thread and 5/16" long
Tube/Spacer: threaded for 8/32" machine screws, 1/4" OD, 5/16-1/4" length.

Today I ordered some 1/2" long standoffs threaded for 8-32 screws, along with a pack (100, yeesh) of SS black oxide hex screws in 8-32 3/8" long. If they fit I'll be happy to sell some of the 94 extra screws. :)

You mean you don't have enough knives to use all the screws?

:p

Very cool. Keep us updated. :)

Justin ROCKS indeed. Great guy badass knives!!!

All right guys and gals. I am pretty much finished with my FFBM make over. I am going to order fresh screws for the handles but the ones I used are fully functional. Anyway, I finished up the second side and then did the scotch-brite treatment to the entire blade. I used the medium wheel.

Here I put the threaded tubing/spacers in. They are 1/4" OD and threaded to fit 8/32 machine screws. I had to lightly tap them in and they were snug.

Next these are the screws I used. They are 8/32" machine thread and approx 5/16" in length. These are just temporary until I get some nicer ones.

I suppose I could smooth it out a bit more but this bad boy is a user. So I think this is it for now. But Once the handles were secure I hit the entire blade again with some scotch-brite. I achieved my main goal which was to remove the INFI dimples. You'll notice that one of the handle screws is different from the rest. But I'll be replacing all of them in the very near future.

This was quite the project. My arms are killing me. :o The hardest part was getting rid of the dimples along the saber grind at the top. The rest seemed like cake. Lots of work but I am happy with it. The last thing I need to to is git it with the edge pro to get it scary sharp. But I have already tested it and it still sinks super deep into my tree stumps. What a beast.

Time to rest. Good luck to everyone trying something similar and we can keep this thread going with updates on things like the spacers/tubing, screws, etc... Thanks for all the input here.

Simply amazing Tyrkon!!!! You've inspired me to to town again on my 1/300!!!

Just a quick recap on the tools used to get rid of the dimples and give it an amature satin finish.

Materials:
(1) 1 rubber block hand sander.
(2) 1 pack of sticky 60 grit sand paper for sanding block.
(3) Medium scotch-brite drill attachment and drill.
(4) Lots of patience and elbow grease.
