Anybody miss Vampire Gerbil posting here?

If FullerH's PC isnt up to snuff I have an older Dell that I would gladly send VG, the only issue is that shipping from Canada would be a killer for everything (that monitor weights a ton) and to be honest I doubt the monitor would survive the trip anyhow.

The PC is a Dell GX110 PIII/733, 256mb of ram, 10 gb drive, built in NIC, Audio and Video Card. Nothing fancy but it would be great for getting online.

I would gladly rebuild it and reinstall Windows 2000 on it with all the latest security patches, Antivirus and all that, so it would be ready to go once it arrives.

What it would need would be a monitor, keyboard and mouse. (Uses PS2 keyboard and mouse).

Anyhow, if this option interests people and you want to help with the shipping I would be glad to help out VG.

Please send me a PM if you want me to go ahead with things.

Thanks

I have a pile of hard drives I need to go through to see if any are usable, other than that the only thing I would need would be either a slot 1 or socket A mother board. I have some 1 Ghz PIIIs and some 1.4 Ghz Athlons that with the corresponding RAM that would work well for him. Oh and a modem. Haven't used one of those for a while, so I probably don't have any. I can grab one local for $5 or 10 so that's not an issue.

Here's what I could put together given parts on hand:

1Ghz PIII or 1.4 GHz Athlon (depending on what Mobo I can come up with)
256MB RAM
Hard drive 20 to 80 GB depending on what I have
Appian Dual monitor card
Sound card
10/100 Ethernet
New case
Used Power supply
CDRom, or I might have a burner around here somewhere.
Windows 2000
Bladeforums pre-bookmarked.

If anybody would have newer or better components they could chip in, that would be cool too, but I could make it happen if I can come up with a motherboard. If the motherboard had onboard video and or sound, it would probably be more contemporary than what I have laying around, but they will get the job done if not.

Joe

Joe, I might have a Socket A mobo. I'll look around and get back to you later today or tomorrow.

Joe,

What Form Factor of motherboard would be ideal for the parts you have?

I was wrong on the mobo, seems I went and threw it out when I moved. :( The HD and ethernet card are still available if and when you need them, just drop me an e-mail.

Wow!
You guys are still talking in English right?
So what are we missing a Mobo?
Geeeeez, I wonder if I even have a Mobo, maybe I need one two? ;)

Update: Don't send anything yet. I am checking at work and may have something here that can be of use to VG. Since I am here in Las Vegas this would be an easy fix. As soon as I get an answer I will post it. I am hoping for a resolution within a couple of hours.

Nope, you've now ventured into geek-land. We all speak 1337. :p

It's still here. I've had it for a few months. Kid next door was gonna throw the thing over the railing and trash it in the dorms. His harddrive's boot sector went bad so he figured he should destroy everything :footinmou

Tim, you are the man, you may be the best thing that ever happened to a family of gerbils .

Unfortunately I have not gotten a resolution to this yet and it is about the end of the business day on Friday. I do know that there are a bunch of CPU's here that almost went out on re-sale so I am sure that I will find something. I will get on this first thing Monday morning and get an answer.

I don't know if this helps or not, but I have a PIII 600 based box with 256mb of memory, an ASUS P2b Mobo, a WD 8.4 gb HDD, CD Rom drive and all the other necessary parts. It's a working Win ME box that currently connects to the net via my home network/cable modem connection. It's my shop machine and I've determined that I no longer want a computer in my shop. It currently has a 10/100 nic installed, but I could easily add in a 56K modem. I'd also add in a n old and slow, but still working TDK CDRW drive that I have (only 8X).While the machine is stable as it sits, it is Win ME. I'd gladly rebuild it with Win2K if the above offer for a Win2K license is still open to improve stability.

This is a done deal type solution as the machine is in place and running currently. I'll even pick up the shipping and will configure the machine for DSL or dial up access depending upon what is needed as long as someone can give me specifics.

It ain't fast, but it works for surfing.

I'll call VG tomorrow and give him a heads up and ask what kind of connection he has. I'll bet he's going to be excited.

I'm also going to print up this thread and send it to him so he can how much we all want to see back here.

You guys are awesome!
This is just amasing that it went from 'what can we scrimp to come up with" to "what unit will best work with what connection V.G. has." Really just fantastic and my hats off to you for stepping up and helping out.

Half of what has been posted is in "geek-ese" to me. ;) My eyes started to glase over...mmmm donuts.
I think I'll just pass on some $ to help with aol or whatever connection he has.

Let's get him back into our world...it's too sane here without him.

jmxcpter,

Drop me an email with your meatspace address and I'll get a Win2K disc in the mail to you.

Joe

I don't know if this is covered or not, but do we know which browser Dave used? Probably IE, I know, but better safe than sorry, we wouldn't want him to be uncomfortable with a different browser.

Okay, I will call VG later today, but What Questions Do I Need To Ask Him?

What kind of connection? Dial-up, DSL, Cable...
What Browser was he using or feel most comfortable with? AOL, Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari, ....
Will his ISP matter at all?

What else?
