Arkansas Knife Show 2011-Show Us what you Got

Gary I really, really like that sword. Most definitely a must see for me at the show. Might have to make a beeline to your table.

Jon

Thanks for all of the kind words. I had a lot of fun with this one (being my first attempt at sword making). :)Making a blade of this length was definately a challenge.

Jerry's NLT 9 is in my dreams every night since I saw the picture of it!

Gary, a real cool sword. Would love to experience the balance and handling characteristics. Guess I'll have to get a report out from Jon after the show.

Not having done this before, I took the advice of some experienced sword makers & made the balance point of the sword 4 1/2" to 5" ahead of the guard. I don't have it in front of me now but I believe that it ended up being slightly less than 1/4" thick at the hilt with the majority of it the same until you get to the tip taper. I don't have a scale to accurately measure it but the weight should be a little under two pounds.

The blade isn't rigid but has a little flex. I have no equipment for checking but believe that the spine is somewhat softer than the edge. (I noticed a hamon when etching it.) When I H/T'ed the blade, I had clamped two pieces of 1/2" by 1/2" steel to it to insure that it stayed straight and I believe that they acted similiar to a clay coating and kept the spine from hardening the same as the edge. :)It was a bit of a challenge keeping the edge & center grind line straight while making the flex equal throughout the blade but I believe that it is pretty close.

I know this explanation is nothing like handling it but hope that it helps. Thanks for the interest. Wish you could be at the show. It's always a good time.

Thanks for the info, Gary. Really wish I could make this show.

Roger, a televised event with Jon as host works for me  The Jon Klein Show actually has a pretty cool ring to it!

Here are some I'll have on the table in Little Rock, beginning with one Buddy Thomason just shot for me.

All of these will have the famous PAUL LONG Sheaths!

The blade is an 8 3/4 inch, 4-bar Damascus, with each final bar a "W cored" 9 bar. The fittings are 2-bar "W" Damascus , and the handle ancient Walrus. The Knife's a "Take-down," and the take-down tool holds spare pins.

I'll also bring three W-2 hamon blades.

Here's an 11 inch Stag-handled Bowie/Fighter

and here's a 10 inch Mammoth Ivory handled Bowie/Fighter, that isn't yet polished. I'll be polishing the hamon at the Havana, FL Hammer-In next Saturday.

WOW! Great line-up John! I'd be happy with any one of them, but that damascus bowie is particularly sweet.

Man oh man John those are some killer pieces. You really do keep raising the bar.

Roger, Rob the "Jon Klein Show" may be a bit too much for me. I am horribly camera shy! In any event I will happily keep my fellow forumites as informed as possible can from the show.

Great looking line-up, John!

I'll be polishing the hamon at the Havana, FL Hammer-In next Saturday.

Tell them old Florida boys I said hello. Good folks! BTW, I used to live in Havana FL. :)

:eek:Incredible knives John:thumbup:

With this incredible Lineup of knives from all you Guys, I sure wish I was going!!

That trio of W2 knives is special, John. Your table will be well protected! (for a short time). :D

The camper has a very muscular look about it. 7 & 1/2-incher on steriods.

Would love to own any of the three.

Thanks for the comments on my knives, guys. I can't wait to see Jerry's 'n Don's 'n Brion's 'n Gary's in person at the show.( Gary, we gotta talk swords.)

Y'all come who can!

Don, we're going to clay-harden some W-2 blades, and polish one out at Havana. Since you used to live there, I'll put some North Florida dirt on my little D.Hanson voodoo doll for the demo!

Joe, one of the blades I'll be working at Havana is the 11 inch big brother to the camp knife. Two on steriods.

John

Gary,
I took a batch of knives to Chuck Ward's Friday while he was finishing up your sword photo. I hope you don't mind but I handled your sword. My hat's off to you for some very, very straight center grinds. That's not easy on such a long blade but you certainly pulled it off.
