Vermont is usually a working vacation for me. Going with the fil. The place hasn't been opened up for 2 years.
Just Google Earthed it. 123 miles.
We leave tomorrow morning, and will get there Saturday evening. 1,300 mile drive. We leave next Friday morning, and get home Saturday night, so we have a day to recoup before going back to the shit hole.So....an easy 2 hour trip is what you're saying. Hell, a lotta mornings that's my commute to my first job.....seriously. Like tomorrow: about a 100 miles to the first one. Hopefully there isn't a second one.
Plus it's next weekend, so you can get everything done during the week and then come and relax and have some bacon. Play with knives, throw some tomahawks, talk rabbit raising with dres and copperhead.....
Did I mention that there'll be bacon?

Easy is right! In Texas, that would be considered "next door." No excuses...

It's all good man. We were supposed to go in July, the weekend of the 4th, but my mom couldn't make it then. So Pop rescheduled for now. It's kind of his deal. We take his car, (a Prius with 4 of us in it, haha) he pays for gas, hotel rooms there and back, plus we live rent free for the week we'll be there. The only thing we have to pay for is food. He does usually let us take his car for a day, which is nice, to do some sight seeing. We're all looking forward to the foliage. Here's the last time we went: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...nt-Trip-(Photo-Heavy)?p=12471959#post12471959Hey, I'm just kidding. I know it's a lot of driving to just GET to VT from IL.....and 123 miles from VT to Trailbum's house in NH would likely take about 3 hrs. due to all those damn mountains.....and the fact that there are quite literally NO east-west highways in NH OR VT.
Have at least a little fun in VT. From what I remember of the pics, your FIL's place is in a beautiful location. Trees are starting to explode with color here already, so at least there'll be some leaf peeping. Safe travels.
Fruit, absolutely you could... just like making wine. If nothing else, you're going to boost the sugar content and help the fermentation along. That's going to taste quite different than just adding say strawberry extract at the end... just like fresh juice tastes different from wine, and wine tastes different from brandy. There's a reason people just make the purest, cleanest shine they can and add flavors later. Or just make fruit brandy to begin with... but fruit's usually so expensive you're better off just buying wine at the store, unless you own an orchard/berry patch.
Which brings me to another point, that my wife cannot wrap her head around... "But I like the strawberry and blueberry moonshine! So what if it costs a little more?" Because dear, you're paying more money for less shine... get the clear and I can add whatever dang juice or berries you want to it... you'll have half-again as much for the same or less cost...
Spices and/or wood... I'm thinking that's going to cause problems when you distill it - maybe serious ones? I for one would not want to be the guinea pig drinking the first batch of fermented wood.Spices and tannins probably aren't going to absorb very well until there's alcohol present to break them down anyway. I could be completely wrong of course... give it a try. Don't come crying to me if you go blind
