Anybody Get a Good Tactile Knife Co. Maverick Yet?

I can’t think of 1 of the many crossbar (axis) locks that I have handled that has had any lock play It is not normal

Most? The < $100 Kizer Drop Bear that just arrived does not do this, and it's on bearings. I don't recall any of my Benchmade or Kunwu Pulsar and Manix 2 doing this.

It wont stop me from using it, but it adds an extra level of worry I'll carry when I have it on me. I don't want to drop it, have it pop open, and then poke somebody or something that it shouldn't.
It's about the lockbar and tang geometry more than the pivot setup, as well as the overall mass of the blade itself and how that weight is distributed. Kizer's Clutch lock is not the Axis lock of the late 2000s, it's got more engineering intended to make it a better lock type that meets modern expectations in a way that the vanilla Axis and similar low-effort generic crossbar locks just do not. It's not surprising that your Drop Bear operates as you expect it to, they made sure to improve the lock design where possible and they seem to achieve a pretty consistent output compared to the historical Axis manufacturer. The crossbar type lockbar needs to allow the tang to slide it out of the way as part of the opening operation, it's what gives Axis locks their wide-suction closing bias compared to a liner or frame lock, and it's what limits the crispiness their detents can achieve.

Never tried a Kunwu but I think their OEM is Rike, who favors heavier detents in my experience, though the CBBL the Manix uses is not an Axis lock despite the similar user ergonomics and similar operating principles.

Both of my Tactile Maverick have ZERO blade play in any direction, up down left or right, with the blade anywhere between closed to fully open. There is no wiggle, pivot lash, or detent lash. And the detent feels good when flicking it open with the thumb.

However, I discovered that the detent from the bar lock is not strong enough to hold the blade closed when whipping the knife out really quickly, allowing me to flick open the blade open without touching the thumb studs or the bar lock.

All my Axis lock knives do that, my Spyderco's compression lock and backlock also, my CS Code 4 etc. Fact is, the only knives in my collection that DON'T do that are my slipjoints, my Buck 110, my ZT framelock and my Opinels(but the Op actually lock closed). But there's zero chance of a knife swinging that hard in a pocket.

Whelp, glad to say that the example I received today is perfect:

Perfect detent, no blade play in any direction, came with a shaving sharp edge, and is perfect in all details. The only issue (if it can even be called as such) is that it's not "dropshutty" like my Benchmade crossbar lock knives, though I expect it will break in a bit and get there. This is a tremendous amount of knife for the money, I can't believe how good these are.

You broke into my house and made a video using my knives?? Dang that’s pretty invasive…

Sorry for being dense, but I'm confused? You said, "I don't see any way they could open accidentally" after I'd uploaded a video of the blade slipping out and locking open if I fling the knife forward while holding it. And I replied that you could "see it if you just watch my video". You didn't state it was only your knife that you didn't think wouldn't open accidentally, you said "they" which I took to mean Mavericks in general. Maybe I read that wrong. nah.

To everyone. I'm not trying to beat up on Tactile about the lock not holding the blade in, and I love everything about it enough that I bought a second one as backup. But it should be harder to get it to deploy when not touching the bar-lock or thumb studs. Canada Customs has been a pill lately, and might label the knife as a gravity knife and refuse to admit it into the country.

I just wanted people to be aware that IF they drop the knife that there is a decent chance, at least with my 2 examples, that the blade could pop open upon landing and become a sharp projectile. I have a Sitivien ST995 that I posted about this same issue, and it's a different locking system, because I wanted people to be aware of the danger. I don't think that should be normal. I haven't noticed this issue on most of my other knives.

I usually check my new knives that they stay closed when shaking them, and that they stay open when the lock is tested. I recently found a Giantmouse Jutland that when slow rolled open would not solidly lock open if when the locker made an audible click of slipping into place, but when flicked open it would lock properly, and I posted that information so people would be aware those things can happen and to watch out for it. Giantmouse agreed and replaced the knife.

All my axis, arc, able, bbl lock knives have opened that way, and I often use that as my opening method (even with what I think is less force than in your video for some). Same for liner, frame, lockback, compression etc. Only downside is it can beat up the lock. Most all will open with a spydie drop as well. I've also had many knives open when dropped on the ground. Especially assisted openers.

Only one that has hurt me was a p'kal, and that's because of the orientation in pocket with the wave opener post. My next most dangerous knife is my minichamp, only because sometimes I'm too stupid to close it before dropping my keys back into my pocket.

It is such a good looking knife! I hope to someday own a "perfect" model too.

I guess I received a “perfect” one with no blade play at all, but the detent on mine was so incredibly weak that it will consistently open itself half way, every time I take it out of my pocket. The spring retention in the closed position is just not there. I have 30+ AXIS or cross-bar locking knives, and none of them do this (from Benchmade, Kunwu, Hogue, down to as cheap as SRM).
At the end of the day, I just could not justify keeping a knife that was going to be unsafe. I returned it. Such a disappointment because I looked everything else about it (well, except the pocket clip).

Two hours after the drop of white storm carbon fiber Tactile Maverick at Monkey Edge and they’re still in stock. Is that a bad sign?

I still think they’re great, and I may be replacing one of my two titanium models with this carbon fiber model that I bought at the start of the drop.

It might be that special fatcarbon editions dropped at multiple different dealers today.

Right, but other dealers also got a fatcarbon exclusive drop today.

For example...

There are four variants in all, according to their IG. DLT's is nice.
Oh, I see what you mean. The nebula CF isn't my thing, and the pattern on the red wasn't my favorite vs the white storm, and I have sooo many purple haze knives right now 😂

So, I may get the red one too, but I'm passing on purple haze and nebular carbon fiber. The red reminds me a little of my Shiorogorov Hati Gen 3 in red technocarbon.

EDIT - So I used $50 knifeRewards towards the red one too. Definitely passing on the others. My Protech ACTF Terzuola is my only other white storm CF knife. After I find a Shirogorov Ignis I may be done with red too 😇

EDIT 2 - also skipping black camo CF, and toxic storm, but jungle wear has caught my eye, Sigh...

I was about to say the same thing…It’s not something I try to do with my knives, but many will. I actually dropped my Hinderer Eklipse last week and it popped open (messed up my new edge in the process 😣). And that thing has a pretty heavy detent. The clip Doc posted doesn’t make it look TOO bad, like some older knives that run on washers. Blade play drives me crazy tho

Red CF is awesome! I have a “Lava Flow” PM2 and it’s beautiful, 👍 good choice

I’ve got a lot of benchmades, the only one that won’t flick open like this is a brand new 535-3 that badly needs to be cleaned and broken in. Kizer escorts and Kunwu x-Taos will open with less effort than my mavericks. TRM shadow, James brand Kline, shiro tabargan…they all do it.
