Anyone Here A Horror Movie Buff ?

OK, I will admit that the latest remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre (with Jessica Biel) got to me a little.

Thanks to this thread, I saw that one last night, and I found this scene particularly disturbing: Erin seeing Leatherface face to face, well sort of. He looked like the bloated expressionless version of her killed boyfriend, as he made a mask from the skin (and facial features) on his head. I found myself going back after the movie to that scene, "did I really see that?". Man, that was just a little haunting, like the b&w snuff loop in "8mm" with Nicholas Cage.
Otherwise, the predictability of Erin's prolonged struggle (her friends die relatively easy, yet she goes on from confrontation to confrontation) made the movie weaker. Allegedly, the movie was loosely based on serial killer Ed Gein, and I thought although flawed, it's still far better than the laughable transvestite serial killer composite in Silence of the Lambs, although he was probably more realistic.

P.S. I loved the little Jedidiah, reminded me of the mutant kid on the bridge from "Deliverance". :D
P.P.S. I also found out in the reviews that a hitchhiker in the original TCM has some sort of wicked knife. Anybody know more? I think I'll check it out, for that reason among others.

I'm more into the realistic phychological thriller type kinds of movies, both the supernatural type as well as the plausible slasher movies, though a movie that's a blend of both would be nice.

"May"

Disturbing movie.

It's been a few years, but I remember it being some kind of crude, home-made looking folder, or maybe even a straight razor. Definitely not a name brand blade, but the thing is skeevy because it looks dirty, crudely made and entirely too well-used.

The hitchhiker was a very disturbing character, and all too believable. The original TCM beats out the remake by a mile IMHO.

I just saw the TCM remake too, last night. I think the most disturbing thing about it was the crazy cop. Generally, not a bad horror flick. I think you gave it a fair review, AmadeusM.

I believe the hitchhiker in the original TCM had a folding razor.

Based on you all's opinions, I rented the The first two "Hellraisers", The original TCM, and "IT" (heard there was a clown in it.) All I have to say is..........

AAAAAHHHHH

Holy underwear ! Those movies scared the crap out of me. I swear after seeing TCM I'm never driving on a backroad EVER ! Geez, I can't believe that actually happened ! And in the same state I live in ! Something about that movie that's just so, sickening and exausting ! I'm still shaken up by watching it, hehe ! Thanks for the recommendations guys ! Gonna pick up another five movies this weekend !

IIRC that was R. Lee Ermey. Rent "Full Metal Jacket." He should have won an academy award for his protrayal of the DI.

As Amadeus said, it was loosely based on the case of serial killer Ed Gein. That's a movie to rent - "Ed Gein" with Steve Railsback as Ed. He was dynamic as another psycho - Charles Mansion - in "Helter Skelter."

Truth can be stranger than fiction.

"Bio Zombie" (1998) It's subtitled AND dubbed over in english by someone who doesn't speak very good english, the words don't match the subtitles, and together it makes for one pretty freakin' funny horror flick.

Bio Zombie is hilarious. A very underrated film. Much darker actually then I expected. You know - I mean for what was basically a Chinese comedy.

My favorite horror movie is John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) - you really have to see it if you haven't. John Carpenter has accomplished nothing, in my opinion except for that movie. A real masterpiece with great effects for its time.

As far as modern movies - I liked the Dawn of the Dead remake because it actually made me think while watching the movie - what would I do here and there - and so forth. To me, it was very absorbing and kept me glued throughout.

Another good one. I think that one crosses some lines at the time too...
When that head grew eyes and legs and ran under the desk and those guys said, "You gotta be f'in kidding me...", we were thinking the same thing!

Anybody going to see Slither the end of this month? Looks like a disgusting version of Evolution, not really scary but billed as a horror movie.

Probably. I have a "horror buddy". Nearly every friday night we have dinner at Chili's or Old Chicago, a bunch of beer and/or Margaritas, and then go see a horror movie. Great way to end a week.

What do you all think of the "Nightmare On Elm Street" movies ? They've always been big time hits with me, well the first three at least, and the "New Nightmare" Flick. The rest were kind of cheesy. I saw Nightmare 2 the other night, had to be the most frightening one of the series !

I have a warm spot for those because I sort of went through Highschool with them. They were "date" movies for me. I have the box set. Come to think of it, my current girlfriend (of 12 years now) bought me that box set. Ironic.

I was at a science fiction convention when they were hyping Motel Hell back in 1980. I got photo's of Nina Axelrod and Rory Calhoun, plus Nina's autograph.

wicked!
just the thought of bodies buried up to their necks with slashed throats and burlap bags over their heads lined up like cabbage in a garden...just waiting for the meat processor...man, now that's some shite right there! :D

"Meat is meat, and man's gotta eat!"

if i had to pick favorites, it would probably be Carpenter's "The Thing" and "Ravenous" (vastly under-rated). "Dog Soldiers" really grows on me each time i see it. i love werewolves.

"The Ring" (and "Ringu") both scared the crap out of me. i honestly had trouble sleeping after "The Ring".

zombie movies are fun, especially w/ a group of friends.

crazed killer movies just don't do it for me. maybe because i used to work in mental health. i got to meet Berkowitz and Shawcross, lucky me. sick, but pathetic.

I can't say that any horror movie I have seen has actually scared me- but I watch a lot of horror flicks. a recent one I enjoyed was Intruder (1989)- Low budget but entertaining. It also stars Sam and Ted Raimi.

on a side note,
Best Mummy movie ever: Bubba Ho-tep (2002)

Since there is some esoteric movie name dropping here :D I thought I'd add some from my collection:

Zombie (aka Zombie 2)
Serpent and the Rainbow
The Fly and The Fly II (the Jeff Goldblum ones)
Basket Case and Basket Case II
Sleepy Hollow
Christine
Angel Heart
Lady in White
Last House on the Left
Burnt Offerings
The Crazies
Freaks
