The walnut is going on my WIP knife today with a tung oil/super glue finish. I tested a small sliver of it and it turned out nice so heres hoping.
This is the project knife, polish isn't as good as I wanted but I just cant seem to get it past this point. Still for a first knife its not bad:o

Big Thanks to Burl Source!

Sent out some more beginner wood today. Packages were mailed to:
BJ Sharp
Peter Wong
David Lewis
Andrew Finnie
Fredrick Thomas
Jason Verveer
I hope you guys like it. Have fun.

Burl Source,

Thanks for sending the material. Can't wait for it to arrive. My blade should be ready by the time it gets here. I will post pics when completed.

Thanks,
BJ

Thanks for this. Just sent payment. Am working on stock removal blade from a sawmill band saw blade (saw blade was 6 - inches wide). Got the forge set up, and am beating on metal, but working on refining those skills before I forge my own blade. Have always loved hand forged blades, so want to make my own.

WOW, this is a amazing deal you doing burl source! im sending my payment in for some scales please. i am just getting started with knife making. i have just reshaped a knife that had the tip broken off and put new handles on it. now i am starting on my first knife from a blank. i also have a few blanks i purchased to work on after i finish the first one. please dont think im trying to get greedy or anything, but may we only do this once? or can we pay for shipping of 2 or 3 packages? thank you in advance for this deal, cant wait to try out the wood.

First off,:D BJ Sharp is the best name for a knife maker I've ever heard of. Sorry to get off topic.

Burl Source needs to teach a class on how to run a business! Thanks big time, you rock! I'm very grateful and humbled by your kindness.

Nice thing about bladeforums is how devoted to the craft and art of building knives many are here. I got some steel from Aldo, I'm using Fred Rowe's flat grinding jig and now I'll be buying wood for handle's from Burl Source.

I can't take credit for the "How to run a business part". Credit for that goes to the other forum members. I ask dumb questions and you guys give me smart answers. I just do what you guys tell me. Now, even my boss is starting to think I might be smart. .......maybe.........kind of.

Burl Source just sent payment. Thank you for doing this for the beginer I apreciate it. Do you have any in Walnut? If so that would be great. Thank you. John

My wood came in last week, I just got around now to taking pics of it. TYVM Burl. I'll post a finished picture of it here once the knife WIP is over.

A little late to the party I'm afraid. Offer still standing? Made my first knife with wood scales, I'd like to distance myself as far as I can from that nasty g10/micarta. Easier to use, looks nicer, and just has a feel to it that production knives don't.

Hey Mark
Wanted to show what I did the with Curly Walnut you sent me.
It's and O-1 Tool Steel blade
Over All Length is 8.5"
Actual blade length is 3.25". Though it looks like 4" is sharp I rounded the first 0.75" in case a finger or thumb slipped. Not that I expect it every to be used. My friend just wanted a dagger-like knife and this is what I came up with. And figured he might play with it some. So safety first right ..LOL

I also have a knife I was making myself with the Maple burl you sent me. But well I had a pin peening accident and with have to start that one over. Will post pics when I get it done

Thanks again for you generosity
Chris

its a simple equation. take the first hint of an upcoming sale- divide that by whatever time zone your in minus time for coffe A good bowel movement and general morning hygiene then add 3 hours to that for him to start posting. Then you will be ready to pick first dibbs. Go through the first 2 sets of blocks, pick out the ones your first instincts tell you to--then post. Go back up for the next 2 sets of pic posts ,pick the ones your intuition tells you to--repeat. then wait for the totals and tear your hair out, scrape and srounge to pay for them. Fletch you are good at that to. whats your strategy.lol--marekz

We apparently have the same taste. If I don't beat him to the punch every block I choose already has his name next to it.

Well I used some 6 minute epoxy Gel. I dont Like it It didn't take on one of the Knives it was way thick to work with and got foamy had lots of air bubbles. Kinda how Gorilla glue gets. It was from mixing though, i believe. The package said dries clear yeallow and I got a tanning opaque color.

so with all that said
I'm switching to a 60 minute Epoxy I got from Lowes or Home Depot. I has 2 bottles and cost about $15.00 but the bottles are 4oz each. The little syringe tubes are like .85 oz total

Shipped some more beginner wood today.

Packages went out to:
Larry Johnston
John Gregory
J Hotinger.

I hope you guys have fun.

Squiggly,
Your knife looks good. In the future with walnut or other open grained wood (visible pores) try wetsanding with tung or true oil. The slurry that is formed will fill the pores for a smoother surface. Don't hesitate to experiment. That's how you figure out what you like best. If anyone messes up their wood or needs a little more, that's ok. I go thru the paypal payments and ship the beginner wood about once a week.
