Are there Knife companies that makes blades as strong as Busse knives?

Ok, I've had enough, Jimh0220.

1. I'm a she
2. I mention the knives breaking with light hearted casual air, there was no complaining as I accepted the reality of what I did and learned from it.
3. This thread is not about Busse but products like Busse which is what I asked about in the first place.

If you cannot abide by the subject this thread is created for, please leave. Thank you.

This is entertaining! I would say Cold Steel! Gerber! SOG! If Gunny Hartman uses them they must be tough as nails!!

... I recommend you look at the Knife Research knives. as friend of me says, if the US have Busse... Europe has Knife Research.

Knife Research makes excellent knives. Check out their test section.

This thread seems to have missed its point and gone to dinner. I'm sorry I can't be of much help OP, as I'm not sure exactly what you're using your knife for. If you're continuing the trail clearing I'm not sure I would choose a knife, and might look at an axe/hatchet or a machete instead. Sorry if I'm off base here, it's just my 0.02.

Already have other tools to use, no worries. :)
I'm simply a knife lover using this thread to find more ranges of knives to obtain and use.

LadyEarth I find this thread fascinating. IMO there's nothing wrong with testing knives to their limits in an outdoor work environment. In fact I would think folks would applaud the effort, and be interested in hearing details. Personally I'm very interested in Knife Research Sliepner steel. While it's composition is different from Infi, it has some of the same positive attributes and compulsive attention to detail regarding heat treat and testing. I recently acquired the "Legion" model in Sleipner steel, and initial tests are very positive. I'm no metallurgist or knife expert, but I plan to share a review of the blade when time permits.

My Knife Research Legion should be here any day now. The Legion is manufactured and designed by LionSteel of Italy. The designer is Molletta who also designed the LionSteel SR-1 which also uses Sleipner in the Titanium version. Other LionSteel manufactured knives with Sleipner are LionSteel SR-2 (Ti & Al), PM-1, DPx HEST/F 2.0 Milspec, HEST Assault II, HEFT Assault 4/6. The Sleipner steel used by KR has specific heat treatment.

Nothing wrong with your "search" but I would venture to say that you are firmly on the road to addiction. About six years ago I found myself enmeshed in the hobby of knife collecting and it was, by any standard, a full blown addiction. As I have said before, get ready to shell out too much money for products you don't really need. And please, if you have to battle steel plates and concrete pillars, at least have enough sense to wear a good pair of gloves along with protective eyewear.

Basically what marketing does is broadcast the idea that the model of last year is no longer good enough or appropriate for use. If you buy into such a notion, what happens is that the road to collecting becomes an endless search, albeit, a fun one. There is no satisfaction at hand, perhaps just for a sliver of a second. The lure transforms into the addiction and you slide into the hilarious (and sometimes bizarre) behavior that makes us buy knives we don't need or use. Then we triangulate others into our obsession. Some of us just buy and hold, others buy and sell, but in the tertiary phase, all of us give up the steel for someone else to dispose of.

Hi LadyEarth -

I love heavy duty, overbuilt knives and I am not ashamed to admit it. I know I have a problem, but it makes me happy.

I had John Kiedaisch of JK Handmade Knives make me a Hard Use Knife of my own design (of course I love it!) -

Introducing the JK XD XT Tactical Bowie - (eXtreme Duty, eXtra Thick)

I made a template in two sizes and then sent them to John -

I asked him to make the first version. I love the flared rivets on the Busse Knives, so I asked John to do something like that on the XD XT. I also specified the use of Garolite (he had some in his shop and I liked it...) and red liners for an extra thick handle.

The result was beyond my expectations -
12" overall
7" blade
1/4" thick O1 steel
Roughly 2" tall at thumb ramp
Rounded spine
Thumb notches
3/8" flared copper handle pins
Offered in any micarta (G10 optional)

I am working on better pictures, but here are some that I currently have -

If you doubt JK's 01 steel heat treat, please review this abuse passaround that was run a while back - and this knife was "only" 1/8" thick!

It's cool to have someone make your own design - I highly recommend it!

Some of us are forgetting that this hobby is about having fun. Some of my friends huck 90' waterfalls in their kayaks for fun. To me, sure as sh!t, that's stupid. But to each their own! Just seeing what it can do can be fun with knives. I've hacked up an oil can and repeatedly thrown my JK knives Urban Hatchet as hard as I can, missing several times, not caring that it is hitting limestone at probably 40-60mph. I've personally not owned any Busses, but Swamp Rat's SR101 has blown me away with its abilities.

I've been around knives since I was 5 years old and still have my first knife on my shelf (a USA "Ranger" folding knife, forgot the name of the maker). One thing that keeps my wallet safe is I rather use the knife and buy what I will actually use. If I'm not going to use it (such as ZT 0350, ZT 0560, HI knives, Swamp Rat RMD LE, etc) I will just sell it off, thus keeping my collection to under 15 knives.

Reason why I love the idea of owning a Busse, BusseKin, or any strongly made knives is because I love the idea that it can take a beating and come back to me smiling asking for more. I grew up with a construction father so I've been around tools all my life, just so happen that the knife is a tool I would like to have by my side, every day. Yes, some knives are made for only cutting (e.g. Benchmade Onslaught D2 steel which I traded to kershawdave) but there are knives design to cut, "pry", chop wood, etc. The beauty of sharp things is that there are so many purposes for them! I love it!

I've done some trail clearing and land clearing with a busse NMFBM LE. Is it the most practical tool for the job? Probably not, but it is an absolute pleasure to use.

Wow, is it me or does Knife Research have more friendly customizing options than Busse does, such as Satin blades, etc?

Will take a serious look at this brand, even tho I'm puzzling out the Euro price. :p
