Are there Knife companies that makes blades as strong as Busse knives?

I watched many of those youtube tests before they were pulled. I noticed that there were some very expensive "brag" blades that broke early, and some very inexpensive ordinary blades that he had to work very hard at damaging.

There is a tradeoff between hardness and toughness for all steels, some achieve that balance better than others. When I started collecting custom knives nobody except the people that made their own damascus would have thought about using carbon steels in their blades. Fifteen years later it is much different, carbon steel knives are in demand, even carbon steel hunting knives that probably don't need to be tough. But the steel chemistry is just a part of the equation. Heat treat is important and not everybody gets it right. And blade geometry is important. In some of those youtube tests some of the knives liked to fail at places where the manufacture put stress concentrations in the design. Pay attention to all of these things and you might have a tougher knife than average.

I don't have any complaints about this brand except that they are too hard to buy. I don't want one bad enough to beg them to sell me one so I won't ever own one. I'll have to be happy with my $20 Cold Steel knife that also did very well in the destructo tests, it just isn't as pretty.

Know what's sad? I have yet to buy a BK-(#) knife even tho I've seen MANY good reviews! :p

Suppose I get a TGLB, what Becker knife would be an ideal partner for the TGLB?

Interesting discussion.
I own a bunch of Busses, and I think that the Bark River Bravo line compares nicely.
I like Fallkniven as well.

Ultimately everyone has a certain maximum set of theoretical values for various performance characteristics based on their specific tasks, environment, frequency of use, personal methodology/application/technique, etc. etc. so that all has to be taken into account when deciding on what you really realistically need. Busses are exactly the right tool for some folks in terms of what they actually require to comfortably perform their knife-related tasks, but I'd hazard the informed guess that they're an extreme minority. Let's face it--most folks likely buy a Busse for the same reason they buy a CR: chasing the elusive "most X" factor. Personally I'm the sort of guy that looks for "neither too much nor too little"--though we all need to have fun now and then, too. :)

ESEE... Tough as all hell, and a no questions asked, lifetime, owner to owner transferable warranty... Can't beat that.

This thread needs more pictures.

Not to mention the best 1095 heat treat of any production knife company which is why the Rowen 1095 blades do such a great job.

My take on INFI is pretty simple from my own uses it is an AMAZING steel, however I like others more. For example I like Swamp Rats SR101 (52100 with an awesome heat treat) more than I do INFI. I think the biggest turn off for a lot of people with INFI is the fact there are people who think INFI is the best steel choice no matter what the knife is going to be used for and refuse to admit its not always the best choice.

And more videos. Here's a little geometry lesson.

well, that knife may be tough, but at least nobody will accuse it of cutting well...

I love that their "skinny" model is 3/16 thick.... oh, the strange knife world we live in.

(I'm being facetious about not cutting well, it did pretty good with that high primary grind, and shallow looking convex edge)

That's one of the larger gripes that I have with them is the average thickness is on the massive side. They compensate somewhat with wide blades which allows for the edge to remain thin relative to the spine thickness, but they're still just so dang thick! I know they've made some thin knives, but I haven't seen many. I laughed when I saw my buddy's Bushwhacker Mistress on account of him calling it thin. Thin for Busse perhaps, but not thin in my book. :D

Again, I don't cast doubt on the quality of their build or anything like that. They're very finely made, for certain, both in materials and workmanship. It's just EVERY knife or tool has both strengths and weaknesses and I often see overflowing untempered praise, like PatrickKnight mentions, without recognition of the fact that they do have limits and drawbacks. They still need to be viewed from a realistic perspective, as excellent as they may be.

Bill Siegel will make a thick 5160 blade for you that will equal a busse for toughness (maybe not equal price or equal in fancy handles. But they are available when you want one.)

I think this is a key element that helps speak to their durability, all things equal a 1/4" blade is going to be tougher to damage than a 3/16".
I've seen some BWM damage, and I think that had it been 1/4" it might not have been hurt.
I'm not attempting to comment on which is better, just that the thicker blade is obviously going to be more durable, regardless of brand.

This is one of the reasons that I mentioned the Bravo II as comparing favorably, it is one thick chunk of steel...

Love you too, Jimh0220 but how I used the knives on the trail (along with other tools) was and still is up to me; I will use it as I see fit. As for "some" a few of those knives had flaws which the company in question admitted and replaced. So please do not assume my history with knives. Thank you.

Just buy your Busse and get on with breaking it. I'm sure you will, and no other answers you've been given matter. Abuse away my friend. (BTW, it's not a badge of honor to brag about abusing your knives, even if you choose to. Kinda stupid, but not cool.)

Again, you still don't know the reasons why they broke on me. It's not like I'm going around breaking them on purpose, throwing them under the bus so to speak. Everything humans has created will break some day, some how. Just stop being pessimistic and just enjoy life as nothing lasts forever.

My badge of honor is the tasks I got completed, not the breaking of knives as that's only a mean to an end in the grand scheme of things.

Wow, you must buy a ton of defective knives then. But then again, clearing land and trailblazing DOES sound more like big boy tool work... I'm proud when I cut a cord of wood with a chainsaw, but I'm not too proud if I killed the saw in the process.

Good lord, please stop your lack of contribution to the OP

I like Busse knives because I have confidence in them. The kin (Swamp Rat and Scrapyard) are better bang for the buck,to me anyway.I have other knives that I like, but as I said Busse and kin just give me the confidence that I will not damage the knife if I make a mistake. And if I do damage it,I know they will fix it.

Someone once said(I don't know who) that Busse's are for people who like to see what the inside of a rock looks like.:D

Good lord, please stop your lack of contribution to the OP

I cannot, for someone must STOP THE MADNESS!!!!
If OP wants to complain about how he breaks every knife misusing it, and is now looking for people to stroke his Busse fantasy, then shouldn't anyone question WHY he seeks indestuctability, yet abuses what he has? If he wants a Busse, go for it. If he wants to whine about how many knives he breaks, someone needs to call him on why he breaks them. We are on a blade site, and abuse is counter to what this site is about, in theory at least.

OP, I AM a little ray of sunshine! Don't you forget it! (Nice Turbo referece. Cute little snail, eh?)
