Mossburg has really stepped up its game lately. I got the new Semi Auto from them and its very nice.

Been looking at their 930 tactical models. I used to have a Beretta 1201FP and that was a lot of fun. I would really like to get another semi-auto shotgun or 30. The SA-20 looks like it could be a decent 20gauge option, I just wish I could get an 18" barrel instead of 20".

870 or Mossberg 500, and... go

bigghoss has given the correct answer.

I should've known, then which one firat?

If that word should be "first" as opposed to "firat", then you could flip a coin. Either way, I'd get a combo that comes with an 18" slug barrel and a 28" vent rib barrel with choke tubes. I might give the Mossberg a slight edge over the Remington and make it my first choice...even though I did it the other way around.

I seem to be having problems posting and there were several replies in the several minutes it took to make it work....

I have a 930 SPX that I bought for 3-gun matches and it works great! They had one match stage with the shotgun shooing prone underneath a barrier....total PITA with my 870 Express. I've loaded the magazine tube on the 930 with target, upland game, buckshot, and slug loads in random order...flawless function even with the widely varying pressures.

Also got an SA-20 for my wife. She loves it as well. Did the same function test with random loads and no issues with this one either. She is a small lady, and the 20" barrel isn't too much for her. With the 870 (either 12 ga or 20 ga), the Mossberg 500 or 930, she can barely lift the barrel level to the ground because of the weight. She handles the SA-20 easily and it makes nice holes in targets with both 20 ga slugs and #2 Buck.

Howdy G shark!

Well it's official... My next purchase is coming from Barlow. It's only right to blame Tradewater! :D

For a defensive type shotgun the Norinco Hawk 982 shotguns aren't bad. Basically an 870 clone with ghost rings. Takes most 870 accessories like stocks and such but the mag tube is longer so the barrels won't interchange. You can find them for about $200 new.

Either. I've heard that Remington's quality has dropped off quite a bit over the last few years so an older used one might be the way to go for an 870.

What do you want it for?

I was wanting something to be kind of a jack of all trades type of gun, home defense, range toy, maybe even drop a plug in it for hunting.

Right now I'm looking at a police surp 870 with ghost rings, but I've been watching some videos from IV8888, and the Mossberg really been catching my eye. What ever I get I'd like to be able to put some magpul furniture on it

Go with mossberg. They have duel extractors. Remington doesn't.
I've heard they've had problems with one of the extractors breaking though

It was bright as hell out last night, but tonight... I can't see anything up there..

Maybe its just a really good eclipse...

I'm not aware of that. All I own are mossberg a and have used the s#%t out of them. Never had any problems

not a fan of the tang safety.

OTOH, we have crystal clear skies - currently there's a third of the moon in shadow.

Well a Mossberg combo would do almost everything, but the police 870's will dry up. There will probably be more down the road as agencies trade in guns, but they might not have ghost rings or there might be something else weird and you're gonna be kicking yourself for not getting one.

+1 on this, although you can order a police, but from what I hear, the older ones are better by a pretty good margine.

Why do people feel the need to quote a post that has mega photos in it, so you have to scroll through the photos twice to get to what the next poster says?

Maybe its just a really good eclipse...

Here in north Jersey we had a good break in the clouds around 20:00 and that full moon was almost blinding. By the time the eclipse was due, just after 21:00, the clouds blocked the view. The reddening should begin after 22:00.

Good luck on the view!

I have both and shoot them all the time. I personally don't have any use for anything but a bead on the front of the barrel. no need for all the fancy fluff.
You cant go wrong with either model.
