Anyone Here A Horror Movie Buff ?

Audition was the most shocking and disturbing movie I've ever seen, 'cause no-one warned me about the ending, and it was totally unexpected. The last time I was that blown away by a movie was when I saw "The Deer Hunter" for the first time, and wasn't expecting the Russian roulette scene. . .

John Carpenter's The Thing,
The Howling (original), and
Evil Dead (original) were all "scary" movies, and I recommend them highly.

Reanimator and Evil Dead 2 are comedies.

Dawn of the Dead (original) was an epic adventure -- much like "Road Warrior" -- only in a shopping mall -- with zombies. One of the 5 greatest movies ever made!

House of 1000 Corpses was a bit disturbing just due to the level of sadism in the script . . . hardly "scary", though, IMHO.

The Devil's Rejects and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer were not scary, but I recommend them because they deal with realistic monsters, the likes of which you or a loved one might actually meet one day. Watch them and think about how you might react if faced with those particular scenarios. Both films present an excellent case for carrying a concealed handgun on a regular basis. . .

Just looking for some really scary horror movies that will scare the caca out of me, like movies that will not let me sleep later that night. Anyone with suggestions feel free to chip in.

Andrew

The Exorcist, I saw it when I was younger, I still can't watch it.

The Omen movies.

John Carpenters The Thing.

The Mothman prophecies, More spooky than horror

Fire in the Sky, Aliens are bad, verry verrrry bad!

28 days later, Awesome!

Bio Dome, Jury Duty, In the Army Now, Son in Law, Encino Man. Five of the scariest movies ever made!

Watched the remake of "The Hills have Eyes". That was pretty gory, maybe scary to some, I just thought it was pretty sick. (The actress who plays the youngest daughter was VERY cute, though!) TBH I kinda regret spending 2 hours watching it & during the last hour I sat there wondering who these movies are made for. I MUST be getting old!

"Halloween" ALWAYS scares the £%&* out of me! And "The Descent" was pretty hard-core, too.

I find the scary chick who comes out of your telly in "Ring" pretty frightening, too! Saw the remake of "The Grudge" & the gal in that is pretty creepy too, especially the noise she makes (sort of a slow "burping/gurgling" sound!)

Horror is a tough genre. It seems that most modern "horror" films are merely boring slasher flicks tageted at eleven-year-olds. Still, there's a good one once in a while.

The remake of Dawn of the Dead is one of the best horror films of all time. The first 30 minutes and the last 30 minutes were absolutely terrifying, and the in-between is some of the best horror footage ever. The original is good too, as are the other George Romero originals, especially the first, The Night of the Living Dead.

28 Days Later was very good too.

The Grudge and The Ring were OK, with a couple of suspenseful scenes.

For mysterious haunting films, The Others was very well made. Another is a classic film, Carnival of Souls, eerie and unlike any other film.

Mary Shelly's Frankenstein is a good one. Of the dozens of Frankenstein movies made, it's the only one that cared enough to get the story and the atmosphere right.

Never heard of that one. I'll have to add it to my Netflix que.

Absolutely! I saw it in the theatre, alone, at night, in an empty theatre. When the credits ran I was halfway to the door when the rest came on. You DID stay through the credits, didn't you?

Get the DVD if you haven't already. Lots of great "special features".

I saw it at a nearly-abandoned theatre too, budget-priced afternoon show after it had been out a few weeks. I was completely sucked into the film within the first few minutes due to the rapidly increasing story pace, intense intro, and WOW factor.

I did start to leave during the credits but sat back down when the "home movie" started. I've also rented the DVD to watch with Wife. Lots of cool stuff.

What the new Dawn... film offered that the newest Land of the Dead lacked was shock factor. "OH My God! I Can't Believe They Showed That!" was an important part of the first three Romero films. Land... just didn't have it. After 10,000 identically boring but increasingly graphic slasher films, it's probably very difficult to shock American audiences, but the Dawn... remake pulled it off nicely (or grossly).

True statement. I quit eating my popcorn and just sat there with my mouth open. My ass had a death-grip on the seat cushion.

Another true statement. When you sit there and say to yourself, "No.. they're not gunna.... OH! They DID!" That's one of the things I liked about it. They crossed some lines. IMHO, they pushed the line over a bit, permenantly. I think you can see evidence of that in movies like SAW, SAW2, Wolf Creek, Hostle & The Hills Have Eyes, where they almost feel obligated to push that limit now, regardless of neccessity within the story line.

The DOTD remake MAY be one of those movies that has some effect on every horror movie that comes after it for a decade or so... like "Poltergeist" did. Time will tell.

On a different note...

Rent a movie called "Mr. Vampire" (1985). You'll probably need Netflix or a really thorough movie rental place. Sort of a asian horror/comedy. Funny as heck. Strangest (in a good way) movie you've ever seen. I guarantee it.

If you like that kind of stuff: "Bio Zombie" (1998) It's subtitled AND dubbed over in english by someone who doesn't speak very good english, the words don't match the subtitles, and together it makes for one pretty freakin' funny horror flick.

.

ROFL I'm not the only crazy one! I got the whole Mr Vampire I, 2, & 3 and "The New Mr Vampire" series, plus all 3 Chinese Ghost Story flicks. I'm a sucker for that sort of stuff. Also fond of J horror like Ringu, Tomie, Sky High, Shadow of the Wraith, One Missed Call, Dark Water (not the US version), Premonition, Inugami... Ichi the Killer was a bit spooky too but more of a gore-fest. Korean films like The Eye, Memento Mori and Tale of Two Sisters are good too.

I tend to like films that are eerie and a bit disturbing rather than ones that jump out at you and go "Boo", so for American films I like the Hellraiser series, Videodrome, the first Alien movie, Resident Evil, Eraser Head, Lifeforce, and things like that.

I also like the old British Quatermas films Children of the Damned and Shawn of the Dead (who would think you could turn night of the living dead into a comedy ^0^)

The Believers with Martin Sheen about Santeria scared the living crap out of me.

Nightmares about The Exorcist for weeks.

Jacobs Ladder also very scary

I absolutely love horror movies. I remember my mom bringing back for me loads of horror movies like The Beyond and Zombie Flesheaters when i was like 7 years old. Maybe even younger. She didn't mind me watching violent movies but no boobies.

Until now i love horror movies but have been dissatisfied with some of the new ones. I was a bit disappointed with Land of the Dead. It was released in the UK on the day my first child was born. I actually left my wife at the hospital to watch it. :D Serves me right. It wasn't that great of a movie. OK but not on par with either Dawn of the Dead.

In the last few years the films i've enjoyed are the remake to dawn of the dead and the descent. Even dog soldiers was good but not really scary. I liked House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects. Probably because of Sheri Moon Zombie. There's just something about her in those movies.

My favourites are still the oldies:

- John Carpenter's The Thing : Great special effects and great atmosphere. You could feel the cold and the claustrophobia.

-The Exorcist : There's something about little kid ghosts or monsters that scare me. That little kid at the beginning of the Dawn remake also scares me.

-Halloween

- Zombie Flesh Eaters and The Beyond : Bloody cool soundtrack too!

- Dellamorte Dellamore : This was just so cool. Had a good looking girl in it as well as weird zombie scouts.

There are loads of other good horror movies but i'm in the office and can't think of them right now.

They had a few humorous moments, but neither are comedies and they do not deserve to be so blithely dismissed. Both had their share of truly horrific scenes, and on top of that they were both highly entertaining movies. Worth a viewing by all except horror snobs.

OHMYGOD! I forgot about "The Believers"!
THAT was a creepy film, my girlfriend is terrified of spiders, and we watched the movie on video (days before DVD!) one night, well, you know whats coming next, when those spiders came out of the sore on his girlfriends cheek, My gal drew blood on my arm coz she squeezed that hard & dug her nails in!! LOL

I gotta agree about Asia Argento, too, what a "scorcher"! The only thing that's off putting is, if you do a pic search of her on google, what a huge bush! LOL Perhaps Ive spent too long knocking-about with "playboys", "hollywoods & "brazilians"

Strange how different zombie movies are when they take place where there are no guns, huh?

Reanimator and Evil Dead 2 are comedies . . . in a sick and twisted sorta way . . . and were clearly intended as such.

I did not intend that my post be interpreted as a "blithe dismissal" of these fine films, as I enjoyed them both and recommend them highly.

For another example of the "horror/comedy" genre, check out Blood Diner or one of the films in the Return of the Living Dead trilogy.

As long as we're on the subject, did anyone ever watch "Monstervision" on Saturday nights on the USA Network? Billy Joe Bob Briggs would sit on a set that was made up of lawnchair in front of a trailer and he would make fun the campy horror movie they were playing during the breaks along with behind-the-scenes trivia, etc. That dude knew EVERYTHING about "B" horror. He wasn't just reading the cards either - he really knew all that stuff. I miss that show.

.

You guys have named some pretty interesting sounding ones. I was somewhat broad when I asked for scary movies, so maybe this might help you lean me towards my preferences. I'm more into the realistic phychological thriller type kinds of movies, both the supernatural type as well as the plausible slasher movies, though a movie that's a blend of both would be nice. I think the first two Hellraisers I saw are the only two to date in that category, dark, bloody and got that supernatural element to them. Oh yeah, and something with convincing yet real effects. Hard to find that though, since CGI and green screen are the new thing.

Oh yeah, and it seems that alot of horror movies are fairly predictable. I want to see a movie and get caught totally of guard. You know, see a movie and be left going, "Wow, I never would have guessed !" You know something like that. Hope that gives you all an idea of what scares me.
