Any Pop's ProCut Dialogue?

Humidity level? I've heard something about forge welding in the rain.
Edit. If Bos did heat treatment I don't think humidity level would be a variable.
Something with shearing/cutting?

Hoss has ruled out just about everything obvious. Maybe something like stress corrosion cracking could be at play but I would hope that’s not the case. I vaguely remember some metals cracking due to cracks in surface oxidation propagating into the base metal but it seemed like that was more of an issue with aluminum and/or titanium. Material science lab was decades ago… I’m curious to see what he comes up with.

Looking back at my order, all 3 of my sticks of Procut (3/32”, 1/8” and 3/16”) are end cuts. Not sure if that makes any difference but I’m willing to do some science on them if needed to help figure this out. If nothing else I’d be happy to try to replicate results if I can. I haven’t used any of it yet. I have ovens and a hardness tester in the shop but don’t have a cryo setup.

What's an end cut?
What different cuts are there, what to look for in the future?

It’s either cut across the end of a plate (across the grain) or the piece along the edge of the plate. I can’t remember which. Essentially they’re the oddball pieces left over along the edge of a plate after it has been cut up into standard sizes and generally slightly cheaper. There was a description when I bought it but I can’t find it now. I was mainly interested in making coupons for grain and hardness testing and a few test knifes when I got it.

Pops is helping him. There is no clear evidence that anything was wrong with the steel.

The fact that it's flaking apart like a damn Pilsbury biscuit is pretty clear evidence that something is wrong. If nothing was wrong with it, we wouldn't be here right now.

Something can go wrong without it being a fault with the material. I have not yet seen clear evidence it was the material. It’s not because I need to defend the product; if we can throw a steel manufacturer under the bus then by all means let’s make them take care of this. But I haven’t seen that.

What bothers me here is that you refuse to acknowledge that anything is wrong whatsoever.

You proceeded to write an entire article that provided no insight whatsoever on the problem, and simply danced around it, and to make matters worse, it gave me the idea that you were trying to put the blame on Crag, or at least on BOS. At least that's how I see it, correct me if I'm wrong.

Your conduct throughout this thread, in my eyes, has been totally devoid of sympathy, and to be honest that puts a bad taste in my mouth.

Don’t derail this thread into chaos. This is literally one data point. The only other failure with Procut I’ve seen was on another site where someone was forging it at what appeared to be the temperature of the sun.

We know this is a new steel. We know Crag knows how to make a knife. Bos stated it was their first time working with it. Other than that we know absolutely nothing. Any steel will fail under the right conditions. It’s normal when a steel fails like this to look at how it was heat treated and how it’s being worked. Nobody is pointing fingers.

I have several hundred dollars of this steel in the rack that I offered up to help figure out what is going on.

If all you can contribute is accusations then go away.

God forbid someone have a dissenting opinion.

Someone let me know when the mystery is solved.
