Any survival courses in or near CT?

Brian,

I have your phone number and will call you this week. Its been busy at the high school but I have some more free time now. When were you thinking of a meet up?

Kev

Kev,

Still trying to determine the time and place, and subject matter depending on the date. If we do a winter meet, obviously the subject matter will focus on cold-weather survival, which might be a great thing, but if weather is too inclement, it might make it hard for some to get up to the meet.

Spring would certainly be easier from that standpoint, but cold-weather survival is not as often addressed.

So, what do you all lean towards?

How's it going Marcelo?

Marcelo,

how have you been lately? Yeah I am back in the knife bussiness again..

I would be interested but need to know what days and where in advance.

Would anyone mind a somewhat inexperienced skills-wise and younger (20) person (me) attending?

Anybody of any skill level -- from none to expert -- are very welcome.

Cold weather survival/camping would be cool. I've done a lot in the Presidential range and would be more than happy to give some advice/instruction to those who are less experienced. We all can learn from one another somehow.

"To teach is to learn twice", afterall.

Oh yeah, one more thing.

We should all bring stuff (Extra gear, knives/tools/etc, anything that can't be liste don Ebay/here/online) to see if other member's want to swap or sell. Kind of kill two birds with one stone. I know I have a lot that for one reason or another, I haven't posted online because I don't know how to list it. I have all sorts of bags, knives, gear that I'm sure someone would want. How about it, why don't we make this a swap meet too?

Kev

Kev, I wouldn't mind bringing some trade fodder. Honestly I'm just looking for the chance to get out and hang with some fellas. I'm following in my father's footsteps in many ways, one of which is the gradual loss of buddies to hang with due to total devotion of my time to my family. I think I need some balance here. Fall. Winter. Spring. bring it on whatever. I'm off every other weekend from now til...I just need some lead time to soften my wife up to the idea. Even if it's casual camping I'd be into it.

Kind of sounds like the rendezvous (I think thats what they called them) of the mountain man days. I up for it, as with the others dates, location and some lead time. :)

Swap? What kinda meeting do y'all think this is????!!!

What?

Oh.

Now I get it: gear swap! Ok! WHEW!

Works for me.

:D

Swap was a bad word. Other bad things to associate with this meetup/gathering:

Wine coolers
metro-sexuals
complaining
anything less than manly man or macho

Should be a good time. Brian, I left you a message on your phone. Did you get it?

Ah, swap is fine, LOL. Was kidding around. kev, got your message, will call within the next couple days. Been hectic this week!

What do y'all wanna work on?

Depending on how much snow, we can first cover the survival priorities, then apply them in practice (always a good start). we'll especially probably concentrate on heat loss/gain mechanisms, and how to recognize natural shelters, and how to build emergency shelters...hypothermia, frost bite: avoidance and treatment, and since we have some solid medics and SAR folks interested, we can have them teach emergency wilderness medicine.

Primitive and modern firestarting methods, and how the cold affects some methods.

Another important issue is what survival gear fails when it gets cold, etc., and what doesn't.

Also, I'm thinking tracking/trapping (practice only)/hunting/stalking techniques, and we can do tactical tracking/countertracking/E&E if folks are interested.

Maybe I can demonstrate some cool new techniques for mountain warfare (i.e. how to use pure snow as cover to stop rounds -- it's amazing) if we can do a little shooting in the area chosen, but since it's gun-hating CT, it probably won't be doable...

This is just a quickie brainstrom...Please, everyone, add your thoughts to this list -- even if you are totally inexperienced, let us know what you would like to learn. I'm gonna make this thread sticky to stay at the top.

I plan on attending as long as i'm home from college and would love to learn skills such as biulding small shelters from snow, reliable firestarting meathods when you are unprepared and how to aquire food (and what is edible) in the cold weather (if we do this during the winter). Please keep me informed on what is to come of this as i would love to attend.

I'd be more than happy to demonstrate snow shelters and their construction if we have enough snow. I'd also like to show how to stay really warm with some preventative measures. I could also demonstrate some winter weather lightweight hiking methods (yes, it can be done without carrying a boatload of gear.)

I'd love to do some shooting. As Brian said, CT is gun-hating but I'm sure we can get some trigger time in somewhere. Maybe the Blue Trail Range would be game if we asked them. Its central in CT and has a pretty good distance range (300 yds) for CT. If you guys want, I'll bring my Knight's SR-25 match. Shoot it if you want but buy the ammo and don't think of using anything less than premium match stuff through this baby.

We could do some cold weather shooting for sure. I know that my carry guns switch with the weather. HK USP in the winter along with Sig 228 vs. Glocks in the summer. We could discuss cold weather carry and ammo considerations for heavy clothing.

However, again I have to stress, NO WINE COOLERS!

Kev

I am primarily interested in firestarting techniques, shelter, orienteering, signaling, and water purification. I was also wondering if someone will be able to help me learn how to sharpen a convex edge with sandpaper, as I've never done this before.

Winter is fine, I guess.

Thanks to all of the experts out there willing to spend their free time to help us newbies out.

In order to plan properly and allow for others to schedule their time, I'm looking at late January/early February. We're considering locations and will give an update by next week!

Best,

~Brian.
