ARK knife. I find the need for this disturbing

This is yet one more reason I appreciate Spyderco above all other knife companies.

John, thank you, and thank you Sam. It is terrible that our people have to be subjected to such abuse from "friends" as well as foes. I will let all of my friends know who have family members in those places.
 
There are plenty of existing little neck knives for sale that aren't $100 and are readily available right now..

Looks like spyderco is simply cashing in on tragic event (just like that 9/11 knife thing!) and the spread of fear by media. If you care so much, why not aim to make it cheaper or with an active duty member discount??

Call me cynical or whatever, but this smells fishier than otter breath.

Salmon, frankly, that's an absolutely ignorant statement.
1) I mentioned the issue to Spyderco in early 2012, before the sexual assault problem was widely publicized;
2) Most of the dialog about sexual assault assumes the problem is caused by fellow service members;
3) I am aware of no other really good defensive neck knives by other companies in H1;
4) I approached Spyderco, asking for their help.

I don't find your comments to be just "playing devil's advocate", I find it to be hostile, ill-considered and confrontational, especially considering Spyderco's sterling reputation and my long experience of the ways they go above and beyond to help service members.
 
(And, frankly, these comments make me mad as hell. I completely understand the OP's revulsion at the thought of these horrible attacks on my brothers and sisters in uniform, but you, sir- I find your statements highly offensive. Spyderco has expended a lot of time and resources on to help guys like me. I'm just about too angry to type, so I'll stop now.)
 
Just speaking my own mind, dude.

I'm not surprised by the instantly negatives attitude towards my thoughts though. Reminds me of something I heard once 'If you don't buy it, you're not a patriot'. And that's not referring to this knife in particular, but the general 'tragedy = profit' tactics in businesses.

The knife looks good, don't get that part of my thinking wrong. But I don't think spyderco are in any way saints for marketing it.
 
It has nothing to do with anything other than being in on the project since the beginning, and knowing exactly how spurious and foolish your comments are. I already gave most of those reasons already. Anyone can have an opinion, but there are more and less educated ones.

So you can sell your ideal all night long, I still ain't buying. I find marketing things like this suspicious and tacky. And that's not a bad thing, it's a perspective that is needed to balance out the gullible lot.

Good luck with your knife though. Don't let it get changed to much from your original design/plans like the PITS folder, only thing reminiscent of the original is the holes in the handle..

Feel free to cash in on the must have 'anti rape' tool of the year. I'm sure you feel strongly about it, but as soon as money gets involved, the fruit goes sour.

If you want action against rape in the forces, petition for better regulations and policing in the military instead of marketing something.

You clearly have paid no attention to the problem the ARK was actually created to combat, even though it was described in both the Byte and carefully in this thread. Don't let that stop you from having a completely baseless opinion, though.

Perhaps the fellow you're responding to is forgetting something; a multi-pronged approach is required.
Of course petitions are made, and training modifications can help...but tools need to be provided to the people at risk to deal with the issue immediately.

And that's what this knife is aimed at; providing a tool to address the issue, which is an important part of a multi-pronged approach.

Sure, but this one looks quite useful and easy to use, and being made in H1 steel to be rustproof is something the others out there just don't have.

Yes, one could be made in titanium, but then it would cost even more, and be less useful as a knife.
This knife will be useful for utility tasks as well as being ready for if an assault needs to be handled.

Personally, I can't wait to get one in hand. I have a ton of neck knives, and very few of them are light enough to be comfortable to wear regularly. And the others are too tiny to be really functional. When I finally picked up an H1 Dragonfly, I was blown away at how light it was, yet very functional.

If it turns out to even be close to expectation, I'll be giving a bunch as gifts, in military or not. I'm a big fan of simply being prepared. I see it as a product to be worn any time less clothing limits other methods of carry. Whether it be the beach, water park, or showers.
