Anybody miss Vampire Gerbil posting here?

Phil,

I know for a fact that he uses AOL. Once I procure a CPU I too will call him and see if it will fit his needs. I am pretty sure that he has a monitor and I think the only problem on his end is the CPU. From what I have been told by Alisah and a lot of guessing on my part it sounds like either the hard drive or motherboard crashed.

What ISP is a great place to start. If it's dial up service or dsl will help as we'll need to determine if he needs a PPPOE client installed, AOL 26.9 Optomized, etc installed? Is dave in good enough shape that he can take care of configuring the box once it arrives?

John, I'm in perfect health and I don't have a clue what, "configuring the box" means. So, I'm going to guess that No he's not in good enough shape.

Okay, I just got off the phone with VG, I woke him up as a matter of fact.
Tim was right he's on AOL 3.0 on a wireless DSL connection.
He didn't have any more idea than I did about what configuring a box means.

I got a feeling you PC guys are just messing with us Mac folks, makeing up terms and stuff just to try and be cute. :p

I was referring to network settings, firewall issues and that sort of stuff. Wireless DSL eh? Does it use an external wireless modem or is it a PCI card? If an external modem, does it connect via ethernet or USB?

Does he have his user name and password somewhere?

John

John, email me and I'll be glad to give you VG's phone number and you can ask him all of the questions you want.

All I know is if I ever get sick and computer-less, please please please don't send me a mac. I'd rather pound out letters with a nail and stone tablet.

Please don't worry your empty blonde head about it cause nobody is sending you nothing not even a get well card. :p

Well, research done and the computer that I have to spare has an 8088 chip. It is an antique by now. I am glad that others have come forward. But mine is still available if necessary.

Ok I have a few nails and I'll cover shipping for them.... anybody have some stone tablets ... and I think she forgot a hammer to pound with... this should be an easy one... :D

Here is the update as of 5 minutes ago. All the CPU's that have been set aside are not worth it. 99% of the computers here do not have CD Roms in them (IT does not want anyone loading their own software). There are a few that are due for immediate replacement and I have been told that one of those will work for what I requested. It may be a few days yet and I have expressed the urgency of this. I still think that the couple day wait will be worth it and there are also a couple of guys who live in Pahrump and work here. It will not be a problem to have one of them deliver it to VG. Last resort, I believe that Alisha and Dave come to town about once a week for DR appointments. I will keep you people advised.
Tim

I printed up and sent VG this thread, it went out on Monday, so he's probably received it by now.

Is there anything new to tell him if he calls?

Just curious.

Alright, let's get this thing going, folks! It looks like too much of a hassle to collect the parts and put something together.

Let's all chip in TODAY and get him a Dell. I'm in for $50 if others will match it.

This one with a wireless adapter is $428 shipped. Not a screamer, but certainly enough to surf and email. Gus can send him his 19" monitor. Could you put something together yourself that's better for the price? Yes, but this effort seems to be going nowhere. Let's just get it done now!

I still think getting him the mini-Mac for $499 is the way to go since he uses Macs. He has the keyboard and mouse and Gus is getting a monitor to him.

I can't add much but I can give $50.

I agree with the mini mac idea, but either way, count me in for $50.

PC, Mac, whatever. Let's just get this done. Thanks, Kevin. Who else will step up to the plate?

I think the Mini-Mac is the way to go infact when I sent VG the thread printout I also sent him the pages from Apple's site on the Mini-Mac.

As much as I hate to admit it I don't have the money to kickin right now. I know VG will understand. :(

That's OK, Phil. You'll be the one collecting the cash and buying the system. :p
