Anyone Want to Talk Traditional Fixed Blades?

Samon - great group of blades! Thanks for posting those

Trand
- Thanks buddy. I look forward to it.

RCS - I do not own any military blades and have not the slightest idea on the two you posted. Is there differences between the two? I plan to research them later. Thanks for any info.

EDIT:

RCS - Not sure if you saw this or if it even helps.

Thanks for the link KBA its an interesting read 👍 but I still can't make my mind up though :D

My husband bought a BUCK Woodsman #102 knife for me at a big box store here in town today.

-snip-

Catherine, you like smaller blades and wonder if you've seen these "wee Moras".

The "big" Carl Andersson Scout knife has a 3 1/2" blade and the little burl handled KJ Eriksson comes in at 2 1/2".

Assign one to heads and one to tails. :D When it lands, place that one in the cart, and just before hitting submit check if there is any regret. If there is, put the other in the cart and hit sumbit. :D

It has worked for me. I always seem to really want one above the other, even when I like both. Somtimes I just that little push.

Good luck picking

Cate,

It sounds like you and your husband have wondeful taste in knives. I know I would love to see a few, but I also know that you are not on photobucket to share pics. :(

I peruse the Buck area occassionaly to look and the pics and you are right int that there are some beauties there.

Ive never held/used an old hickory style knife. That may have to be something I look into later in the future.

I hope you and you husband have a great time at the knife show.

Oh, Im a sucker for cocobolo knives as well ;) I've always wanted a nicely hand carved cocobolo handle on a nice swedged drop point fixed blade with a copper guard. :D

Here is a comparison shot of my 2 Khukuris

Cool pictures!

I may get one of those photo accounts one of these days.

My husband went to the show before work on Saturday and I am going with him on Sunday.

A report will follow. Grin.

Thanks for this too. Very pretty!

I like the small blades for my every single day carry in my two different fanny packs. I use the black leather one most of the time. The larger one for the woods/wilderness. Now with some of the larger blade lengths, I will have to carry them on my belt.

Open and conceal carry weapon laws (Knife blade length.) differ within the city limits 'permit' wise.

I no longer own, shoot or carry (Conceal or open.) handguns but I am just as careful about the knife laws as I was with my former handguns.

Thank you Cate. I appreciate that. :)

I look forward to the update.

Nice SAK who's the maker ?

Thanks bud!! Made by Blackjack during the Mike Stewart era. It's a Warner Moran Rio Grande Bowie from the early 90's.

Here's the backstory: (1990 factory lit and sources)

"The Warner Moran Rio Grande camp bowie......is a recreation of the original made 23 years ago. In 1967 now famous author Ken Warner contacted his close friend, master bladesmith and founder of the "American Bladesmith Society", Bill Moran with a special request. Warner had just been offered an "in country" assignment to cover the Viet Nam conflict. He needed a knife that would cut and chop while also having defensive capabilities in the Bush. After much discussion, both men came up with a large version of the classic 19th Century Rio Grande Spearpoint Bowie. The pattern was very popular in the early and mid 1800's because of it's versatility in rugged use, under extreme conditions. This was the first Rio Grande of this size Moran ever made."

The Blade is forged CS51 (Seki equivalent of 5160) Carbon @ 57-59 HRC.

Here's a Blackjack collector page on it.

Well its a great looking Bowie . thanks for the history it was very interesting mate

My Gerber cammand arrived this morning . the blade is very similar to the M3 the only difference being the serrated part on the top edge . it feels really nice in the hand and as a good balance . it come with a very nice American walnut display case . the only thing I am not to happy with is the sheath . but this is just my personal preference . I don't like the belt slits it feels flimsy to me I would of proffered it to have been folded over and stitched . but when all said and done I really like this knife ....

That very cool R.c.s!!!! :thumbup::thumbup:

Had a Gerber like that back in the early 80's but yours is better steel than the MKII I had.

Brings back a memory......
Was looking at my Gerber MKII while sitting on the bed one Saturday morning. Well, I was closely eyeballing it from every angle when it just slipped right out of my hand and buried itself to the hilt in the mattress (just missing my inner thigh). It went through that mattress like was made of jello. Being only married a couple of years, I was horrified at the thought of facing my spitfire of a wife but, "cowboying up", I walked into the living room and said, "Sweetheart, I have done something incredibility stupid and I'm very very sorry". My wife's eyes welled up, her lips started trembling.... I continued by telling how I had punched a hole completely through the new mattress playing with the Gerber. She cried out with joy, while running over and hugging/kissing me!!!! I was awestruck till she explained it...... Seems she was completely relived that it was just a knife in the mattress as she had been treated badly by guys in the past and thought I was fessing up to cheating on her!!!! She happily sewed up the bed while smiling and threatening me with the loss of body parts if it happened again. :D

True story. :)

Brett how are you liking your new khukuris? Have you put either through its paces?

Each feels amazing in the hand, but you can certainly feel the balance in the YC over the gopte. The school year started a couple weeks back and I have been swamped getting my classes together so, I haven't had the time to use them much.

The bottom, gopte, has a crack in the handle that I need to epoxy before going full throttle with it. I have taken out a few branches that needed it and it felt great. Honestly though, the top YC is just begging me to chop a tree down. :D The balance and feel on it is just as though my arm has been extended into a chopper blade itself. I really do love that blade. Thamar did a great job on it.

Even if I do not get to use these two as much as I would like, I am glad I have them. I think everyone needs to feel one of these and have at least two in their "tool box" for use just in case. They really are of amazing quality.

My new knife arrived today . its handmade in Nova Scotia Canada by a company called TRIPLEX . the blade is 01 carbon steel with a hardness of 58-60 and the handle is curly birch . and the sheath is made of Distressed buffalo ( must of had a visit from the IRS :D ) if any body is interested the company offers a life time guarantee . and a life time of free sharpning ...
