Another sad day for all of us

It is with immense sadness that I come here to advise you that today Wally Gardiner called to inform me that Canal Street Cutlery was closing.
Oh no. :( :( :(
Very sad to hear this. :( :( :(

In light of this, I am very glad they were chosen for our forum knife. At least I will have something to remember them with. :(

As someone who has owned a business here in New York. I can speak from personal experience.

It is very tough for a small business to survive here.

Sad day indeed!

Some seriously sad news, this makes this years forum knife even more special. Smoke goin' up for the owners and employees of Canal Street Cutlery, hoping you all find what you need to continue making the knives we all love.

it sucks when smaller, quality oriented companies go under. always a huge loss to the employees, whom may be invested in the company, and a different loss for those of us who enjoy their blades and work. what a freakin' bummer.

Wally lost some key employees, who came over from Schrade with him.
His secretary/assistant who was a trusted and valuable friend as well, passed away too early in her life. Wally was unable to fill that important position.
He also had a huge turnover - 30+ people this year!!
It's tough on everyone there. Eric had to train and oversee people, as well as make knives. I think Wally had to cut his losses.

This is sad. My thoughts are with the owners and employees. This close to xmas is especially harsh.

As someone who is new-ish to the traditional realm I have not been able to get any of the CSC offerings. I didn't get in on the forum knife either.

When are they actually stopping production?

Another bit of the old America laid to rest - it is a sad part of the passing of an age. OH

Truly sad news. I wanted a Canittler for the longest time. Glad I finally got one. Might have to get something else from CSC while I still can.

I might have dreamed this but I thought I read a thread somewhere on Bladeforums a few months ago stating that CSC was taking on some kind of new endeavor. Fixed blades or maybe tactical folders. Or maybe it wasn't knives at all. My memory of the information is vague but I could swear I read something like that. Did I dream that?

Very sad news indeed, sorry to think about the workforce losing their jobs. Thoughts go out to the families involved, including our forum member Eric.

Wasn't this an unfounded untrue rumor not to long ago?
I just visited the CSC website. New models being offered and everything. (admittedly, it may be out of date; "Copyright 2005")
At any rate, nothing about shutting down.

Please refer to post one in this thread. It would seem (to me anyway) to have come from a reliable source.

I am very sad to hear this. Schrade was the knife company of my childhood, and Canal Street Cutlery allowed me to still enjoy them.

This is very unfortunate. Like others have said, I am extremely grateful to have gotten in on this years forum knife. This will be extra special now.
I wish the employees well.

Man, that's a gut punch.

Edit: I had just realized that their knives were super nice via a Kabar Dog's Head Barlow. I really want one of their (Kabar) stockman knives in American Chestnut.

I've always wanted a cannitler, too. This all makes me frown. *sad face*
