Anyone using Whet stones in their sharping?

What i find very sad in the thread i started, is as there are many forum members who are trying really hard to be helpful, there are a few who only want to disrupt the thread with their Nit picking and Sarcastic demeaning replies just to try to make themselves look so very knowledgeable and all knowing.
I find these types of posts as just Trolling of my thread.

ckdexterhaven Thank you for taking the time to post this very informative information, i will look into the Atoma diamond sharpeners is there a reason you use them before moving to the DMT's? also could you expand on the stones from Ali Express (alibaba group) who makes them and how well do the perform?
The Suehiro Gokumyo 20K stone looks like a really quality stone it should at over $300US, it's above what i think i need, but glad you included it.
What blade steels are you doing your sharping on?

Yeah, the stones from Aliexpress are the DMD stones and not to be confused with DMT. DMTs are similar to Atoma, some prefer one, some the other. What I like about Atomas is that they don't have to be worn in whereas DMTs can be quite aggressive at the beginning. Also, there are finer DMTs than there are Atomas but above 1000 I prefer the DMDs. I think the DMDs are an amazing high quality product and a real bargain. They perform better or at least as good as the Naniwa diamond stones for a fraction of the price. I am not sure who makes them.

The Gokumyo is available for a little less at toolsfromjapan. But yeah, it is an expensive stone. I think the best cheaper alternative (although maybe slightly less fine and softer) is the Naniwa Super Stone 12K which is finer than most other 12K stones.

My kitchen knives are HAP 40, 1.2562, 52100, Aogami, Shirogami, 1.3505, 1.2008, AEB-L. My folders are M390, S90V, Maxamet, BD1N, D2, 440C. I think theses stones will work any steel.

I'm not trying to troll you, only trying to get you to understand that FortyTwoBlades FortyTwoBlades and E eKretz aren't either. They are trying to be helpful, not sarcastic. I myself have pointed out the proper use of "whet" vs. "wet" to folks here on the forum and every one has always been glad for it. Using proper terms can make a difference is all.

These guys are very, very generous with their knowledge and are very willing to help out. :)

I don't agree that asking for clarification and asking you to use proper terminology so that people who are willing to help you CAN be helpful is in any way rude, disrespectful or demeaning. And it is in NO WAY nitpicking to ask for clarification or to ask what you mean when you make posts that make no sense. Asking you to clarify what exactly you are trying to ask IS trying to be helpful.

Nobody can answer your questions in any meaningfully useful way if we don't understand them. What you're going to get is a bunch of rambling generalities - much like what you're getting now. I don't mind helping people but I find it a waste of time if you can't word your questions in a way that gets to the point and actually asks what you are trying to learn - in other words, at least gets the meaning across...

If you believe that is rude, then I apologize, but that is the way that these message boards generally work. I would also like to note that although several of us have asked whether you meant synthetic water hones when you said whetstones, you still haven't answered that question directly. We are having to guess by the links you posted and your additional comments. If you had simply addressed that right from the start, you would have had no comments about this whole situation! I'll refrain from addressing the "trolling" comment other than to say that I'm pretty sure you've got that backwards.

ckdexterhaven Again i thank you for the quick reply i find the Atomas stones very interesting and well within my price range, has Aliexpress been a good provider of product and service, do they ship quickly i take it they are not in the United states.
Again you have been very helpful even as i know you are working at a much higher level then i am.

Again for clarification:

DMT is not DMD.

DMT are an American product, they are steel diamond plates. I have some but I prefer Atomas (from Japan). These stones are very coarse and I only use them for example for thinning or creating a new bevel to repair a blade. They are very aggressive and remove a lot of steel and I would not use them for regular sharpening or touching up an edge. You can get Atomas and DMTs at Amazon and many other places.

DMDs are the Chinese stones from Aliexpress. They are resin bonded diamond stones which need water. They are very fast but not as aggressive as diamond steel plates. When I touch up an edge which is blunted, I usually start with the DMD 12K, no need to go coarser.

Aliexpress is not the vendor but shops use them as a platform. I find buying on Aliexpress very safe as the shipment gets tracked and Aliexpress gives a full refund if the shipment does not arrive in their outlined time frame.

I see the Atomas now on Amazon and since i have ordered from Amazon for many years without ever any problems, this will be where i will order my Atomas items, i think the 400 will be my first one.

And again we have a total failure to address direct questions. Oh well. I'm out. Best of luck, OP--you're gonna' need it.

400 atoma brand new is extremely aggressive. I use mine at times but it's worn in after lapping lots of stones which is the reason I bought it in the first place. 325 DMT is much mellower on steel. For a working edge it's fine. For a mirror edge I would think it would leave too many deep scratches.

I have an old Smith Arkansas Med. stone used 40+ years and badly worn, i decided to flatten it using a flat plate and sand paper, it took two hours and a lot of hard pushing the stone across the sand paper.
After two hours the old stone was again nice and flat, but was i worn out maybe the Atoma would have been a good item to have and use.

It is great for lapping. But I use sic powder for the heavy lapping which is new stones(havent bought one in a long time). Just so you know you CAN trash an atoma with a very hard stone and for an extended use. For maintenance though the atomas are perfect. SIC powder is cheap. A granite tile is cheap also. If you decide to use it though do it over a bucket not your sink. The sic can clog the trap(ask me how I know LOL)

Even my sanding a small stone, it caused a lot of dust and powder in my kitchen.

I've also seen warnings that abrasive swarf of AlOx or SiC, in particular, can quickly ruin an in-sink garbage disposal, if one is installed there, as in a kitchen sink. Something else to think about.

I have received a lot of great information and direction from many of my forum members, maybe my posting terminology might have not been perfectly correct in each post, but my forum members most of them, did understand what i was trying to get understood and i thank you for your understanding and help.

Give me novaculite - or give me death........ The only good thing to ever come out of Arkansas.
