Just sharing my own addiction. You aught to see me when people bring in wood. I want to start cutting even before we get it unloaded.

received my burl today. thank you! it looks beautiful I will post my finished product as soon as possible.

Mr Burl Source, you wouldnt happen to have any ebony would you? I think its also called ebony gaboon. Ive always wanted to try some. I'll purchase it at regular price of you do since Ive already take you up on your offer here before.

So far so good in the knife WIP thread. On page 8 here is the picture of the blocks you sent me with the steel. Im thinking redwood for my WIP knife. The blade is getting there. Soon I'll have the edge done, and the wood traced to work on while its out getting HT.

Any reccomendations for working the redwood? Id like to stain it a smidge darker red. Give it a brown red kind of color. Would a clear coat bring that out as is? And would I need to do anything else to this wood before/after attaching it to the knife?

Paypal sent. Burl, thanks for the opportunity, I know you have said it would take a while and that is perfectly ok with me.

I went to a show a few weeks back and was looking at different materials for handles and it was VERY intimidating to pick something out for a first knife when there is a chance that the knife/handles might not turn out very nice, and then you realized you just wasted some very nice wood.

What you are doing is taking some of that worry away from new makers. They can do their best without the worry of spending lots of $ on handle material that might be ehhhh looking. At least this is what you have done for me and I can't thank you enough. When I start making better knives I KNOW where I will be coming back to for my wood!

Mr. Burl Source,
Thanks for your kindly offer. I just started making knives, and would love to try your products.
Plase send me a pakage. I will send you payment for postage today.

Alex

1st the ebony
Most of my woods are local stuff from the NW US. A good source for imported woods like the ebony would be Larry from Gallery Hardwoods (another forum member)

2nd the finish
Non stabilized redwood would benefit from a harder finish like CA glue. You might apply a drop to a scrap and see how the color looks.

Good luck and have fun.

Dear Burl Source
I would love to get hold of some burl scales, can you please let me know how much the postage will be to Namibia, Africa.
Thanks

$13 US will get a flat rate envelope with a couple sets of scales to Namibia or just about anywhere else in the world.

Burl source just wanted to let you know my wood arrived and im so excited. i got two different kinds of burl woods and a huge set of slabs that are large enough to do a two handed sword handle there so big. i have a blade ive been working on and its almost ready for scales so ill use this wood and then post a pic on here. thank you so much for your generosity! you now have another new customer! as my knife making skills progress ill be putting in some orders with you...

Those of you who have recently paid shipping and are waiting here is an update.
I will be cutting some cool stuff this weekend and will be able to mail to all who are waiting Monday and Tuesday. I will post a list here so you will know it is on it's way. After that I will be gone for a couple weeks so it will be slower for the next group of beginner wood.

All you other guys who have gotten wood, get to work and post some photos. If you post a photo in this contest thread it will enter you into a drawing for some Australian Ringed Gidgee Scales.

Today I mailed wood to;
Dennis Wilhelm
Christopher Granger
Jacen Dallas
Bronwyn Harcourt
Nathan Wloch
Craig Collier
Jason Sivertsen

Since I am old and lazy they are not labeled. Everything sent today was scales. I trued them for thickness and flatness but did not trim them. Some are oversized and may have some flaws you might need to work around or trim away. It's all good stuff.

These are photos of what was sent so you can identify your wood when it arrives.

It will be a couple weeks before I can send out more wood because I will be out of town for a knife show in Pasadena California. When I get back I will resume getting you guys hooked. I mean donating beginner wood. Have fun and post some photos.
