By the way, I rave about the Manix 2 but tested it against some other folders in a buscrafty type capacity. Although the gimping on the knife gives you good retention I really wish they would do away with it. When trying to make hard cuts with a full hand grip its not very comfy. I understand why they are there, but I wish they would make the g10 a little thicker/rounder, keep the gimping in the finger choil and on the blade spine, leave it off the handle completely. Then skeletonize the liners a bit... If they would do that I think it would be a 100X better knife. Its already fantastic, but those things would make it so much more user friendly. I smell some modifications lol

I agree wholeheartedly about the gimping. I've already taken it down on the blade side of the handle. Much more comfortable in a hard grip.

I thought 154cm was pretty much just the American version of Japanese VG10?

Nope. 154CM has a bunch more molybdenum, VG-10 has a fair amount of cobalt instead. They're both good quality alloys in the same general class, though.

You might be thinking of ATS-34, which is the Japanese (Hitachi) version of 154CM.

154CM is the Crucible (American) version of Mitsubishi's ATS-34. Same chemistry. I am uncertain which came first. Both are basically an evolution of 440C. I've never had 440C that I loved, but 154CM makes the grade for me. Of course I've never had custom or high-end 440C either...

I still am a carbon steel fanatic though so I get more excited about well HT'd Carbon Steel than any "super" steel on the Market.

and have you tried A2?

Nice, I need to do the same around the handle. Just take it down even to the g10. It would probably still give some sort of traction minus the whole little spike sob's diggin into my palm.

I have not had a chance to try some A2. I understand that it is supposed to be a very tough/durable steel with good potential. It has always interested me just havent had a chance to use it.

So I was saving the box my 42" flatscreen came in so I could use one of the huge sides to cover my bedroom window since I work nights and sleep during the day. Finally got around to using it and it's going to work great. Used the virgin BK7 to cut up the box and slice up what was left over to fit in the recycling bin. It was double thick so it was kinda tough since the cardboard didn't want to flex and displace for the blade. But it held the wicked sharp factory edge the whole time. Scuffed up the coating pretty good but that's coming off sooner or later anyway.

The early, early Busses were A2, I believe. I've got a David Wesner chopper in A2. Good steel.

I really like the Manix 2. Its an awesome folder and i will get another one when i can get the FFG versions. But honestly this Vantage pro seems to slice better than the hollow grind Manix 2. And i didnt want that to be the case because i LOVE the Manix 2. But being honest to myself this Vantage Pro makes a better slicer for me. I prefer the grind on the Vantage over the grind on the hollow ground Manix 2 in use.

When it comes to the handle... Some people complain about the Vantage being too smooth, but i think thats one of the things i like about it. I have tried taking some real deep hard bites out of wood and it still doesnt slip out of my hands or anything. Just feels smooth. But i really miss the choil area of the Manix 2, and there was definitely more room to grip the knife on the Manix's handle. My hands are not huge so i have plenty handle on the Vantage, but some people with larger hands would prefer the Manix size im sure. I also like the locking mechanism on the Manix better as well.

But when it comes down to it, i think everyone should try out one of these Vantage Pros as well. Im amazed at how much folder this is for the price. The Manix 2 feels like a $100+ dollar folder, and the price reflects that, this Buck also feels like 100 dollar folder but the price is crazy affordable for what you get.

big big snow storm, lost the power 15 minutes ago. lol. ah, infrastructure. we'll see how long this takes ;)

You and Daizee are right and thank yall. I knew that 154cm was an analogous American version of a Japanese steel just had things mixed up.

Yah I was looking at the new manix 2's and they are supposed to be full flat with skeletonized liners, and a black translucent bearing cage/lock release. Probably will be a much better slicer. Probably am the only one here but I think it would have been awesome to not have a hollow version but a flat/saber version. Kind of like the older Enduras. That would have definitely been a stout son of a gun!

Yes and id love an old badger attack in A2, But where is the pics of this Wesner chopper?

I found a thread with some pics of Guyon's Wesnor Chopper... Holy cow is it ever sweet....

Here is the link http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/833577-5160-steel-your-opinion-matters

Here is the dessert I made last night, apple and blueberry pastries, with cinnamon sugar on top:

And gave my new BK4 a quick workout yesterday. Very impressed with it's chopping and batoning abilities!

Half way through the log.

Split it in two, no worries mate :D

Sittin' pretty.

After chopping the remains into smaller pieces.

Nice and dirty!

Overall, I really enjoyed using the 4!

So last week I was in a gunstore and they had a camillus BK9 on the counter. I picked it up and fondled it a little bit. I think I see why they're so popular, nice balance and weight to them.
