Yeah, I have a hard time believing that after 300 cuts it still shave **in the spot that was doing the cutting.**
Power cord? With metal? I sincerely doubt even my customs in M390 at Rc 62 would be able to still shave after 300 cuts through that. Actually I suspect even a serrated edge would dull quite a bit after that.

Aren't these figures a bit ridiculous to expect of a knife and not a lightsaber? 300 cuts through manila rope would sound more reasonable, but 300 cuts through metal doesn't sound reasonable even if said metal is solid gold.

Yes, I have frequently wondered about that myself. Many manufacturers seem happy to use 154-CM as well as S30/5V but totally ignore CPM-154. Like you say custom makers long ago discovered the benefits of this steel but manufacturers continue to treat it like a red-headed stepchild. Which doesnt make any sense to me.
Truth be told, from a consumer standpoint I don't see a significant advantage in CPM-154 over S30V. Though if manufacturing costs is the issue then CPM-154 seems like an obvious solution to that. The only possible downside I see is that austenizing times are doubled for CPM-154 and cryo treatment is recommended.

I would see it more as a replacement to 154-CM which is still widely used. But makers who have tested and used it find it finishes very nicely and is very tough. Check out Scott Gossman's tests with a CPM-154 knife: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/793753-UNK-CPM154-gets-it-done

Here's Scott putting S35VN to the test: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/763481-Cpm-s35vn-t-amp-e-wip

It did great, I guess its all in the heat treat.

I am of the opinion that if I cant see it, it didn't happen. I would love to see any knife making 300 cuts through extension cord w/o losing its shaving sharp edge

Of course it happened, CRK said it did. And that's 3 wire cord too. :D

Very impressive. I wish he'd have said what his treatment of the steel was. He mentions everything but the HRC. :(

Rick Hinderer is running his at 61-62HRC (per his listed info) on S35VN and I've cut up two boxes and a bit of rope with one. Not a big test or on video but you can see there's no problems with it.

Here's the 2nd box (tossed the 1st one from a previous day) it's not my favorite one of his steel offerings but it'll do. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...S35VN-characteristics?p=10264336#post10264336

The same reason why I haven't tested any of their other knives on rope for the comparison in edge retention, they are too thick behind the edge for the testing.

I wasn't able to test some other knives along the way either for the same reason.

Also when the knives are $500 a pop for something with a long enough blade to test that just might have something to do with it.

Sometimes things just don't fit into a neat little box for various reasons.

The ones that are thin enough for me to test are around $1800 each. ;)

Actually, there's the Strider SJ75 Baby Hughie, ground thin, sells for 400.00. Even the Mick Strider carbon fiber version sells for 900. Just saying.....

On a personal note. I find all the big red X's far more offensive than trivial words like "sucks". I think it's pretty apparent this forum is more about politics and placating the herd, then about knives. It's ok esav, I realize you need to run around editing out silly little words, otherwise you'll just be left to your own amusements :jerkit:.
... and to the inevitable responses on the bullshit pretense of aiding esav. lol Have at it, bitches.

NOT LONG ENOUGH TO TEST...... ;)

The blade has to be around 4" or close to it for me to test it using my method.

AND it's $400 at that for a knife I can't even test in the 1st place..... Even an SmF would be pushing it because of the large choil, not enough cutting edge.

The number of people talking about cutting power cables like it's a crime kinda makes me ill. Do you even use your knives? Any average person would think you're absolutely insane if you bothered carrying a knife, especially an expensive one you like to talk about how great the super steel on it is, then refused to cut through some extension cord or ethernet cord because you didn't want to 'hurt the knife'.

I think too many people own knives they can't afford to use and they lose touch with how a knife is supposed to be used. They like to talk about how it's a tool, but it seems to be nothing more than jewellery for quite a few folks.

It's always funny to witness the obsession with harder steels, stronger locks, etc. then people freaking out because you dared to use a knife for something a dollar store box cutter couldn't do.

I have to agree with this. I've used different brand knives for 35+ years to cut power cords, extension cables, and the like with absolutely no damage to the knifes edge. Bucks, Gerbers, Schrades, Spydercos, Cold Steels, ect. Will all cut through this kinds stuff with ease. It's just soft copper wire, not diamonds. Any knife that won't cut through soft copper is not for me. Have you guys that are making a big deal out Chris cutting extension cord ever even cut anything of the like? I mean if you have you would know this stuff won't hurt a good quality knife. I mean heck, Buck used to use to demonstrate how strong their knives are by hammering their blades through a nail!!!! That is the Buck emblem that is used on their knives, a smith hammering a knife through a nail on an anvil. I mean common, its just copper wire! Geeshee!

If you think that cutting any metal or pretty much anything else gives no edge wear you are delusional, as soon as that edge cuts anything wear starts right there, sharpness starts to fall off from the 1st cut and continues on until the edge is completely dull.

I have tons of cutting data to support that FACT....

Nobody said that it can't be cut, it can, I used to cut cords of different types at work and I used it as a test medium a very long time ago.

The issue here is that someone is saying that they can make 300 cuts through 3 wire orange power cord and still shave with it.

They would have to be push cutting because there is no way possible any knife could make 300 draw cuts through that and hold an edge, I don't care what knife it is or who made it.

Even push cutting all of the cuts would have to be perfect with ZERO side loading, even then given the steel, hardness and the wear resistance it's still not really possible.

I sincerely hope that Chris Reeve has stopped reading this thread  !

If I were Chris and I had some alternate job or if I had saved up enough to retire I'd stop selling knives. It must be incredibly frustrating turning out some of the best, if not the best production knives in the world  and having this type of internet crucifixion going on by all kind of self-proclaimed experts. First it was the strength of the one-piece range, then the Sebenza lock-strength, then S30V heat treatment, now S35VN and all this insinuation that he is lying when he does respond. Then all the "experts" arguing whether cutting metal, spine-whacking, batoning and fridge-stabbing are to be considered abuse for a knife  ???

Yes you can break his knives, but only by abusing them TERRIBLY!!! If you don't like them don't buy them. Buy some sharpened pry-bar and impress each other on some other forum, but please leave him be to continue making amazing knives that I can enjoy!:)

Have you even read this thread?

Nobody is bashing CRK......

That 300 cuts could be been a type-O and should have been 30.... I will give them the benefit of the doubt on that one.

What he said, ^^^^. Just discussing & testing S35VN steel maxbelg.

Oh that doesn't matter. Fan boys don't want to see anything that isn't blatant praise.

This isn't bashing. If you think it is, you need to take a step back and look at this thread with fresh eyes.

Dear Ankerson and csiv and CTS: Unfortunately I have read the ENTIRE thread. I would have been very interested if it was just discussing & testing S35VN. This was my last post in this thread as I won't read it further.

S35VN has been the topic of the whole thread...... From the beginning.... That has been my total focus in this thread.

What knife it is or who made it has less to do with the topic than the steel.

It just happened to be 2 knives, CRK and Spyderco, but it's really the steel that matters in the end to me and as it turns out we just happen to be in the CRK forum because one of the knives just happened to be a Sebenza.

It just doesn't go any deeper than that for me because I am a steel junky 1st and foremost.

As far as the fan boy stuff goes Chris Reeve could say pigs fly and they would believe him so I don't even go there....... Ever....

Well in the end there has been positive things to come of this thread. It has gotten the attention of a few big knife manufacturers and they seem
interested in seeing why the couple knives in question performed the way they did. And they have the equipment and testing procedures to find
accurate and detailed results. So all this other he said she said stuff doesnt really matter because it looks well have an answer to our questions shortly.

Yes, they are looking into it and I know Spyderco is doing some testing for sure, CATRA and other testing.

So yes it is positive in the end.

Actually this thread could be closed at this point and they could start a new one once their testing is completed.

Oh come on.............

Being a one eyed fan boy will not help anyone. It is healthy and normal to question things when the need arises ;)
