Beautiful barlow Al, incredibly full blades!

I've been looking through old digital copies of Boys Life magazines, the official magazine of the Boy Scouts, reading the old articles and ads. There is a wealth of information in those old publications.

One of the things I am doing as I work my up from March, 1911, the first issue of publication, is recording the appearance of knife ads and copying the knife/axe/hatchet/tools ads.

The first knife ad appears in the third issue, April 1911. (March 1911 had 2 issues.)

The ad was for a 2 blade knife with watch fob chain by the New York Knife Company.

Here's the ad - from the text, you can see that the advertiser, Perry & Co., was actually trying to entice young scouts to sell their product "Sylvan Bouquet" sachets, and remit the money back to Perry & Co,, in exchange for having the knife sent to them.

I'll eventually post up a separate thread in Traditionals of the knives of Boys Life.

Super craftsmanship on the NYKCo, Primble! Just a lovely piece and glad you saved the old covers

Nice save, Rob! Nice, deep bolster stamps!!

Thank you Gevo and Charlie. I tried my best to copy the factory bevels to the bolster and Mark did a great job on hiding the pivot pin without disturbing the bolster patina very much. I went up to 2000 grit for the Ebony and it is smooth as glass - maybe too smooth. I might rough it back up a bit, I dunno.:confused::D After I finished, I oiled the joint and it is very snappy at every stop.

Beautiful knives in this thread, I love the barlow restoration.

I've become interested in vintage pearl handled knives and have these two Hammer Brands. I believe the smaller is a quill knife, and the other is pattern 2005 "Senator" (per the scanned Voyles listing posted earlier in the thread - thanks!)

I have not posted in this thread for awhile, but I think this one needs to be shown. Here is my latest addition to my collection of NYKCo. This one is early I think with oval stamps and Hammer Brand etch on the master. Swell center 5 blade 3 spring.

Wonderful find Charles ! The tang stamps, etch, and liner file work puts it in a class by itself !!!:)

This large (4 1/8" closed, not including ring) rope knife was posted by Mike (galvanic1882) back in post #221, but now it resides in my NYKCo. collection. Thanks Mike
