Anyone tried a different lube?

i have tried finish line and also noticed that it seemed to dry out and get tacky after about a month so I went back to the CRK grease.
I picked up a new Large 21 yesterday and was blown away at how smooth it was. I took it apart and found it was lubed with oil. The previous owner says he used nano oil... so I'm guessing it's 85W?
I have read about nano oil and was pretty skeptical given its lack of data/MSDS info but will probably have to order some now.

I have 85W NanoOil in the pivot and 10W on the washers on the 2 CRKs that I've changed the lube in.

I didn't care for the FinishLine grease either.

BreakFree. And I never take mine apart. When it gets gunked up, I wash it with soap and hot water, let dry and reapply a tiny drop of BF each side of the pivot.

Thanks for the info I will definitely order all three weights of nano oil.

I just tried floglube paste (Amazon prime 1 day :) ) and wasn't very impressed with the action, so I went back to CRK grease. It smells great so just used it to shine up some stripped Infi that lives in the kitchen.

A buddy of mine actually used it as a shave balm...dunno why but that's all he said it's good for...LOL

I've never understood this method. I could never put water into a pivot area and trust it to dry out before any corrosive process takes place. Especially on a CRK pivot where there are numerous places for moisture to fester inside the bushing and holes in the washers. It's just not a good idea at all. I've seen minor rust and pitting from people doing this kind of thing. I'd suggest just take your CRK down once a month or after any gritty work where moisture could have got into the pivot, it was literally designed to be pulled apart and maintained. It loves it, and it's fun.

If I took down my knife every time it was dirty, I'd have worn out the Allen key. My CRKs get dirty are washed under the tap at least a couple times a day. I use my knives for EDC tasks and food prep, and I don't want my orange to taste like packing tape, and can't really do a take-down at work. No issues ever for me with corrosion. Just stay away from the Nano Oil (from some of the horror stories we've see here), and renew the CRK grease every couple months.

I've never had a single spot of corrosion on S35VN, or the pivot bushing. Maybe I'm lucky, but I think it mostly had to do with the stainless properties of S35VN, and the fact the inner pivot bushing is essentially sealed by the film of CRK grease on the inner flat race of the washer. In fact, the only corroded Sebenza I've ever seen is that Janky one that popped up here a couple months back that had been nano-oiled and ended up severely pitted because the Nano oil did not protect the steel.

Here's a tip i use to ensure my knife is completely dry after rinsing it under the sink:

I put my knife in the oven.

Ive had one person say dont do it because it will mess with the heat treat lol, but im not going very high in temp or very long...just enough time to evaporate all the water from the nooks and crannies. I basically put the knife on a baking tray and set it around 200 degrees. I also put a drop of water right next to the knife and watch that drop evaporate. It gives me a good indication of when the water inside the knife is gone!

CRK recommends washing it out with soap and water. That's why they use grease. Grease keeps the moisture out of the pivot assembly and grease will not wash away with soap/water thus the grease protects from the knife from moisture and it stays in place. It was designed to be "pulled apart and maintained" about once a year (or when dropped in mud :)) per CRK.

I got my Finish Line Extreme Fluoro last night and gave it a try. The action feel just like it does with the Reeve grease and now I have enough for my lifetime.

Krytox 205 for the pivot and a 50/50 mix of 203 and 205 for the washers (all perforations partially filled). All folders with metal washers get treated the same, folders with nylon or teflon washers get hit with a very light layer of 203.

ive been using nano 10w for the last 2 months. Gonna take my 21 down to see what it looks like. I use the CRK grease on my Lg inkosi since that opens MUCH smoother than my Large 21.

ETA: so i cleaned the knife today, the washers looked ok. I used CRK lube and it seems to be performing just as good as using the nano 10w.
