Are you over Super Steels?

I'm not talking being disgusted at a steak house steak knife and flicking out your PM2 to remedy the situation use or chopping carrots in the kitchen, which seems to be ....

Sorry man, you gotta tell your buddy he was carrying around a fake. But I do agree with your above statement. It's not anything to be snobby about, but some people do claim they use their knives a lot and how great a steel is in use and when theyre pressed they talk about exactly what you just mentioned.

Friends don't let friends buy fakes:eek:

I hope it was a fake. He paid full retail and he would fit in perfectly here. Lots of people even here are carrying fakes. I've seen so many fake spydercos flying off tables at gun shows there's no way there is as many real ones in circulation. I bet they chop carrots and cut steaks just fine too.

I can't wait to hear what else they've read about what's crap, and what's not. The fun part is reading their reactions to visual stimulation of an inferior steel performing better than they read it does, and blindly repeat over and over. Heck, I don't like the fact it keeps an edge twice as long as my favorite 1095, but a facts a fact and I'm the one who has to live with it, not them.

Very good. :D Reminds me of the definition of a boat . . . a hole in the water surrounded by wood into which you pour money! ;)

Personally, I think the fun part is when those who prattle on about experience being the only teacher start arguing against steels they admitted they have never used.

And then when someone does say they used a steel they get attacked saying they don't have ENOUGH experience. And if they show that they've used multiple versions, then it's that they haven't used a version from a custom heat treater. And then if they say they have, then they say that custom heat treater didn't go hard enough, or soft enough. And if they say that they did go hard or soft enough, then they say the grind must have not been thick or thin enough. And if they say it was thick or thin enough, then they say there must be a problem with sharpening. If that's not the case then the person is simply called a liar. Gotta love it, anything and everything to protect certain classes of steels. Odd position to take for someone to ignore valid experience and results to protect some freaking steel and companies, but it happens :)

Fake S30V, but who batons with a folder? Guess reading data sheets is just too much work when buying a pricey piece of steel, or not as satisfying as the marketing.

Perhaps this is why so many are "over" "super" steels. Guess they'll be out the market when those unobtainium blades start showing up.

Boris74, whoa so defensive. I was not in disagreement with you or your findings. I'm gonna assume that entire monologue was not entirely aimed at me.

I'm sure that a well heat treated 8cr13mov from a mediocre foundry is much better than a poorly heat treated 8cr13mov from a crappy foundry.

Pretty much common sense, so why did you have to spell that out for me? Was it that big of a revelation for you when you figured this out?

You need to understand something... I'm not part of the S30v defense team lmao and I was not saying anything bad about 8Cr.

For everyone saying "fake" - the Paramilitary2 is not the only Paramilitary that Spyderco has ever made. The Paramilitary 1 had a shorter blade and no jimping in the choil.

(I agree that the writing looks a little funny - too squished together almost. So it could still be counterfeit - but if it is, it's a fake PM1, not 2 in my opinion.)

Boris74,

First off, you come in here triumphantly proclaiming that a value steel 8cr13mov can handle batoning while S30v cannot. That's all good and cute with me no problem there. More than a handful respond that the shattered S30v blade you posted is likely a fake. Now, if it is fake it doesn't mean your opinion on these steels are incorrect but taking your post at face value, it does not support your position when the graphic "tada" proof picture may be a counterfeit. In jest, I inserted that if it is fake, in all likelyhood it is 8cr13mov, the very steel you were boasting about. There is some irony there whether you like it or not and you going on a half page tangent shows that it upset you...So I'm sorry.

Another thing, you made so many assumptions about me that I lost count. Let me tell you something... you don't know shit about me or anyone else here and what we know and do. Now, I can behave like you and go off saying things like "you don't know anything", "you just cut marshmallows and cottonballs", "you never tested s30v" etc etc but no I'm not going to do that. So stick with batoning knives which you think your good at but you are not Sherlock Holmes.

"I will never be able to convince you"
Why not? How do you know that I am disagreeing with you in the first place? Get off your high horse because it's not impressing anyone except Bodog who is now acting like he found a team mate lmao.

What's normal use? And you keep saying cedar blocks but I'm going to guess you're talking about cinder blocks. If you're saying people who want a highly hardened tough steel that also has high wear resistance only cut cinder blocks and that's what they're basing their needs on, then you're unfairly partitioning a huge segment of knife users and relegating them to the realm of ridiculous like their opinions don't matter. It seems like it's just a way for you to reconcile that people do, in fact, need something different than you but you can't or won't accept it. If you kept it in the realm of reality then a lot of your arguments over the years will be nullified because you want to believe that what you've found working for you SHOULD work for everyone else. That's not true. People are different and do different things. Not everyone is you, Jim, and people do value other things. They're just as right as you if they have valid reasons. You're trying to invalidate their reasons by equating them to cutting cinder blocks as their intended and daily usage. That's ridiculous man.

Now you owe me 5 cents :D

Didn't we just go over this in that m390 thread? :D

Other tool steels commonly misrepresented as "super steels" also share a similar fate, designed for industrial applications, later adapated for cutlery use. S30V is not one of these cases, it was designed for cutlery, but that's in the data sheet. Not as sexy as the "Insert Brand" youtube channel cutting through a truck or chopping a giant redwood down, so I can see how some could feel, let down.

Now I'm not going to tell you how to drive your car, but you get it. We have roads, signs, laws. Sure, not everyone obeys them, but hey, it's a free country.

I wanted to say thank you to those who've been keeping this thread on track and without nastiness. Please continue on the same way as this is how discussion threads should go.

Were there fake PM1's though?

As far as fake PM2's, there's literally dozens of variations... Some without jimping. I've even seen linerlock models that look just like "PM2's".

Come to think of it, 1 and 2 are so similar that I wonder what the Chinese are copying in the many fakes they make.

Typical response from the I read this steel is superior and this one is inferior crowd.

You try to figure stuff out that isn't being said. So to clear it up, it's obvious to me bodog has used S30V and has made the same exact observations I have. Pretty sure neither of us care if someone is offended by our findings. It's just two knife users posting online about their findings.

I also love your dig on 8cr13mov. Lmao, it's the actual shattering steel! So knowledgeable you are!

what I'm waiting for is your hey wait a minute, I've used both and this is what I've learned through using them post. If you had it, you'd of posted it by now. I'm not holding my breath waiting for any for you.

Yes don't hold your breath but just so you know, there are people out there that don't do any testing the way you do and don't take pictures of them testing...You know... Regular people. You have got to be the smartest around to deduce that since I don't test knives it means I have no experience with the two of the most common steels in knife-dom.... And to assume that those who dont post knife testing means all they cut are carrots at home. You are a piece of work.

What dig on 8cr? Did you even read my post? Let me act like you: Oh yes typical response from a know it all  How smart you are!

Can someone here please...please show me where I "dug on 8cr"...I wont hold my breath.

We used S30V in commercial kitchens years back, S35VN was the update to it that seemed to stick for some CPM fans who didn't like S30V, including myself. The rest go back and forth between carbon and stainless over the years in my experience.

I enjoy good steel on my XM18, 0392, Striders, but never opt for the better steel when available on for example my 0562. Don't feel it's necessary for me and they usually also have CF scales which I have some of but prefer black g10 mostly. So yeah, never really on the super steel train.

Not sure about fake PM1s. The PM2 was ascendant when I really got into modern folders so except for seeing the CPM-D2 version occasionally I missed most of the PM1s.

You did use a bunch of words to say what you wanted. Condensed it for you.

you don't need pictures. Just tell me what you've done with 8cr13mov and S30V to gain experience with them. I'll know from just that exactly where you stand.
