Another rehandling job

...and just to show i do have a few users, here's my kitchen counter tonite with my main cooking knives.

L to R: 1. 'viking' chopper, 2. roman chef's knife, 3. damascus utility knife 4. generic schlock utility knife. used to have a TiN edge one side. 1&2 do the heavy stuff, 3&4 do most of the work tho.

I see what you mean, those don't look nearly as sturdy as the real deal. I wonder if they're supposed to be Khodmi knockoffs or if they're supposed to be Vendetta knockoffs?

pretty bad when you get indian knock-offs of an algerian knife. i know a number of collectors, some of whom have actually been to the region and bought 'real' khodmis, which are still in use and still in production.

yes, mine: the thimble on the scabbard end is not traditional, was added by someone before i got it ;)

also a collectable. they still make them of course. saw one for sale recently with the traditional scabbard , grip wrap, decorative blade, etc. , touted as a 'viking' knife. they are called 'khodmi' and come from the bou saadi region.

I never cease to be amazed by the size and variety of your collection. And yet I suspect we've only seen the tip of the iceberg.

It's comforting to know that there are folks out there who are more obsessed than I am. :D

Kidding aside, I appreciate what a font of information (and pics) you are.

Time to finish that last parang. I decided to put a butt plate on this one by using a bolt and a few washers. The KVLUK being my inspiration here.

It isn't going to really add any functionality to the parang and it's just going to make it heavier than it needs to be, but I thought it might look cool. Next step, wrap the micarta. I think this time I'm going to dye the cloth brown rather than attempt to dye the acrylic resin.

Nice job BL! Just a hint comes to mind since your a fellow fabricator:D. You can buy freeze plugs (Engine block plugs) at many auto parts that come in brass that are about the shape of pipe caps but are brass. Some are steel but you can get either. They come in so many different sizes and thicknesses etc. They make good bolsters and pommels when you cant find the right size pipe cap. I like what your doing there! This tip just came to mind FWIW.

That'd look much nicer... it's not too late for me to redo this one and use a freeze cap, I'm going to mull it over. It'll match the bolster and it'll weigh less.

i'm not terribly fond of hex nuts or bolts on knife pommels, a peened end is more traditional and implies more care taken and a more secure tang. you could alsways dremmel it to lookpeened .

That's a good idea. I could grind it down until you couldn't tell what it actually was. Honestly I'm rethinking the whole thing. This is a utility knife for my own personal use, and the pommel will only make it less useful because of the additional weight and possibly more "amateurish" looking to boot.
