Anyone have the MKC Montana yet?

FIFY. . . All kidding around aside, I just don’t see anything whatsoever to get excited about in this knife. I’m at a total loss as to how they can justify that asking price. Just my opinion of course. . .
 
I actually like the design, it reminds of of the BK15 and my CS Talwars (with a more versatile handle, of course). There's too many drop point, sheepfoot, and "reverse tanto" folders out there nowadays so the design is a nice change to me.

I'm just not a fan of liner locks and would rather carry a fixed blade as a primary hunting knife, even if the price was lower.

Yeah as you both rightly point out it's not that the knife is bad or poorly designed. I am certainly not dissing it. But let's be realistic about a $400 folder.......You are up against some very stiff opposition. Spyderco, CRK, ZT, Spartan and many other super high quality brands. Brands that have a long history with fantastic customer service and warranties.

I am sure the Montana is a good serviceable folding knife and I am glad it is made in the USA. At a price point of around $200 it would be a very nice buy. But at it's current $400 price many questions arise about it's value.

At Blade this year I purchased a ZT 0203. M4 steel, fabulous fit and finish and a solid pedigree.........$340. Given the choice between these two I'm making the same choice again.

What is not mentioned is at 59HRC its almost certainly easier to sharpen in the field.

Maybe, but "easier to sharpen" is a good selling point for the target audience it would seem.

I honestly get both sides of the easier to sharpen/better edge retention coin. I don't think there is a wrong choice. In this case, using magnacut in a small blade I personally think the increased edge retention is a better seller. Mkc is marketing this new cutting edge steel with all these benefits, and then not getting the most out of it because of ease of sharpening? Plenty of other alloys that could have been used if you wanted ease of sharpening.

The premium that manufacturers are charging for magnacut should be paired with a proper heat treat and hardness (specifically for smaller blades) to showcase it's superiority to other alloys.

Not for nothing but I'm not 100% convinced that they even know what they are marketing.....
The link to MKC posted above has this quote -

Yet the testing results from a 3rd party tester posted on page 3 seem to contradict that.
I'd guess that the target market, ie urbanite wannabe guides and hunters with money to burn don't really know or care, they just want to have the "right knife" on their belt when they are carrying their $20k shotguns and wearing $800 Gokeys.....

Shop around a bit , you can buy the 4" PE Talwar right now for $85 . Genuine article , Cold Steel .

Not USA made or Magnacut , but also not nearly $400 .
