Are "Rambo" type knives practical?

You have no idea how ridiculous that sounded.
Let's be totally honest here. That's precisely what the Rambo knife was. A movie prop. I've read that the knives were destroyed in filming the movie. Heck, there wasn't even a knife in the book.

Leghog, I would like to be totally honest. I believe you have a lot to learn from the gentlemen in this thread. Despite your behavior, which has been decidedly immature, no one has hurled insults your way, no one has attacked your character, and no one has asked anything from you except you discuss this like an adult. Which you have failed to do. I have noticed that you spend time in the traditionals forum of this site. I doubt you would appreciate it if someone went and trolled that area the way you are trolling here, or that the people that associate with you in that area would look up to your actions in this thread.

I believe rustyrazor commented on the fact that something must be wrong in some part of your life to make a grown man act like this. That coworker who gave you the pocketknife the other day, would that person feel the same way about you if they saw the way you were behaving in this thread? I doubt it very much, although I obviously don't know them. I'm sure you will have another offhand/elementary remark to make about this post, so I'm not going to bother bantering back and forth on that. But I find it amazing that someone who apparently takes pride in being a military man can act in such an undignified way. Please feel free to join in the discussion, but if you're trying to derail this thread, it's just not going to happen. We're having fun, and when this one ends, I or someone else will start another. This has been a blast, and in your own way, you're helping it stay alive. Thank you,

Sam Wilson

I have never heard about any of the knives being destroyed in the book, but if you have ANY type of reference, I would sincerely like to see it. And I don't know if you have even read the book either, because there was a knife in the book. Rambo's possession of the knife took place differently, but there was a knife that he used. If it's not too impractical, you might bother to read it.

I've given no insults nor acted immaturely in this thread. You simply take exception to my position. C'est la vie.

I was referring to the knives made for the movie being destroyed (not in the script) in the filming of the movie.

I don't take exception to it. I'm glad to have opposing viewpoints. I just prefer to have some substance to them, that's all. You haven't offered any, and now you're having difficulty being wrong about the existence of a knife in the book, as well. Don't take it so seriously, leghog. It's just an internet forum. ;)

Again, do you have anything to share beyond your own statements on this? I think it only fair to want some sort of verification. After all, a moment ago you stated there was no knife in the book, which is obviously untrue. ;)

Reread the thread. It's some of the Rambo knife champions in a tizzy over another having the temerity to disagree and say such knives are impractical. This thread has been fun regardless.

I agree, I have had a blast. I still don't know two things, though. Why you think Rambo type knives are impractical, and what your thoughts are on your previous statements about there being no knife in the book? It kind of casts a pall on your credibility in other areas. You haven't used a "Rambo" knife, you haven't read a "Rambo" book, what makes your opinion on "Rambo" knives so valid after all? I look forward to continued discourse with you. ;)

Vietnam era quality Hackman HH knife.

Wheew, good thing that those guys didnt know it was'nt practical....

Let's be totally honest here. That's precisely what the Rambo knife was. A movie prop.

True, the knife was made for the movie, but clearly, Lile, who I'm pretty sure knew something about knives and knife design, made it to be a practical, working knife for a survival situation. Furthermore, it wasn't even an original idea. Randall, Hackman, and even Lile were making HH survival knives long before First Blood was released. Lile simply tweaked the design, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a real, working knife. Re-read Lile's description. I'm sure you would change your opinion of it being just a "movie prop" rather quickly if you found yourself on the business end of it. ;)

I've read that the knives were destroyed in filming the movie.

Source?

Heck, there wasn't even a knife in the book.

Wrong.

leghog, I checked my book and you are correct. Rambo got food, clothes, and a rifle. I thought he got a small hunting knife along the way, but I guess he didn't. I apologize.

You guys take this stuff too seriously. Seriously. Again, it's fiction.

Don't worry Tom, no apology needed. Leghog is still wrong.
It was the old man in green. But how had he tumbled off the cliff so that he ended up all
the way over here? His equipment belt didn't have a handgun. It did have a hunting
knife, and it had a pouch, and inside Rambo touched something - food. Sticks of meat.
A handful. He bit, barely chewing, swallowing, biting off more. Sausage, sticks of
smoked sausage, wet and crushed a little from the old man slamming onto the rocks, but
it was food, and he was biting into it, chewing, swallowing quickly, forcing himself to
slow and mulch it around to all parts of his mouth; then it was almost gone and he was
tucking the last bits into his mouth and sucking his fingers; and then all that was left was
the smoke taste and his tongue slightly burning from the hot peppers that had been in
with the meat.

You guys take this stuff too seriously. Seriously. Again, it's fiction.

The book and movie are fiction. Just like your line of reasoning, lol. But they sure are fun. Serious fun.

You're quick, Sam. Actually, I just found another reference in the book and was coming back to post it.

" Rambo had his knife out, wrenching the man's rifle away..." pp. 214

It's been a while since I read the book, but I was pretty sure he had one.

Yeah, I believe he even used the knife to dispose of at least one of the deputies. It played pretty heavily in the book. It's easy to see how they ran with the idea in the movie, especially when Jimmy Lile came up with the knife that he did.

The knives were likely divided up among cast and crew of the movie, not destroyed and by the way i had a copy of the book First Blood which had guess what a KNIFE on the cover [looked very similar to a Spartan Harsey but b4 that knife was made].

I've read this thread all the way through been great and made me re-evaluate my thinking on HH blades. I would like one where the handle is internally threaded for attachment purposes, maybe even a total kit with shaft, sheath, and knife altogether but just if it was internally threaded i could make my own shaft, i guess i could try to cut threads myself or have it done at a machine shop [i'm a Mechanic]. I might just do that.

The talk about silver solder holding 172,000psi that is BRAZE strength, brazing is a different animal than silver solder which is used for light duty stuff,... non-critical only.

And to the member who mentioned the Harbor Freight $10 deal, i had 3 of those rattlers, little bitty pin is all that holds the blade...they have promise if thoroughly re-worked / brazed together but other than that, and with their mystery steel they are POS. My 2c. Cool thread, rock on.

Thanks, klute. We have been having a blast in this thread, and in the next couple of days, I will probably start another one in either Custom/Handmade Knives, or in the Wilderness subforum. The idea will be to showcase either user HH knives, or safe queens, but either way, an excuse to look at HH knives. It will basically be a thread all about HH knives and either pics, videos, or talking about them, using them, or past knives that are no longer available, whatever. I will put a link to it in this thread when I get it started.

By the way, you got me wanting some Grimaldi's now, lol.
