August 1st is Yorkshire Day! ;)

Thanks for an interesting thread (and generous GAW!), Jack, and Happy Yorkshire Day! Please count me as a non-entry, as I already own one each of the 2018 Guardians knives, and have previously been on the receiving end of your generosity (including one of your 25 giveaways).

Here are a few Yorkshire-related items I was able to put together: a handful of Sheffield-made knives, books by two of the Brontë sisters (who were born in Yorkshire), and a Kit Kat bar (now owned by Nestlé, and made by Hershey's here in the States, but originally created by Rowntree's of York).

I feel like I should apologize that the layout of the dartboard used for my photo backdrop is the standard/London layout, and not the traditional Yorkshire dartboard layout. :D

Thanks Barrett, great pic :) I don't see too many Yorkshire dartboards around these days :)

Happy Yorkshire Day t’ all!
Today is the first day of school for my 5 year old son, Eli. That’s proper champion, that lad. Got ‘im off t’studies, and went for a spot o’tea at Martin’s. Took a bit o’time as our brew was still mashin, but ‘twas quite lovely. Rain ‘as fallen all day, walked by the moor without a hat. I had planned t’cycle over the cobbles to the bakery, ‘twas t’wet. On me way drivin’, I cut off a bloke from Lancaster. Tha can allus tell a Yorkshireman, but tha can’t tell ‘im much! I went t’pay fer me chocolates and was like,”ow much?” when I got the total. As I got me puddings, a rouge ferret snatched t’bag ‘an run off. Headed back home t’watch “All Creatures Great and Small”, feelin’ fair t’middlin’. Carried my Sheffield Barlow, jus’ foun’out ‘twas made by A Wright as an SFO, so I’m chuffed t’bits wi’that. Ready for any ‘venture. Made it back w’jus’ o’er a shilling, ‘lectricity down so played a bit o’fifteen. I should prolly post some photos, or Jack may tell me “tha’ll get a clip rahnd lug’oil if tha’ carries on like this”.

Side note, the board in the background came off my paternal grandfathers barn a little over 30 years ago. You can still see the sawcut in it! I have no lambsfoot knife, love ebony, and completely missed this sfo or I would have one already. I am in!
Edit to add: Jacks prompting had me figure out how to be a gold member finally

Absolutely fantastic effort Jody! :D And congratulations on going Gold :) Hope Eli enjoyed his first day at skool

Some of my fondest memories are of my time in Harrogate with my new bride. We simply loved all things North Yorkshire.:thumbsup: My kids have asked again and again when we would take everyone over and show them the places we talk about... but alas, airfare for seven is a bit extreme lol. So here's thinking of Yorkshire! (and thanks for the chance to win a knife I have been wanting for some time). Cheers.

EDIT to add: My favorite while there was Theakston XB. And oh to have a proper Yorkshire Pudding...

Knife content is the one I carried while there (recent picture, same knife):

Harrogate is just up the road from me, so let me know if I can ever send you any reminders of your time there, or take some pics there :)

Got home from work, now I can enjoy more of these great posts! While I can't pull off the York'sha accent as I'd say back home in the mountains, Reckon I pert near understand bout niney percent uh whut them yunginzes was a say'n, that uz a right good story that boy uz a tellin bout his bird.Likens I'za right thar watch'n it out tha winder.;) edit: try'n to spell mountain talk the way it sounds, I wish people the world over would embrace their dialects, and be proud, the way from my limited exposure, it seems Yorkshire folk are. To often I see people from the mountains try to loose their dialects when away from home.

I heard far too many generic braying 'Posh English' accents on my trip to Sheffield yesterday :(

Isn't it your birthday also, Jack?
Happy Birthday, whether it is or it isn't!!:D

I'm afraid not Charlie, but Yorkshire Day was good enough! ;) Rachel did complain that I was treating it like my birthday a few times! :D

It has been a good Yorkshire Day at our house today .
We made some not too beautiful but very tasty Yorkshire Pudding .

It was great with some Beef Stew & Peas

Then it also goes great with some Cherry Pie filling .

All the time I was carrying these so it it was a Two Tews Wednesday .

Harry

Superb stuff Harry, well done my friend, and thank you :)

For is Yanks, what actually is Yorkshire pudding?

It's made from a batter, similar to a pancake batter, but lighter. There are a huge number of recipes. Personally, I think the important thing is a really hot oven, and traditionally it's made with beef fat in the roasting tin. I like to add just a splash of beer to the recipe, and not too much milk. Lots of recipes and baking instructions online

I started Yorkshire Day bright and early, with a breakfast of Leeds Bread Co-op sourdough toast and Yorkshire tea! ;) It's a bit too warm for tweed caps at the moment here, but I felt obligated to wear one of course :D

Yorkshire Day 2018.JPG

So did more than 400 other folks, who assembled in Leeds Kirkgate Market to beat the world record for the most flat-caps worn in one place at the same time! :D

I had already arranged to visit my home town of Sheffield though (where they haven't really organised a great deal since the invention of the Bessamer Converter). At Leeds train station, some smartly dressed folks with white rose button-holes were handing out free Yorkshire Pudding and bacon wraps to commuters. Since, shamefully, I was the only bloke in the station wearing a flat-cap I got snapped by the paparazzi accepting one of the gift breakfast snacks! ;) Still had room for coffee and doughnuts on the train though, which we shared with the hungry-looking train guard.

Arriving in Sheffield, it was a little too early for the pub, so we had a look in the Millenium Galleries, which had even less knives on display than usual. They did, however, have some knives on sale from Michael May and A.Wright & Son in the gift shop. I bought the first of many books there

Across the road is Sheffield Scene, which also had a good range of A.Wright & Son knives, something I've been encouraging for a couple of years, as well as some others bearing the IXL and Joseph Rodgers marks. I bought some Yorkshire items for the winner of this giveaway, and more local/cutlery history books! My bag was already heavy and bulging

A few doors along, opposite Sheffield Town Hall, another shop also had some pocket-knives on display. Nice to see, but a shame they can't spell, or just copy what it says on the boxes/knives!

After a coffee, and a visit to yet another bookshop, it was time to catch the tram down to the Kelham Island area of Sheffield, and The Fat Cat pub (https://www.thefatcat.co.uk/) :) On the tram, I saw my first other flat-caps of the day! o_O Not many of them in "Little Kelham", which is being gentrified appallingly o_O Not that it's made for new customers in The Fat Cat though, because the new residents have brought their own fancy bars and restaurants. We were the first customers in, but then it was just after noon ;) First pint was 'Zest For Life' from the local Don Valley Brewery.

I was hungry for pie though! :)

Pie came! :)

Not quite as good as usual, but still tasty. Nagging in my ear caused me to resist the apple crumble. I also forsook the new Brown Ale from Timothy Taylor's I rather fancied o_O Think I'll be going over on my own next Yorkshire Day!

There was a pub up-river I wanted to visit, The Gardener's Rest, home to The Sheffield Brewery Co, and the old 'Blanco' factory.

We walked across the famous Ball Street Bridge.

Sadly though, the Gardener's Rest was closed! :( And on Yorkshire Day too!

We returned to Kelham Island, passing yet another new brewery along the way.

I settled for a half of Abbeydale Brewery's Heathen in the Kelham Island Tavern (http://www.kelhamtavern.co.uk/)

We decided to head elsewhere in the city, but were soon waylaid by the discovery of a newly-opened bookshop (something you don't see often these days). They had a great local history section, and I ended up with another full carrier-bag of books and pamphlets. It turned out they had recently relocated from their former home in an old sweet shop in the area I grew up. I told the friendly proprietor, "That's where I used to buy my fags (cigarettes) when I was a kid!" He looked a bit horrified! :D

We next caught the tram to the charming Bath Hotel (http://www.beerinthebath.co.uk/), which hasn't changed much since I quit smoking at the age of 17 ;) I enjoyed a couple of ales from the Thornbridge Brewery :)

After that, it was off to the nearby Red Deer (http://www.red-deer-sheffield.co.uk/), another pub I've been drinking in since the 1970's. I had a pint of Abbeydale's Moonshine :)

Unfortunately, ordering food here proved to be a considerable mistake. It was absolutely diabolical, microwaved rubbish, which was undercooked, and caused us to have to end the Yorkshire Day celebrations prematurely :( Much as I love Sheffield, I think I'll go somewhere else next year

Thanks for helping me celebrate folks, it's been a lot of fun :) I'll sort out the draw later tonight, good luck everyone :)

Jack Black Jack Black sounds like quite a day!  Sorry to hear not everything was as anticipated, sometimes we fall victim to our own memmories. Not to mention how things change over time. But let's not get all depreseed now. :D Instead let us remember the things that remained - like the lambsfoot and Sheffield cutlery, to the joy of us all!

Thanks Isk! :D

Quite the day, Jack! Thanks for taking us along!

You'll have to post the pic if it gets printed!

A pleasure Gary :) I had a quick search last night, but couldn't find the pic, the editor was probably worried about scaring young readers! :D

Yes sir, most are to the north of us. Mike our friend int his one that we went to help: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/cowboying-up-north.1584993/ almost lost his place. It was right across the road from his house.

Been smoky around here though. The weather says its from the Ferguson fire in Yosemite.

Glad to hear you're all OK Dave :) I've been meaning to drop you a line, but figured I'd be adding to your workload :)

Why, I never! :p
Thanks for taking us along on your Yorkshire Day rambles.

name's ?!? o_O

.

LOL! :D The OTHER Rachel beat me to that one, but let me take a pic of the classic cover, which I imagine is supposed to represent Constance Markievicz (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constance_Markievicz) I got some good books too, have to take more pics! :)

Blast! How did I miss this one? I do a lot of this stuff on a regular basis. Never mind, hope you had fun with it and congrats to the winner.

You know what, with so many imaginative posts already, I'm unlikely to come up with something worthy. So not an entry but I shall be raising a glass this evening to Yorkshire, the winner and that Yorkshire terrier with the hair cut. Great GAW Jack and good luck all.

Thanks my friend, if you change your mind, you've still got an hour! ;) :D
