Anybody miss Vampire Gerbil posting here?

OK, my wife says that we can send it, I only have to make certain that our files are cleared from the hard drive first. Has anyone ever done this in Windows? Please let me know how to go about it.

If you have the install disk, the easiest way is to reformat the drive, and reinstall.

mschwoeb is right, and if you have any problems with the hard drive let me know. I have a spare 80 GB I would be more than happy to send to you, as well as a network card if it's needed. Now I wish I'd clicked on this thread earlier, it would be great to see VG posting again.

It looks lke we have all of the makings of a comptuer.
I've just sent up the Bat Signal to Collucci to take a look in here and help coordinate to make sure we have everything we need.

I'm assuming that Fuller's is the most complete computer and that once he clears off his files that puter is ready to be shipped. I think Gus' 19" monitor will be a nice additon, I'm guessing even VG will know how to plug that in. What about Roadrunner's 80GB and the network card, do we need that? Who is going to put that in?

I really don't know enough about pc's to know what else needs to be coordinated here.

Collucci, VideoJoe...you other byte-heads get in here and take control. ;)

phil if I can help let me know... I agree and think it would be good for him to get back here... As you said about Isp- I don't think it would be hard to get twelve guys to cover a month each- I'd be in I'd love to help more than I have- if he was local it'd be even more different... We miss ya ya big rodent! God Bless-paul

edited to add "each"

I have placed a telephone call to V-G to let him know what is going on and to ask him how he wishes to go about it. I'll be back online when i have heard from him.

That PC will need to be completely checked out before it can be shipped for compatibilty issue. I'm very leary of Frankenstein'd systems and the only way to insure that it won't crap out on him is to run some checks on it to make sure it is stable. It would be very disappointing for it to get to him and it doesn't work. Another idea is this...........

Dell has refurb systems for less than $300. I would have to look and see what will work for him. I am willing to throw in a few bucks to get him a working stable system. At least this way we know the PC will work. I can order it and have it shipped to me for inspection and some minor hardware and software upgrades if need be.

Ken, you can dissregard my last PM, I see you have jumped in here and we do need your help. Or I should say I do.

So it sounds to me like we're back to square one or can we still put something together do get VG up and running? I do agree that we've got to get VG something that works because I don't think we can expect him to be able to fix or install anything. VG and I are both Mac users and not used to any of this stuff.

So I leave it up to you pc experts.
What do we need to do?

how much is a CHEAP MAC? is that out of the question...
How about this? The Mini-Mac. Base price of $499. Of course it has no monitor or keyboard and mouse.

or this?

That's a bit much for my wallet though.

So, what are we saying, that our older Dell is of no use here? I have been using it recently and my daughter and my wife before that, but it is still working fine. It is just not as fast as the newer Pentium chip models.

If someone wants to set it up I'd give up to fifty towards a computer for him.... Its a bit slow here to do much more at this time.... or I could dig up another knife to put toward it.... so we'd only need 5-6 more guys
does anyone know if his monitor ,mouse and keyboard is workin?

is there anyone close that could set fullerH's computer up? I bet if not we could get someone from a church or local college out there to help...

What I'm saying is that you need give us a few more details as to what is in the PC. Processor? MB of RAM? MB on the Hard drive? Operating system? Once I have that info I can determine if some parts need to be upgraded.

OK, I'll try to put that together and post it w/in the next day or so.
Sounds good. If everything checks out and if some upgrades need to be done then you can ship it to me and I'll make sure it gets the once over.

I actually talked to VG about the mini-Mac, he's got a 19" monitor coming from Gus and the keyboard from his old Mac. To be perfectly honest with you if I had the $499 I would buy it for him, but I don't. Between the move to Texas, taxes, and new car and everything else I don't know how much I could even kick in. I was hoping not to take up another colection, but just find somebody with a working computer or laptop to get to VG to get him back online. I miss him and he needs to be on here. Hell, if he was online right now he could give us an idea of what he needs or wants.

I don't know nothing about pc's, but if Fuller's computer works and is ready to be shipped let's get it to VG. I'll be glad to kick in for shipping charges. If we can then put together somethinig else after that all well and good, but at least VG will be a part of the conversation.

What do you think?

If FullerH's machine is too old, it might have trouble surfing the web. If it's pre pentium, it won't take any of the current operating systems and driver support will be hard to find if you don't have the original discs.

ssbloods setup would be ideal if it's still available. It looks like all he needs is a CDRom, a case, and a hard drive - three things I have take-off parts of in abundance right now. The only thing I don't have laying around would be motherboards and RAM. I had a few used but had a rash of rush repairs and ended up using them. I also have a few OEM Windows 2000 licenses left that I'll likely never use, I'll be glad to put that on a system.

I'll also be glad to wipe and burn-in an existing system if someone wants to send it to me. I use a utility that will write hash to a hard drive so your info can't be recovered (a format won't do it. I have made a few bucks recovering data from formatted hard drive. Either way, I'll cover shipping from me to VG.

Obviously a new computer would be great, and if someone can afford it that'd be awesome. I'm in the middle of a seemingly endless cash crisis and have wanted to do something to help VG since the tragedy started last fall, but have been unable to toss into the hat when it went around. I have a business building and maintaining computers, so if I can contribute something with labor - something I have a limitless supply of - and parts I already have; I'd be thrilled.

Any capacity I can chip in on, just let me know. I'm reluctant to post my phone number in an open forum, but I will give an email address I check constantly: jallen At digitalriverproduction D O T com. Drop me a line and I'll reply with my cell phone number.

Joe,

Let us know what parts you need eg: RAM, video card, ethernet card, etc. and maybe some of us can chip in and get the parts to you for you to build the rest of this PC.

Whatever you guys decide to do let me know and I will be more than glad to chip in. I am also going to check at work and see if maybe we have something there that can be used.
