What a beauty Eric !!! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::)

Great score Eric. Iconic knife by an iconic company. What does the etch say?

I've heard that shield called a "cloud" shield, but I'm not sure if that's something that was made up by recent collectors or was used "back in the day."

Looks like the etch says Hammer Brand with the Hammer Brand logo between Hammer and Brand Mike.

The shield is a Gimp style variation, but, not sure of a proper name. Tony Bose has used that shield on some of his customs, including the large coke bottle Case/Bose Collaboration knife back in 2007. He might know the proper name for the shield.

The shield is in fact called The New York Knife Company shield, as it was their design. You can buy them form a knife makers supply and that is what they call them. :)

Nice knife, with some period paperwork! Makes a great display - as I am sure we all appreciate!!
Thanks for showing it to us, Eric!!

I like the letter too Charlie:

"I have heard that you are back in town and I wondered if you cared to come back to work. I have a place for you in the celluloid room.

Celluloid room? :eek: That's all you got? :eek: Should I buy my casket now? :eek::confused::D

No wonder why life expectancy was much younger back in those days. I am sure that if the young man had something against celluloid, they might have alternatively placed him in asbestos tearing and packaging. :eek::D:D:D

Thanks for the comments and info guys, never actually knew what the shield was called myself. NYK and Cattaraugus had some really unique styles.

I actually think the guys in the celluloid shops had a better life expectancy than the grinders. Silicosis ran rampant back in those days among those working the wheels.

Mike, here's a slightly better shot of the etch, it's faint but still there:

Oooh Eric, that model is a grail knife. Well done on searching out such a fine example.

Fantastic knife in sooo many ways! Some of the best jigged bone ever done, stamped head bolster, rat-tail pivot bolster, awesome swedge and long pull (placed how I prefer them), iconic shield, and what a clip blade! Looks like a deeply hollow ground sabre with a wonderful point. And a mid-lock. What a treat!

Congratulations, Eric! That is a beauty... even better that it is one of your grail knives. :thumbup:

Top Tier, Eric! And coupled with the document....a little museum masterpiece:thumbup::thumbup:

In my search for vintage Barlows, this one was way up there on my list. I've had it for awhile, but realized last night, as I was viewing this thread, that I had not posted a pic. Here 'tis...
