Anybody Get a Good Tactile Knife Co. Maverick Yet?

I returned a micarta one to BladeHQ last week. They wouldn't post my review. (🤣)

Wobbly stud lock and blade, dull blade, too much flex in the micarta. That micarta should not have a skeletonized frame under the scales. Honestly, I don't think Tactile has any business in the knife game if they think they can charge Spyderco prices for this sort of novice craftsmanship. Their leadership must really be out of touch with reality.

I even made a warranty claim on the blade to get them to sharpen it and fix the other issues involving play with the action. The knife came back to me with the dullest mirror finish on the edge I ever seen. I did not even know it was possible to pull that off. Not only that, they did nothing to improve the poor performance of the axis lock or the deployment of the blade. What a shame too because the knife had enough in common with my long lost 556 that I was really excited to try out a similar form factor in Magnacut.

Good riddance and thank goodness for BladeHQ's return policies. (I give them credit for that even though they are censoring negative ratings of the Mavericks) Probably didn't help that I started off getting into knives by acquiring some Spyders this year. (The Glesser's really spoil us all on QC/QA)

Sorry that my first post is a negative one but that's how it goes some times.

I have also been interested in their slipjoint but meh, not so sure anymore.
I have the Bexar and it’s good. Have the Rockwall with golf ball texture - the action was gritty out of the box and needed a good thorough cleaning and lube before it was good.

I tried one Ti Maverick - again, I love the sleek design and the overall profile of the knife. I also got a sharp blade. It was the safety factor that had me calling DLT to return the knife same-day. The spring was so weak that the blade partially opens itself almost every time I tried to take it out of my pocket. If it were an Emerson with Wave, I’d get it, but it’s not that type of knife. The “detent” strength was so weak, it could barely keep the knife closed. When I held the closed knife horizontally, blade down, the slightest jiggle would drop blade open enough to be dangerous. That’s unacceptable for a $200+ knife… heck, even a $100 knife.

I really wanted to like it, because the design spoke to me. But the execution was just not ok.

Too bad, they look so good too; hate to say it they should get in touch w Civivi or Bestech and have them make it......

There have been some complaints about Tactile recently on the knifeclub subreddit, and the owner has been chiming in to inform everyone that their warranty department has been totally reworked and the knives are better than ever. I want to believe them, but I'm waiting to see good reports from others before I jump back on board with Tactile.

So…you bought a knife from BladeHQ, sent it to the manufacturer for warranty service and ended up returning it to the retailer for a refund?

Not cool. No wonder our knives cost so much.

BladeHQ recommended the return after it was sent in and came back just as bad. So whats the problem here? Should I just accept that Tactile is selling a knife that is less than the sum of it's parts?

Somehow I doubt my one return has had any impact on you or the knife enthusiasts at large.

I've been pretty open about my poor experiences with Tactile, but I gave the Maverick another shot after finding a Jungle Wear CF model on sale during the holidays.

I definitely got a good one this time. There's zero vertical play, zero horizontal play, and zero slop between the blade and the pivot barrel. It doesn't reliably drop open and shut yet, but it's also still breaking in and IIRC Tactile uses grease in their pivots instead of oil, so I could probably change that pretty easily. Whatever changes they made to the pivot sizing and/or lock geometry have worked wonders, so the knife is exactly what I'd expect of a $300+ US-made folder. The build date on mine shows 7/7/23.

On a side note, this experience strengthens my argument that this knife was designed around composite handle scales. I found the titanium model to be heavy and unbalanced, while this CF model is delightful.

I have 2 Ti and 3 fat carbon ones, and all work great.

But I can get them to open with a vigorous shake of my arm, using inertia to get the blade past the detent; but after 2-3 tries my elbow will be killing me. So it's not like it's too easy, but the blade can pop open if you drop one on the wood floor (trust me on that).

I bought this one a couple months ago before I knew about this thread. I have to say that this one doesn’t seem to have the issues of the earlier batch. Everything is solid as it should be, although I haven’t tried to do a wrist or arm flick to open it. It was very sharp out of the box.
I also have an early Bexar that is another story. That one feels like they lubricated the pivot with beach sand and molasses!

Someone from Tactile messaged me and asked me to stop by their booth at the convention this summer. I'm more than willing to give them another shot if what I get shown is more refined and in line with the price point.

Glad you got a good one!

I just got my green G-10 which has a born on date of 9/7/23, and it’s perfect. It opens silky smooth and drops shut out of the box. lockup is solid.
