Chris Reeve used Devin Thomas Damascus for many years. S30V was an early inspiration for me in learning metallurgy. I bought my first Sebenza in 2004. I see a lot of connections between MagnaCut, Chris Reeve Knives, and S30V/S35VN.

I really like my Magnacut knives, outstanding performance and easy to sharpen. I haven’t had the edge chip or roll under heavy use and it seems to stay sharp about like s35vn.

Ugh so over it being on EVERY damn knife.

Companies’ charging more for it like it so spesh when it doesn’t even hold an edge like S45.

Even bloody CRK, who should only be allowed to use steels that Chris had a hand in designing, are using magnacut.

Made the knife landscape so damn bland (in addition to every knife being a made in China ti flipper meow). I want variety dammit.

Well, Alabama had no use for Neil Young in its Sweet Home either, but there you go...

The average casual knife Knut needs variety for some reason. You could hand them the greatest knife steel in the world and they would long for something else, as if their satisfaction lay in the belief that by being part of a decision they increased the performance of the knife.

I don’t currently have anything in Magnacut, but I’d be proud to. From what I’ve heard, it’s a fantastic product. From what I’ve read, it’s a fantastic product.

Although I haven't used MagnaCut, I do see it as a really good new steel. However, people are missing its true advantages.

At 61 Rc, MagnaCut gets 505 TCC in Catra wear resistance and rates at 17 ft-lbs of toughness (resistance to chipping and breaking). That's not a ton wear resistance, but good. It's about the same as D2 at that hardness, and less than 4V (525 TCC), Vanax (545 TCC) and S30V (550 TCC).

The advantage, at 61 Rc, is in toughness -- 17 ft-lbs. By comparison, D2 at that hardness is about 5 ft-lbs. A2 is about 13 ft-lbs. M4 is about 14 or 15. Vanax at 60 Rc (61 is a stretch for Vanax) is 12 ft-lbs. S35Vn is 10 ft-lbs. AEB-L is about 32 ft-lbs (but only 355 TCC).

So at 61 Rc, MagnaCut has decent wear resistance and a lot of toughness. It owns this hardness category.

But take that hardness up to 64 Rc, like Chris Reeve, and the story changes. The wear resistance goes up a bit to 550 TCC and the toughness falls to 12 ft-lbs. That makes MagnaCut and Vanax almost identical in toughness and wear resistance. And Vanax is finer grained and more stain resistant -- although by very small amounts.

Cruwear at 62 Rc gets 525 TCC -- almost as much as MagnaCut at 64 -- but a lot more toughness: 12 ft-lbs vs 22.5 ft-lbs.

Doubt it, Tim just follows the trends now…

That’s confusing. They introduced a glass blast finish a couple years ago. Switched to magnacut in their main line of folders… not many significant changes or trends being followed that I can see.

Where’s the flipper? Where’s the button lock? Where’s the internal milling? Why no crossbar lock options?? Assisted open? Auto?

More I think about it, CRKs is the least trendy folder company I can think of…

Maybe the masses need to get a hold of it and use it, then it will shine, but right now it seems to be so high that it’s strengths have not been experienced by the middle class of knife users…..meaning like me. ;) So maybe the high cost and constant hearing how good it is left a negative impression (…another super steel kind of thing ), whether earned or not. I guess we should keep an open mind, until more people can use it and experience it. Until that happens, however, there are still a range of good steels to meet your needs, that will do just fine.

I’m not sick of MC…..yet 😉 and enjoy seeing it more readily available. My experience is that it’s fairly easy to touch up, stays sharp well and is extremely corrosion resistant. My MC Deka has replaced my H1 Tasman Salt for beach carry.

Only thing I’m sick of is people bickering about 1-2 hrc. Earlier a guy said 63-64 was too hard, most people want it that hardness, I’m indifferent. My deka is 60-62, Hogue has since upped the hrc to 62-64. Maybe it’s an improvement or maybe it was a response to all the people complaining about it being “too soft”. I’m happy regardless.

MagnaCut is actually "finer grain" than Vanax.

A high volume of chromium carbonitrides like in Vanax is not as fine as the vanadium and niobium carbonitrides in MagnaCut with all the chromium dissolved rather than leftover as the larger undissolved, hard phase particles like in Vanax which can agglomerate in some areas.

Go figure.

Looks like innovation with balanced chemistry design beats out exotic diffusion alloying with nitriding powder before HIP when it comes to "finer grain" (carbide size reduction)

I have several knives in Magnacut. I like the edges I get with it. They have a specific feel to them, possibly due to the finer carbide size? Don't know, but it's distictly different from a 20CV blade. And the steel performs well.

However, at the end of the day, while Magnacut gives really good performance, I'm usually more interesed in the blade shape and handle ergonmomics than in the exact blade alloy.

So, no. I'm not bored with Magnacut.

Much finer structure at the edge with MagnaCut than with 20CV.

Spyderco Factory edges with high magnification.

You can see the larger chromium carbides bristling at the edge with 20CV.

The MagnaCut edge was crisper and keener but less aggressive.

So, every knife is made in China and every knife has MagnaCut. But the only Chinese Magnacut blades at KnifeCenter are Bestech and Giant Mouse.
