Anyone have the MKC Montana yet?

Toughness can play a significant role in edge retention, especially regarding the blade geometry.

It wasn't used in terms of how much abuse the whole knife and/or mechanism could endure in the hands of the user.
 
MKC's core brand proposition is smart. They are all in with the hunting industry, which likely dwarfs the knife biz. MKC knows their target market, and I don't think it's nerdy knife nuts like us.

I went on a hunting trip last fall and a few people in the group were talking about how their next knife purchase was going to be a MKC. I'd never heard of the brand before, so I looked them up. I don't see the draw, but they must have really good marketing.

For their prices, I can think of a lot of other brands I'd rather use.

MKC partnered up with the MeatEater crew and advertise in a lot of their media. I think Steve Rinella even collaborated on a model or two. This is not new, MeatEater has been using and advertising Benchmade and Case knives for years. At the very least, they appear to actually use their knives for the purpose they were intended so I could not imagine a better marketing strategy
 
I live in Montana and actively avoided the brand due to being pushed by Meateater and being the new trendy fad to go with your $500 Sitka jacket. I did eventually buy a used fixed blade of theirs and I have to say, it is a really nice knife. I think one thing they are doing right (aside from advertising) is grinding the edges thin. Most fixed blades I get now need to be thinned out at the edge and the MKC edge was already thin and cut really well. Since then I was gifted another one of their knives and it has also had a thin, sharp edge. They aren’t worth the asking price to me but they are solid, high quality knives.

Hey, I've got a Sitka and it's the best hunting jacket I've got. Although it was a gift, and purchased on sale.

Are your knives in Magnacut or their original 52100?

Sounds like a sound marketing strategy. I'm sure their knives work well. I use a few different Benchmade knives and they aren't a cheap brand, but their offerings seem much more polished and high end for a similar price. I bought a Hidden Canyon (S90V) on sale and I use it all the time for birds. Likewise, I purchased a Fishcrafter in 7" and 9" on sale.

Sitka at MSRP is a ridiculous price. That being said, their gear is the best I've ever used when waterfowl hunting. I do a lot of waterfowl hunting in less than ideal conditions and their layering system is about perfect for cold hunts in the Northeast. I have a Duck Oven that I've worn for close to a decade and it is still in fantastic shape, despite being beat on. But I'm also a bargain shopper, so I usually wait for a big sale before buying their stuff.

1) With the sample size of one Montana, we do not have enough information to say that they are all 59 HRC. More testing would be required.

2) In the graphic above, the Montana was at 61, not 59.

3) Magnacut at 61 may sacrifice a bit of edge retention, but it will do just fine for most pocket knife jobs. I do prefer Magnacut at a higher hardness, but the choice of 61 as a target is not irrational.

None of that makes it worth the price in my opinion, but that is my perception of its value relative to similarly priced competitors. However, I would not tell MKC fans that this is a bad knife.

The majority of buyers and users do not participate on these forums. QC doesnt show up on their radar. It isnt surprising that a company would take advantage of that fact.

We are a small sample that follows the science and persues QC.

Boy howdy, I'll bet we could start slinging a LOT of mud around about which brands are just EDC Jewelry. There's a hundred of those kinda threads shut down already. I mean, everyone knows the Ozark Trail knockoff of the Bugout is the best knife since the one that sliced bread, so every other knife is just overpriced junk and you're all suckers.
