Jerry Fisk will have this sole authorship piece at the show and after spending a few days with it in my studio, I'd suggest you check it out in person if you can. It's a great example of his work and part of his National Living Treasure series of handmade knives. This one is designated NLT#9 '10.
The mammoth ivory handle slabs may not be the most beautiful of all time but, IMHO, they are the most beautiful i've ever seen!
Absolutely incredible.
There's more to admire in this particular Fisk creation and for me the blade really stands out. It's an 8 1/4 in. forged damascus blade (OAL is 13 in.) in the rare antique bowie style found in examples by Samuel Bell. That is to say it has a sharp top edge that is chisel ground. Per Jerry, "It's the only type of top edge that will reliably cut a 1 in rope."
It took a lot of control to forge and finish this excellent blade. The perfect full length taper, the junction between the blade spine and the scoop start of the chisel grind, and then finally the transition from the chisel grind to the convex spear tip - perfect execution of all three is critical to the success of this blade and it would be
so easy to screw up. Jerry's blade is flawless.
We often marvel at the high level of technical competence visible in the custom knife world today and Jerry is no exception. What I see (and feel) in this blade is technical competence, plus
confidence - a lot of hard-won self-confidence. I told Jerry that a bunch of his collectors will be weeping when they see this one fly away.
