"Buy what you like", well, sort of... Seems like EVERY new release is damn magnacut, so not many options if you want a new knife. And because it's the latest fad, manufacturers are charging a big premium for it.
I think the biggest gripe is that they aren't offering a "regular" steel option on most new designs. I'd much rather have CPM-154 for 30%+ less.

I have several knives in Magnacut. I like the edges I get with it. They have a specific feel to them, possibly due to the finer carbide size? Don't know, but it's distictly different from a 20CV blade. And the steel performs well.

Much finer structure at the edge with MagnaCut than with 20CV.

You can see the larger chromium carbides bristling at the edge with 20CV.

The MagnaCut edge was crisper and keener but less aggressive.

Thanks for those. That explains the difference in the edge "feel" that I was sensing, but could not prove.

Depending on what one is cutting, that finer, "crisper" edge is sometimes more useful than the the more aggressive longer lasting coarser edge, much as some folks prefer the edges they get on carbon steel to those they get with high carbide stainless. But Magnacut provides the option of a fine edge combined with good wear resistance, which is a very nice combination of properties to have.
 
Buy whatever you like. If enough people won't buy MagnaCut - companies will use it less.

Everyone is hyped about MagnaCut and yet I'm here still impressed by my CPM-3V knife.

Also, I got a S390 custom not too long ago, and I'm super impressed by it (gotta make that thread later today).

All in all, I'm not a fan of stainless steels (unless it's a folder) and I'm not that excited about MagnaCut either.
 
Why can’t we just like multiple steels? I don’t think anyone pitched MagnaCut as ‘the’ steel to replace all others, but rather a great steel for many applications offering more choices.
When I snowmachine to my remote cabin next week a MagnaCut blade will be on my bib suspenders as I will be busy cutting blown down trees in deep snow, and it will
be wet/snow covered for quite a few hours. I will also have an AEB-L neck knife, D3v SDFK and 80CRv2 Skrama 240 in my gear bag, and Endura 4 vg10 in each front pocket. I am not a steel snob, I like what I like.

Inadvertently, Mikey was hit with some serious reverse psychology and he liked it. Life cereal can still be found on the shelves!

And no, you can't eat cereal with a knife made with Magnacut. 55 years from now, and after-Magnacut will be around...
 
As someone who still doesn't own anything with magnacut, I love it when anyone says they're sick and tired of it. Good. Let people get sick and tired of it. Let the hype die down. Let the market get over saturated with it so I can buy it cheaper whenever I eventually decide to finally go for it. I want all the knife makers to shove magnacut down everyone's throat.
 
I'm a massive fan of magnacut for work. I know I've said that before, too. And I'll keep saying it! When you work with water so nasty it'll rust stainless and magnacut doesn't get a spot on it for days, I'm going to say go with magnacut every time. But when I'm looking at customs or things to carry on days off I don't really pay attention tbh. A nice knife is just that. Nice. Handle materials, blade shape, action, etc matter far more than metal.

fact is that hardly anyone here could tell you what steel a knife was made of unless it was stamped on the blade.
Everyone in Westeros knew immediately what Valyrian steel was the moment they slid a sword mere inches from a sheath!

So, it's possible that someone could Identify a steel just by looking at it!

I wonder if Larrin is from there?
